I've been trying to get a 1.3 running that has stood for some years. It cranks, splutters into life for a few secs then cuts out again. If you then re-crank it'll just crank till it blows back out the top of the carb.
The fuel pump is good, and i'm running off a dummy tank. It's timed up correctly, and yes i have the leads on the right way! I'm thinking the exhaust is blocked, as when it fired it pelted the garage door with rotten sh*t lol. Any other suggestions i've overlooked? :)

have you cleaned out the carb?
is the coil good
what are the earths like?

what is it fitted in?

if the 1.3 is really old, it could well have a ballasted coil setup, and needs a booster wire from the starter. but it is only an early astra mk1 / kadett that has that setup..

cam timing?

Nope not cleaned the carb. The 1.3 had 40's on it originally, but i'm trying to get it to run on a 2e.

Cam timing is bang on. Have a new coil, will go and try it.

are all the pipes in place on the manifold??

if you are worried about the exhaust, just remove it... its not like you live in a cul de sac with houses backing on to you lol

Oh how I feel your pain lol

lol I'm gonna rectify a few faults i've just seen and see how i go. The coil where it mounts to the body is cruddy, and the inlet gasket looks pap too.

The coil earthing through the inner wing was one of my problems, caused I weak spark I reckon, coil bracket and small section of inner wing bate metal sorted that

Ok, does this wire need to be connected for it to run?

mowgli

i don't think its vitally important... have you tried rigging a +ve to it?

Its the fuel solenoid isnt it? I always connect up to this so can't tell you if it works without

John

It's just connected to some sort of vac system. Should it have a 12v switched feed?

mk1nova_rich

Yes

Its almost definitely a wiring related problem - try this, then go through all your earths and check them again :thumb:

Just trying to see if it's under or overfueling Mowgli, that's all.

John

yep they're fuel fouled.

Should there be a plug on the 1.3 loom or not?

mowgli

there should be, i had a quick scan in haynes but failed to find it. i'd guess its an ignition live feed.

is the advance/retard diaphragm working?

i assume its a pierburg.

John

yep it's a pieburg 2e. The vac advance won't stop it from starting will it? Dropped the exhaust off tonight, and it'll run for a bit longer. Still running on 2/3 tho.
