I need to set a website up but I haven't got a clue where to start. I have tried asking a few people but they reckon they dont wonna do it (they must have too much money imo) If you want something doing, do it yourself!!! So where do I start lol ???
Also, how do you get yourself on the first page of google hits etc?? Any help, and, or advice will be very welcome!!
Cheers in advance

i would mind some tips on just doing it my self buddy, im sick of waiting for other people lol
where to host the site ???
use a free one or pay for one ect ect ???
You tried vista print they do a basic website, where you can build your own from it.
Buy some hosting (£3 a month for a few GB of space) and buy a domain (£3 for a year)
Depends on the content as to what you put on it.
i haver used go daddy in the past for a few websites, was a long time ago, but was a good helpful service non the less.
there are thousands of templates on the web for websites as well.

I want one for advertising my locksmithing carpentry business mainly the lock work as 99% of the jobs are call outs so advertsing is a must hense wanting to be on first page of google searches :)

This is one my friend uses
http://freeola.com/
would it be better and less hassle to go on one of those sites that tell you peoples trade in your area. so all brickies in kings lynn etc etc. or yellow pages.
think what people can do now, while on their phone out side their house lol.
or something like this.
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&safe=off&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=locksmith+in+ipswich&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=locksmith&hnear=Ipswich,+Suffolk&ei=m4KXTazLHYqAhAeSr6D2CA&sa=X&oi=local_group&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CBYQtgMwAA
if it works.

when buying the domain is it best to buy .co.uk or .com ???
.co.uk IMO
with a website, its all well and good getting it looking smart, but it costs Loads to get it onto the first page, click through adverts, pay per click. loads of ways but all not very easy. i would let someone else do the hard work...

Good website.
the links on the bottom left, are they click through links, or click as you earn, affilate. cant think what they are called lol - the adobe one?
and how close are you to the first page and for what key words?
as lionel says, buy hosting, buy a domain... those free builder things are free for a reason
then install wordpress (5min install), find a decent free theme (por pay for one) there are literally thousands about as its a very well established platform and very seo friendly. most pro web companies will build you a custom wordpress site if you buy an updateable website from them....
getting on google...my advice would be stick to very specific keywords - eg 'locksmith' youve got over 15mill competition but 'locksmith kings lynn' only 100,000 - so much easier to get much more relevant hits.
also get links to your site on all the trade directories and phonebooks etc - thats a good start

About a month ago i set up a free site on google www.rkb247.co.uk (http://www.rkb247.co.uk) but it was ****ing shocking so i will transfer the domain to freeola where i have bought unlimited space for £3 a month :)
Good website.

Erm the links i dont really know to be honest my mate did the website for me, i do know they dont cost me a thing.
I come up on the first page if you search for kitchen fitter in Renfrewshire, which is great as thats were the good money comes from.
Browney, If you find a website thats offering the same service as you high up in a google search, put the cursor over the page, right click, view source, that lets you see the script of the site and you can get an idea of how theve written there site to get up google listings.
Also do you have Business gateway down south, its free up here and they have a web design course you can go on.
