oh, yes, and they actually did quite well, on the rac, jimmy mcRae & russell brookes used to regularly get them into the top 6... and on oneof the stages in cumbria, jimmy was always the fastest... the manta only had 275hp & rwd, but by god could they handle it. search out anything to do with mantas on the circuit of ireland rally.

Get hold of 'Manta Magic', one of the greatest rally videos.

The in-car stuff with Vatanen and Harryman is mind blowing. The proper days of rallying, no question.

I love all the RWD videos from the late 70s/early 80s...especially the tarmac rallies like the Manx. Vatanen in a tarmac spec Rothmans Mk2 is pure porn!!

i have a memory of henri toivonen in ireland doing crazy stuff... and there was a basf sponsored manta doing a truly (better than x games) monumental jump on an irish single track country lane

driven by real men, the sort of people who thought a workout was walking to the pub..... yet another sadly missed era.

the quattros, especially the last of the group b short ones with the crazy 2 clutch gbox sounded like they really had unleashed the fires of hell.... its a pity that they actually weren't that good.....compared to the rs200, 205t16 & delta s4

Seen that 'Dear God' brown trouser moment at 2:50 before, absolutely brilliant skill. I can't get enough of the old rally clips

it was great to watch too, before risk assessments & that poxy wales rally gb was invented.. the rac was a national event, it lasted 4 long days & went all over the country, bringing the sport to the people, and then 2 rally reports per day on bbc1... oh, it was manna from heaven...i always remember dave metcalfe smacking a log pile in kielder in an astra 16v, live on the 10pm show & his co driver askin him 'what the f*cking hell was that in aid of?' & my mum spitting ovaltine all over the carpet

Luckily for you older ones you have witnessed these events first hand :( I have to settle for mediocre quality clips on youtube. My favourite event is the Jim Clark rally

I've always fancied Goodwood but never got round to going. Jim Clark is 2 months off so I'm looking forward to it, going Thursday to Sunday this year (setting up stage on the Friday)

weird trivia moment... audi actually looked at making a 1.5L 5 cylinder turbo engine for F1 back in the 80s..... now just imagine the noise off that

Very few fast audi's actually handle well, even to this day!

The sport quattro was sucessfull due to it's masive power advantage over it's rivals, once the 205 T16 E2 came out audi couldn't keep up, the problems were well documented
engine to far forward=understeer and heavy front end.

The oh dear god moment is well know but who has also seen Bertie Fishers OMFG moment, when his brakes fail at full speed heading into a sharp junction at over 100mph!! In a manta 400

another great driver and his son killed in a helicopter crash :(

Yes, the T16 was awesome, but audi dominated group b for 2 years, lead the way in 4WD, Turbo-charging their rally cars. Infact id even go as far as saying, had Audi not done that, group b as it was would have never existed. The S1 was better than the T16 too.

This was all before my time, so i may be wrong, but the facts are right!

Calm down lol, audi did indeed revolutionise the sport, I alway found it funny that the cooling radiators in audi coupe quattros was at the side of the engine as there wasn't enough space between the front of the engine and the grill lol

even today people who build the sport replicas go to long measures to move weight away from the engine bay, even running altenators of the propshaft,

just a shame audi never returned to the wrc, I have long been a huge fan of their cars, and finaly the RS3 has been made which I really would like in hatch form,

one thing is definitely true.. audi works drivers were by far the bravest. banging massive hp into a car that simply didn't handle as good as the competition meant people like mikkola, mouton & rohrl will live on in the memories of anyone who watched them in action.

audi's insistence in front engine 4wd was a huge cock up, and the never rallied group S audi cars were mid engined..but the 5 pot engine was just too long, even the later works group b cars experimented with composite components to lower the front weight bias.
