how can i do it
i am using the standard 1.5d gearbox which i believe is the f13 and it will only do 103mph topwack, i dont want to change the gearbox but i am up for changing the internals to increase my topend - is it possible

any other suggestions will be apprieciated

Will it only do 103 because it is at max revs in top gear, or because the engine isn't powerful enough to pull any further?

I'm guessing the latter, and if thats the case then you can only really go faster with more power.

MORE POWER WTF!???!

I have about 120bhp & 150ft/lbs torque - more power my arse!

its a 1.7turbo diesel with intercooler, 20psi boost, uprated fuelling, 1.5d flywheel(lighter) and the 1.5d gearbox which is only geared low (my friend has one in his nova van and he can only get 112 @ 7000rpm)

more power

any other suggestions

oh the engine only revvs to 5200rpm absolute MAX RPM

Ok, sorry, not personally up to date with everyones engine specs.

Fair enough, you'll need to change either the FD, cluster, or the whole box. I'm not too familiar with the TD box, but I'd guess your best bet would be to fit a CR box from the peterol range. Still close, but not as close at the diesel one. The f15cr box could be an option, or failing that find a longer final drive. The clusters are easy to change, and you could fit any combo of ratio's and FD's.

I'll check the electronic parts catalogue for you.

sorry about getting shirty

what do you mean FD and cluster
i have a cavalier td gearbox would that help (can i use the internals from that)

Why do you not want to change your current gearbox?

I'm not of the ratio's and FD's in the disel boxes. Would have to look them up. You'd know, if you could do 5200rpm in top gear in a cav diesel and see what the speed is. The other way is to take your FD and cluster out, do the same with the cav box, and start counting teeth. I'd guess it would be longer as it a cav is more of a rep motorway car.

FD = Final drive, crown wheel on the diff, pinion on the cluster.
The cluster= all your gears on a magazine that can be removed as one from the end of the gearbox.

have a look on the side of the box (the end caseing)

it should have a code stamped into it with W418 or C394 or summat similar in the code

as far as i know there were only 2 boxes - the diesels had the same close ratio box as the GTE's did (C374) by the looks of it:

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1553 RPM 40 MPH = 2071 RPM 50 MPH = 2588 RPM 60 MPH = 3106 RPM
70 MPH = 3624 RPM 80 MPH = 4141 RPM 90 MPH = 4659 RPM 100 MPH = 5177 RPM

Top Speed in 5th gear = 100.454 MPH

what u need is a Wide ratio box with 3.94 FD from an SRi - it will be stamped W394 on the end casing and u will get the following out of it:

Engine speeds in top gear:-
30 MPH = 1239 RPM 40 MPH = 1652 RPM 50 MPH = 2065 RPM 60 MPH = 2478 RPM
70 MPH = 2891 RPM 80 MPH = 3304 RPM 90 MPH = 3717 RPM 100 MPH = 4130 RPM

Top Speed in 1 gear = 25.184 MPH
And changes into 2 gear at 2871 RPM dropping 2329 RPM
Top Speed in 2 gear = 45.614 MPH
And changes into 3 gear at 3449 RPM dropping 1751 RPM
Top Speed in 3 gear = 68.772 MPH
And changes into 4 gear at 3560 RPM dropping 1640 RPM
Top Speed in 4 gear = 100.454 MPH
And changes into 5 gear at 4148 RPM dropping 1052 RPM
Top Speed in 5 gear = 125.921 MPH

if the engine can still manage that u could put the 3.74 FD cog from the CR box into it for even more speed

You could use the wide ratio box and fit the 3.74 fd.

The f13wr has a 4.18 fd, so use the wide ratio box and swap the close FD for a 3.94 or 3.7.

the only numbers that i can find on my gearbox are the following and the location of them will be next to the number: -
all of the locations are as if you are looking at the gearbox end on as it would be in the car

90 344 582 = Selector Housing
5062 = Selector Housing
6113 = Selector housing

90 44 66 07 = gearbox housing
0000 - 08 = gearbox housing
90 470 635 = gearbox housing
8415 - 15 = gearbox housing

AH 465438 - E = end plate
90 289 242 = end plate
5062 = end plate

these are all of the numbers that are on the gearbox
hope you can help.
p.s. this on on the cav gearbox
i will post the nova ones up shortly

according to the EPC thats an F16-F20 end plate :/

the code u need is stamped onto a flat directly under the end plate - its a bit of a bugger to see - especially if its dirty since the writing gets covered over very easily

also note - the writing is stamped INTO the box like the engine number - its not cast in like the product code on the box casing

oh its the cav box

the cav 1.7TD box is an F16

the 1.7D and novas use the F13
