I've got the 20XE engine and I need another loom because I have an intermittent fault with it,

I was wondering if I specifically need to fit another 20XE loom or can I just fit an early dizzy type loom?

I take it you have the expensive non lambda 20xe loom, in which case you will need another. However, you could change to a dizzy c20xe loom if you run a lambda sensor and chage the ecu to suit.

Yes mate it is pre lambda. What are the reasons why I can't swap the C20XE dizzy loom for the 20XE pre lambda dizzy loom?

Tony im sure that you can run the later dissy loom on yours mate as the ecu wont have a lambda pin so it will run without it even though you have the plug if you know what i mean.

Can anyone else cast some light on this at all?

Can you not just remove the loom and disconnet everything then do a continuity test on each wire. This would show a break in a wire.

It's an 'intermittent' fault mate?

Try moving the loom as you test it

Much prefer to just swap the loom over for a known working one. Could be there all day trying to find a fault.
