View Full Version : 1300 first time start up-oil pressure

Finally got round round to trying to start the Sport up for the first time today

I've turned it over for a few minutes to try and get the oil pressure up with the lead from the coil off and the ecu not plugged in

But the oil pressure gauge is not going up ?

How long do you need to turn it over for till the pressure comes up ?

Top of the engine has no oil up there either

Have I not turned it over for long enough ?

Don't want to keep turning it over if there's no oil getting round the engine

Help please lol

Can't remember exactly when I was prepping the SR to run, but it didn't take minutes Edd:eek:

Did the light go out? could be a dodgy sender ot gauge

When the SR started the oil pressure was that high it went off the end of the scale:eek:

There IS oil in it:wtf: ......I presume;)

Edd did you buy one of the £13 senders off eBay? I got one of those and the connections are the wrong way around, mine did exactly the same until I swapped them around ;)

Take the plugs out, and also take the rocker cover off, you will see the oil coming out of the lifters etc. once the oil is up there.

dont worry about it the cranking speed is not neccisarily fast enough to build up pressure to turn light off take plugs out and this will help engine turn over faster if it still doesnt go out connect everything up and fire the biatch

one of my co workers fitted a brand new z18xer into a vecy didnt get oil pressure with dis unpluged was to scared to plug it in so ordered a new motor (parts warranty ) fitted the new one and it did the same after finally convincing him to plug the dis pack in it fired and turned oil light off haha

There's oil in it lol

Sender is new GM so no probs there

I don't really want to take the rocker cover off tho as it's nicely sealed

I'll try taking the plugs out

I've turned it over twice for about 3 mins each time and have yet to see any oil up the top of the engine ?????

There's oil in it lol

I assumed there waslol

Now get back in that garage and don't come out until its running:wtf: .....properly:p

American hotrod start them up to check they have oil pressure lol

Head gasket on upside down?

Thats not possible

Are you getting a feed to the dash then, is the oil gauge working okay? Do you have another set of clocks and another sender you could try?

Balley
25-03-11, 08:03 PM
Just asking as I know on puntos and other cars it is and it blocks the main oil gallery to the head.

Dash lights are on fuel gauge is working so ......

I will try another set of clocks or two

I don't have another sender tho but this one is brand new but you never know

Fooking thing :mad:lol

Edd

Tbh I wouldn't mind the gauge not moving until it was running but the engine is dry at the top :(

Southie
25-03-11, 08:14 PM
Is the oil pump brand new, silly question probably lol Maybe a faulty one though.

Have you had a multimeter on the wires to the sender to double check it's okay?

Edd
25-03-11, 08:42 PM
Yeah new pump

Think I'll have to wait till daylight now :(

:( bloody rot boxes lol

Still puzzled why no oil is up then top of the engine tho ????
any other 1300 engine I had has built pressure quite quickly ???

just wait till you start it to realise that because it may not build up fully on tick over

You will never build up enough pressure for the light to go up when cranking with the plugs in. Remove the plugs so it turns over much faster.

Oil pump is brand new and genuine. My dad built the engine so I know everything will be right. Valve train was all fitted with assembly lube so should be OK until oil pressure is correct.
Cranking speed wont get the pressure up, you will need to cross your fingers and fire her up.

Well if that's the case then, Edd fire the old girl up.

Have you got a single feed oil sender and a light only dash you could try maybe.

Cheers for the all the replies everybody

I'll just fire it up then lol

I shall crack on again with it tomorrow and report back

Edd

Looks great

Works ? No

The injection system has no power, well fuel pump ain't priming but if you put a live to it it's fine

Soooo, tomorrow I have all sorts to look at :(

is the irmscher setup a monotronic or jetronic system?

Edd
25-03-11, 11:42 PM
It's what ever a 18E astra gte 1.8v is if that helps

It has a Bosch ecu lol

How do you tell ?

Novasport
25-03-11, 11:43 PM
Jetronic iirc

Lee H
25-03-11, 11:46 PM

It should do. My LET did when I took the plugs out. Spinning it on the starter with plugs in is too slow and just killed the battery, obv turns over much quicker with no compression.

Edd

This is the bit I hate

It's all back together and it don't work  lol

sorry, on my GSI when you turn ignition to stage 2 the fuel pump primes, on my friends LET astra the fuel pump only runs at stage 3 and when the engine is running with no prime at stage 2 on ignition.

Did you check the fuel pump terminals to see if its getting any power? If its zero or very low then its the fuel pump relay.

Lee H

Sorry, though we were still on priming oil pumps. The XE/LET fuel pump relay setup is different so you don't get the priming like the Gsi lump.

Edd

Put a different set of clocks in and I have oil pressure :)

Still no power to the loom tho :(

Edd
26-03-11, 04:04 PM
It has spark and fuel but won't fire up ??????

Plug
26-03-11, 04:26 PM
is it all wired up correctly?

Any fuses missing or blown?

Edd
26-03-11, 04:30 PM
Yep wired it correctly

Fuses ok too

Plug
26-03-11, 04:33 PM
you tryed to start it with the fuel pump wired up to the battery to see if it fires up?

Edd
26-03-11, 06:04 PM
Fuel pump is working as it should per revolution

Mmm I think that the timing might be out by one turn of the crank

Beginners 1300 oil pump priming.

Remove hex plug in top/front of pump. Pour oil down hole. Re-fit plug
No plugs fitted , wind engine over (with jump start pack if needed for extra battery capacity)

Voila! Oil pressure.

If light stays on, or gauge doesn't lift - check engine earth.

Also check with the cam cover off to see if oil is being pumped "north".

You'll know when it's pumping, the note changes - it becomes "softer" to the ear.

If still nothing - sump off - check oil pickup pipe for blockages (gauze strainer) or cracks - if it's got a hole in the pipe - it won't prime.
