================================================

So after 18 months, I've finally returned to Novas, having just bought a pretty tidy 1989 1.4 SR

It's currently lowered 60mm on springs and shocks, has a MK2 dash fitted so I don't get cancer, and a few other bits that you can see.
I'll let the pictures do the talking...

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/20032011246.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/20032011248.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/20032011249.jpg

so the plans for now are to replace the rear arches, replace the doors, tidy up the interior, re-tango the indicators and tail lights, and also remove the drug dealer window tints. Alloys need some center caps and a refurb too

other than the essential work, I'm going to stick a set of bike carbs on it, and a few other related engine bits.

bought the carbs within 3 hours of getting the car lol

Keihin CVK40's off a ZX-9
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/20032011253.jpg

stripped them down and cleaned all the swarf and dried petrol out of them. forgot to take pictures so now we are half assembled again
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/23032011256.jpg

float bowl gaskets are £10 each  so thought sod that, and put them back as they were lol
and all done, just need another ram pipe as one is missing. I bet Kawasaki will have my trousers down for that

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/23032011263.jpg

also got an inlet gasket so I can get a flange laser cut for the manifold
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/23032011264.jpg

and found some rear arches kicking around at work so I've re-homed them too
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/23032011265.jpg

Thats all for now, I'll update as I work :thumb:

Lewis.
23-03-11, 09:33 PM
cheers Connor :thumb: they were bought by an apprentice about 6 years ago and just been sat gathering dust since. I had a complete front cross member from the same stash last year too lol

Looks like a nice start. Dont go mad, just get back in to driving and get some ncb built up.

Never seen a 1.4 SR on a G.. They it was only Late H's that had them.

Lewis.
23-03-11, 09:53 PM
cheers guys :)
and spud, yeah I was well pleased when Balley reminded me they were there :D And it will certainly be getting some vinyl and rub strips once the doors and arches are sorted. just need the club shop to come back online lol
cheers Benn, I've still been driving since my last Nova, I was just silly and has Corsas and Land Rovers lol

Lewis.
24-03-11, 10:50 PM
I could tell, as the passenger seat was slightly damp when you got out lol

by the way, what had it's blue lights lit up when you pulled out of metheringham? looked like you got pulled or something

bit of an update, took my rear windows out to get the headlining down to fix the most annoying squeek in the world.
also took the horrible window tints off, the glue took ages

windows and surrounds out, and Balley busy with the thinners
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/26032011266.jpg

here was the source of the squeek. the little tit sticking out is a support for the sunroof bracket, and its weld had fractured allowing it to move. so with much care and precision it was bent away with a bar and now its quiet :d
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/26032011267.jpg

windows back in, and looking much better without tints
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/26032011269.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/26032011268.jpg

Also got some new jets to drill, as the current ones were already drilled to 2mm, and ordered a new ram pipe from Kawasaki, which wasn't as expensive as I thought

Connor
26-03-11, 06:12 PM
Looking good lew, looks alot better without the tints :)

Lewis.
26-03-11, 06:24 PM
ta mate :D just need to get rid of the clear rear lights and indicators now and it will be completely de-chavved lol

Looking good mate, agreed about the tints lol some standard rear lights will finish it off nicely

Lewis.
27-03-11, 07:36 PM
thanks for the comments guys,
rich, I've got some standard rear lights and indicators on their way to me now :) should make it look much better

27-03-11, 08:06 PM
Euro reverse lights would look good with foglight bulbs modified into the reverse bit.

Lewis.
27-03-11, 09:16 PM
aye i'd not mind doing something like that mate, but unfortunately the subtle touches have to wait untill the more pressing issues are sorted, namely the rotten arches and doors lol (removing tints and chav lights are more important than arches btw lol)

Balley
28-03-11, 08:19 AM
cheaper any way. put a wanted thread up for a door or two :)

Lewis.
28-03-11, 11:22 PM
Need to wait untill I have some money first Dan, got to tax it this month too  its not the weather for spraying either, so the doors can stay for now. arches, then doors, then wings, then paint lol

Lewis.
29-03-11, 07:23 PM
Had a bit of a mince about last night, trying to fit some speakers. unfortunately the PO had butchered all of the stereo wiring, so i just had some 6x9's hacked into the parcel shelf, a tangle of wires loosely resembling amp wiring, and nothing up front

so the plan was to use some bits i had laying around, such as a 4 channel amp, 2 6x9's and 2 6" speakers. amps going under the passenger seat, 6"s behind the front door cards and 6x9's in the rear quarters.
unfortunately, the 6"s wouldn't fit in the door skin, or behind the card,s and the amp wouldn't go under the seat either lol :wall:

so out of desparation for a radio, stuck some grotty 4" things in the doors just for now.

too big :(
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/28032011271.jpg
note the very 80's aftermarket electric windows lol

4 whole amps of distortion and vibration  oh yes
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/28032011272.jpg

also, my tyres turned up at work today, so they can go on after i refurb the wheels
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/29032011274.jpg

and some center caps came in the post, big thanks to Nov4 Sport :thumb:

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/29032011276.jpg

what colour do we reckon for the wheels? I'm feeling maybe anthracite or dark silver-gray?

Balley
29-03-11, 07:26 PM
Silver ftw, ask southie for a photo shop

Lewis.
29-03-11, 07:28 PM
as light as this though? I thought they might look better darker?
good idea, i'll get a good picture first

Nice colour choice on the wheels and I only sold my nova with clear rears as I knew I would have had problems selling them separate.

Lewis.
02-04-11, 02:37 PM
cheers mate, I'm quite please with the colour myself, should look nice with the black.
and yeah I bet i struggle to sell these clears  if they dont sell then i will take great pleasure in destroying them lol

They look better or white cars, or colours, but they just stand out so much against the black. not to mention the fact they are illegal

Loving what you done to this so far

Lewis.
03-04-11, 03:22 PM
cheers connor :d glad you like it, though its going to need a lot of work before i'm happy with it, as at the moment i'm just annoyed every time i see it lol and the interior really is awful, the MK2 dash looks like it was put in by stevie wonder and there are wires everywhere. it needs taking out and a new dash putting in with a bit more care i think

the wheels are a bit rough in places, but will do for now. i'd like some comps or cessaros for it at a later date.

Connor
03-04-11, 03:42 PM
When Curt had it, we was going to trial fit my comps to see what it would look like, i reckon it would look soo good.
And i am starting to really like the original 3 spoke, might have to invest in a set soon

Looks ace mate, like the old late mk1 sr's.
I'm gutted i sold my gsi wheels now, two reasons, could have them on the mk1, and i would be able to good money for them now, as ALL 5 were totally mint! sold them all a few years back with good tyres for £40 dear god..

Comps seem to suit everything, I think its just the simplicity of them. The only trouble is they don't seem to like me lol
these will be for sale in a while when I've got some replacements

thanks mate :) these wheels do seem to suit the car pretty well, but they aint my favourites. i'm not overly keen on the size, as its very hard to get decent tyres to fit

Lewis.
04-04-11, 09:36 PM
fitted some late style stalks on sunday, look far better than the standard crap
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/03042011309.jpg

also had a root around behind the dash to see the extent of the butchery

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/03042011312.jpg

:( merris has been at it with his axe. does anyone know if that metal bit is part of the dash or separate? (thats looking behind the ash tray by the way)

also, wtf are these?
this is under the glove box
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/03042011314.jpg

and this is under the column
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/03042011310.jpg

I also fitted the new tyres to the rims at lunch
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/04042011318.jpg

the tyres seem a bit too wide for the rims though :( they look like bloody balloons
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/04042011315.jpg

and they dont balance up very well lol

The box under the glove box is the central locking control unit, under the steering wheel is something to do with the headlights and the merris bit is the dash bottom mount

Nice project mate

As above the box for the lights was fir dim dip headlights, the idea is the dip headlght would come on at 25% power with the sidelights, not many actually work lol,

I wasn't going for the stretched look, I just wanted a square side wall. they are 185's on a 5J rim so unless i want push bike tyres on it i'm stuck like this.
hopefully they wont roll too much

Yes those wheels are looking good.

Cheers Connor, washing it is on my to do list, but the last time i washed a car properly was in september, as since then the land rover just got a quick jetwash underneath, so i need to re-learn how to wax again lol

ah cheers, i'll see if i can screw the bracket to something, instead of just having it dangle.

Thanks Bazil :) i dont know if it works, i'll check later. not that it matters, as dim dip was only a stupid 80's fad anyway. do you know if the lights will still work with it disconnected?

I've now collected a few more bits for the bike carbs
a ram pipe to replace the missing one
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/05042011330.jpg

a fuel pressure regulator
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/07042011337.jpg

and some olives, which will be silver soldered to the ends of the inlet manifold runners to give the carbs rubbers something to clamp against
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/07042011338.jpg

Its back on the road after a week, folowing a fiasco with taxing it, feels great to be back in it, even after such a short time lol
so to celebrate the occasion, I treated it to a wash and a wax, and a picture whore

thats all for now, I'm hopefully getting the manifold flange back soon, so I can crack on with that!

12-04-11, 06:56 PM
update time!

got the flange on saturday

also got a fuel pressure regulator
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/12042011347.jpg

a very expensive fuel filter
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/12042011345.jpg

a oil breather catch tank (think it needs draining already though )
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/09042011343.jpg

some fuel, breather and vacuum pipes, along with various fittings
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/12042011350.jpg

so there it is, a DIY bike carbs kit...
some assembly required
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/12042011351.jpg

welder has gone in to be repaired, so should be able to get cracking on the manifold at the weekend :) we may even get to hear it speak :d

Tidy looking motor Lewis the rings are they from an Audi lol

Mk2 dash in a mk1

Love the sr alloys though still fancy a set for mine instead of my 4 spokes, bikes ftw, you'll love them I certainly miss mine.

Lewis.
12-04-11, 10:28 PM
cheers southie :)
i didn't realise i'd laid them out like that untill i uploaded them lol
it was in when i bought it, but I dont know whether to put the MK1 dash back. its just the guarantee of cancer if I do that puts me off lol
the wheels are growing on me tbh, even when i painted them i didn t like them, but now they are slowly making me like them.

and i cannot wait to hear them bark! will make all this effort worthwhile :D

Lewis.

Lewis.
16-04-11, 07:02 PM
ok a rather disapointing update, but an update none the less

I can report that despite my intentions for it to be running tonight, I have done absolutely sweet fook all on with the bike carbs, opting instead to spend the day with the missus  :wall:

I have, however fitted my new number plates :d seemed a shame to replace them as it was still wearing its original plates, but they were cracked, so meh

proper update!

I started fitting the bike carbs on sunday, It went a lot smoother than I thought it would

so fitted my remote fuel filter on the bulkhead
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/17042011372.jpg

and the pressure regulator
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/17042011373.jpg

spigot for water pipe, and alternator bracket
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/17042011375.jpg

servo take off
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/17042011376.jpg

we then got a little over excited and tried running it, it ran like a bag of crap, on about 2 cylinders, and wouldnlt rev or idle. we put this down to the fact that the manifold only had 2 bolts on finger tight and no gasket lol  so painted it up, and left it for the night.

then tonight, I came home and made the rest of the alternator bracket, fitted the manifold with a gasket and put the water pipes on
then fitted the carbs properly, and made up the new servo vacuum pipe
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/18042011378.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/18042011379.jpg

spun it over, and it started first turn, and idled fairly happily on full choke :d
so had a bit of a play, adjusting fuel pressure a bit, but it has no throttle cable, choke cable or coolant, so not for long
they sound fooking awesome though! :d

so the list to complete is as follows:

make throttle cable fit
route choke cable through bulkhead
fill with coolant and bleed
get it running and set fuel pressureSo we're really close now! i'll try and get a video up tomorrow :thumb:

Lewis.
18-04-11, 11:10 PM

Lewis.
18-04-11, 11:32 PM
cheers matey :thumb: its pretty easy on a carb motor, as you don't have to touch the ignition side of things which is a bonus :) my manifold is just thrown together, it works, but looks a bit 'motorsport' lol
for the few seconds of sound i've heard already, I would say do it! its worth it for that alone lol

they certainly do connor :d

but unforunately that sound is just out of my grasp at the moment :(
I finished everything last night, the last jobs being the throttle and choke cables, but now it won't start. it just turns over and over without even trying to fire :wtf: theres fuel to the cylinders, and theres a spark. i've not touched the timing in any way, and i had it runing yesterday, exactly as it is now, just sans cables. any ideas folks?

wooo! 1000th post lol

Lewis.
24-04-11, 11:14 PM
right, I spent the weekend on this again, it now runs, but only on 1 cylinder :( after much work, and many phone calls to Tom Reid (thanks btw :thumb:) we decided it must be vacuum related, so I pinched another set of carbs off my mates step dad, and tried them, it struck up and ran perfectly on them :wall:
even got to skeg and back on them with no problems, other than the fact it used half a tank for 85 miles  they are jetted for a tuned pinto, so are overfuelling like mad, hopefully it will go better once i have mine on and set up properly. they are currently soaking in petrol, to try and remove the 3 year old petrol varnish that seems to be blocking the vacuum passages.

anyway, pictures of borrowed carbs

Something different with a smallblock :) I like alot

Any idea what bhp your looking for when it's running right ?

And never seen 185 width tyres on 3 spokes before, no wonder they look big lol

Get a mk1 dash back in there, much better than a mk2, proper nova dash, don't rattle if fitted right :thumb:

thanks Edd :thumb: I'm a fan of the small block, its about time people bought an XE nova with the intention of doing a small block conversion lol

i'm not sure at the moment, with just the carbs, and 4 branch i'd imagine somewhere approaching 80bhp, but if i ever get round to a decent cam, and an SE head, then it might push 100.
though if the fuel economy is as crap as it appears to be, then it will be getting a C16XE anyway lol

yeah the tyres look huuuuge! but just about got used to them now, so they can stay too.

i'm really in 2 minds about the dash. i've got one sat in the shed, but i cannot make my mind up. I was hoping to go for a black interior, as i HATE grey interiors, would it be a sin to have a black MK1 dash?

Nice one mate, it sounds pretty cool.

As much as I like the idea of carbs so far they seem a disapoint ment, I think C16 for the win, its just the expense of fuel tank and pump etc which is annoying!

Lewis.
25-04-11, 12:26 PM
cheers guys, they do sound pretty good (well, not now as they are back with their rightful owner lol)

I think your right Dan, even though i've not finished these carbs yet, i'm already thinking about a C16XE, i couldn't believe how thirsty they were on saturday!

i think it should go like **** off a shovel with them set up right, that ****ty pooburg that was on it i tuned it up on the co2 machine every 2 to 3 weeks, because it started over fueling and popping loads, stick with the carbs, also when it was over fueling it was **** slow so you will notcie and massive difference if there fueling correctly ! i have the mk1 dash here if you want it? i regretted mk2 dashing it as soon as i got it, and that buchery is where someone tried to put one of those massive head units in :s
good work :)

Lewis.
25-04-11, 02:05 PM
thanks Curt, I hope its goes better with them set up right too, it cant be doing it any good chucking that much fuel at it. not to mention the inevitable bore wash.

you already gave me the MK1 dash mate (unless you have more), its in my shed now, begging me to fit it lol
ah I though the mess must have been due to something along those lines lol

oh, when you fitted the MK2 dash, did you use a MK2 loom or just make the MK1 loom fit? if so, was there much chopping involved? weighing up wether to get an uncut MK1 loom to go with the dash...

Lewis.

thats the other option Dan :thumb: I'm swaying towards the MK2 at the moment

Really cool project, What is the size of the jets needed for a 1.3?

thanks mate, I've got 1.6mm jets for my 1400, but I can't tell you if thats any good seeing as mine wont run properly lol

Well I just blew out the carbs, checked the diaphragms again, rebuilt them all and started it up...
it now runs worse than before, and none of the slides will lift. I'm now seriously pissed off with the ****ing thing, and its so very close to having the pierberg refitted.

zeifer33
25-04-11, 07:53 PM
ok, listen what is the original size of the jets?

tom reid
25-04-11, 08:35 PM
Keep the faith Lewis, don't go junking the bike carb way until you have a decent set of carbs on there correctly jetted. Drveability, power and fuel economy will improve.
On my 1400 8v I was averaging 27 mpg, with a cam , ported head and a 4.1 diff, so you should easy see 35 mpg, assuming you drive with a light right foot.
Bite the bullet and buy R1's.

Lewis.
25-04-11, 09:46 PM
I'm going to try sealing the carb tops tomorrow, Tom, as its the last thing it can possibly be, if that doesn't work, then the pierberg is going back on for a bit. I may then either try a set R1's when funds permit, or just save for the X16XE. fingers crossed that hylomar will save the day
I do indeed potter around like a granny most of the time, so should get some decent ecconomy once running right.

zeifer33
25-04-11, 10:34 PM
It is clear that power and fuel economy are not very compatible.

Lewis.
25-04-11, 11:08 PM
I think there is a balance between the two, and even the most tuned of engines, can return good mpg if driven very lightly. as Tom says, I should see low 30's

Balley
26-04-11, 07:46 AM
If it don't work pal just get a 16xe.. Its not work spending another 100 quid plus a new manifold for R1 carbs when you want to XE it any way!

suppose thats the sensible thing to do, and the best use of money.

update:

I've now sealed the carb tops with some hylomar, and sliders 1, 2 & 3 all lift properly :d removed No.4 and resealed it with no change, so got the brake cleaner out and went hunting for air leaks, and think i'be located a small one on the servo vac take off, so re-sealed that, and hopefully when its dry tomorrow it will run on 4 :)

Now i´m doing a 1.3 SR engine with bike carbs. but i have a question right now, In the Japanese modifications there use the carburetors Keihin in horizontal position, nevertheless when you use the carburetors of R1, CBR, Zx9r take an angle of inclination. Why?:wtf:

its just to keep the float bowls level. on these carbs, with the float bowl level, the throat has a downwards slope of 32 degrees, my manifold is somewhere between 35 and 40 degrees, as this is more like their original position on a bike, as when accellerating the G forces push the fuel to the back of the float bowl, so it can cope with being angled slightly more.

Lewis.
27-04-11, 10:25 PM
IT WORKS! sort of

I've just spent another night on it, and it is much improved. It's now running on four cylinders, and idles smoothly.
Slight problem though, in that it won't idle any slower than 2k, and it won't rev on the road under load. You can pull off real gently and bimble along, but any more than about 20% throttle and it starts missfiring.

anyone have any ideas?

Thats good news mate, have you tried messing about with the distributer (sp), andvancing and retarding the timmimg slightly ?

iain

i've borrowed a timing light, and i'm going to set that when its going properly, I've been told the standard SR dizzy runs 5 degrees advance, and I should be going for about 12 degrees. Its been suggested that my probloems may be down to the fuel pressure being to high, so i'm picking up an original ZX9R fuel pump on saturday, so that should hopefully sort it out :)

How have you made the linkage of the throttle cable?mate:wtf:

I modified the original cable just as a temporary thing, but i'm intending to replace it with a proper cable when i get time. i'll take some close up pictures of it for you tonight mate :thumb:

Zeifer33

heres my cable, its the standard SR cable, with all the grooved bit for the adjuster cut off, so show more inner cable, then a short piece of 3/16" copper brake pipe bent at 90 degrees and held to the outer cable with tape, with a wire rope clamp so hold it against the bracket on the carbs. I cut off the original nipple to fit the pipe, and fitted a 5mm solderless nipple instead. Hope this helps mate, if you want any more pictures etc, then just ask :thumb:

personally i think its got to be the fueling and sounds like it did when it was overfueling before, try cleaning out the pins in the dizzy also it might be worth getting a new cap for it, have a look at the center pin where it pushed onto the rotor arm if i remember that was abit fubard ?

i think you should stick with the carbs because it will be soo cool when its running properly :)

Fantastic Lewis:thumb:

Listen, why have you changed your fuel pump? is due to the pressure sent to the carbs?

Lewis.
30-04-11, 01:58 PM
It runs :d tried bigger main jets and it went better, but still not right, so then stuck the orininal 2mm jets in it and it now runs well enough to drive. it's no doubt bore washing it, but its a start. going to try and limp it to Tom Reid on monday and let him work his magic :thumb:

ah right, thanks, i'll get a new cap and arm sorted just in case

Fantastic Lewis:thumb:

Listen, why have you changed your fuel pump? is due to the pressure sent to the carbs?

The carbs don't seem to like running with the mechanical pump, as no matter what pressure I set the regulator at, it either floods at idle, or runs lean at full throttle. the bike pump solves this as it has a high flow rate with a low pressure, and can cut out when the float bowls are full.

zeifer33
30-04-11, 03:19 PM
Very interesting.Yesterday I saw a video that ran on the original mechanical fuel pump. I will try to make them work with the electric fuel pump of the GSi plus a pressure regulator, because according to the mechanism, excessive fuel pressure causes the needles do not come to close up.

What was the diameter of the jets before you had mounted?:p

Lewis.
01-05-11, 09:31 AM
the first set of jets turned out to only be 1.35mm, then i tried 1.6mm with a little improvement, now its running 2mm jets, and it almost runs well lol i'm going to block up the air jets again today, as they are pretty much redundant now in this set up, so can only be causing bother

Lewis.
01-05-11, 06:53 PM
right, blocked the air jets this morning, using trusty blue-tack lol which instantly stopped the misfire at 4k, which meant I could go back down to 1.6mm jets. its now actually drivable! though still gutless and flat as fook

blue-tack wizardry

ive got a 1400 8v on bike carbs in my nova now. im the lad who bought a kent ast1 cam of you years ago lol.
my engines a c14se set up with 1200 dizzy, kent ast1, zx6r carbs, 4branch.
i got it set up at bogg brothers and he used 1.9mm jets in mine.
it made 140 bhp on his rollers but i wasnt sure that was possible lol.
but he had them calibrated few days after and they were 5bhp out!
so it should be 135 at the wheels!! haha

The original plan was to keep it standard, then replace it with a standard X16XE, but now I reckon I'll fit an SE head, possibly with some work done to it, a cam and vernier, and see how it goes from there :)

Balley

16v it !!!

Lewis.
02-05-11, 08:45 PM
get to fook lol

Balley
02-05-11, 08:51 PM
you have just proved that yours is no faster with carbs than it were with the twin choke, if anything the twin choke had a better power kick.. and they dont sound as good as a 16v with an induction kit either.. tbh I was disapointed with the trip we had in it

Lewis.
02-05-11, 09:02 PM
It goes better than with the pierberg though, and it still sounds lush. I dont think its worth the expense and hassle fitting a 16v either, especially considering what can be achieved with this engine. not to mention the extra insurance/tax

Connor
02-05-11, 09:07 PM
Glad to hear its running good, but i still dont seem to see a video of it going yet ;) :p

02-05-11, 09:27 PM
ive got a 1400 8v on bike carbs in my nova now. im the lad who bought a kent ast1 cam of you years ago lol.
my engines a c14se set up with 1200 dizzy, kent ast1, zx6r carbs, 4branch.
i got it set up at bogg brothers and he used 1.9mm jets in mine.
it made 140 bhp on his rollers but i wasnt sure that was possible lol.
but he had them calibrated few days after and they were 5bhp out!
so it should be 135 at the wheels!! haha

you keeping your engine standard minus the carbs ?

Do you mean the fly?? as thats a mental claim from the wheels...?

Lewis.
02-05-11, 09:30 PM
/\ i've always heard of things making ridiculous power on their rollers tbh

mark69
03-05-11, 11:28 PM
Do you mean the fly?? as thats a mental claim from the wheels...?

i didnt belive him but he insisted it was, and a mate got his mini set up. while he was there dave at bogg bros had his rollers calibrated. they were 5bhp out.
im not fussed what bhp its running tbh, some people on here say its impossible and im talking siht but end of the day, ive put the video on youtube and its clear as day.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XXKXGX1Lu0

its a silver/light blue 5 door mate, but yeah think you had a white mk3 astra then.
i had a 1400 single point engine in mine running a twin choke webber then swapped to multipoint sri engine on carbs, the diffrence was suprising!

Lewis.

update time!

had a mega road trip last night, left home at 6pm, and got home at 3am
350 miles to Matt Brown's and back for a van load of bits

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/05052011410.jpg

ended up with 2 doors, a front wing, a tailgate, a windscreen, a pair or bucket seats, some window surrounds and an ash tray. lol

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/06052011418.jpg

so got up this morning after 4 hours sleep, and set to cutting my manky arches out

the offensively rusty arches

Lewis.
06-05-11, 03:25 PM
Thanks Iain, I don't think I could bring myself to scrap it to be honest. the cutting back is the easy bit, welding the plates is going proper slow now :(
got one patch done, and now attempting to clean up for the second, but the damn spare wheel well is in the way lol

You know when I offered you arches for the inners?

You REALLY should have taken them lol

Lewis.
06-05-11, 04:45 PM
they were inners!?! oh ****, I thought you offered me outers :wall: **** **** **** **** ****. hmmm to far to come back now lol

progress is now temporarily halted, as my angle grinder has just melted :(

Rich

Think he meant outers to use as inners, cant get inner arch panels i dont think.

Thats alot of work you have taken on lol

Lewis.
06-05-11, 05:29 PM
it tricked me into taking it on Rich lol I only intended to do the outer arch lips, but now that has turned into all this lol :(

NOV4_SPORT
06-05-11, 07:38 PM
Lewis, you can get inner sections from a place i had a link but lost it, but will try to find it for you, or you can make outer repair sections work as inner ones, i did it for the sport, really not that hard tbh.

lol Get a new grinder and get onto it tomorrow matey.

Where did you buy the car from Curt? was it local ?

Lewis.
07-05-11, 10:34 PM
cheers guys, and thanks edd :thumb:
its surprising what they can hide Curt, it all looked fine untill i scraped some loose underseal off, then the big chunks of filler and newspaper came out the chassis leg lol

right, got a new grinder sorted out and got back on it
shiney new
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/06052011452.jpg

first patch, I cut out a lot more than the rot, to check the inside of the leg, which wasn't too bad

bottom of the chassis leg

side of the same leg. not completely welded here

rear splash guardy thing
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011464.jpg

meanwhile, Balley started stripping the front end.
he began by pulling a huge chunk of filler out of the OS wing
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011454.jpg

then he pulled the rest of it to bits. he does not look amused

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011456.jpg

battery tray drain has done a good job of the paint here. its only minor surface rust and will be treated
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011457.jpg

little hole in the splash guard
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011458.jpg

and front chassis leg. its all solid around that hole, will be ground down and plated

it then started to rain, so we erected (lol) the shanty town
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011466.jpg

new piece of inner arch clamped up
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011468.jpg

tacked
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011469.jpg

all welded, along with another piece too
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011474.jpg

Dan then sanded my wing
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011467.jpg

and hung it on. I quite like the way it looks tbh. it really defines the lines, and looks a bit like a drawing lol
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011471.jpg

Then cookie came round, and he and dan got on with one of the new doors

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011475.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011479.jpg

cookie tacked it in
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011484.jpg

the wind started blowing the gas shield away, so we added walls to the shanty town lol it's like our very own PNG where's wally lolhttp://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011488.jpg

arch all welded amd ground back. the sill still needs a bit of a repair before its done
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011490.jpg

then the manky old wing has a slight 'accident'
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011487.jpg

think i found the culprit lol

and the supervisor making sure the new seats are up to standards lol

how she's sat now
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/07052011491.jpg

so tomorrow, I'm going to do the little bit on the sill, and finish the arch off, then try and get the other side chassis leg done, and as much of the arch as I can, then finish the rest of after work next week, and then painted next weekend hopwfully :) it has to be done for the National Day!

This is yesterdays update.

So as there was nothing left to attatch the bottom of the new arch panel to, I started grinding the filler out the sill, and was left with this. a crap previous repair, and plenty more holes too. yum
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011492.jpg

so chopped the rot out
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011493.jpg

cut a plate and tacked it on, and got the arch all lined up right
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011494.jpg

and seamed it all up

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011495.jpg

then i sealed the arch and chassis leg with some tetra shultz. will do the inside through the tail lamp hole later too. its messy sh*t but looks nice and OE :)
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011496.jpg

then Cookie turned up, and worked his magic on the arch

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011500.jpg

first coat of filler
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011501.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011502.jpg

then got on with the other chassis leg whilst he was doing that

found another hole :(
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011503.jpg

cut the rest of the chassis leg out
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/08052011504.jpg

made the bottom of the leg, and the front. started tacking and forming the front and got to here when I ran out of wire  so thats all for sunday

---

bought a 5KG roll of wire today, went up to 0.8mm wire while i was at it, so bought some new 0.8mm tips too, but the c*nt gave me the wrong tips so havn't been able to do anything tonight, so i'm fooking pissed off now

Balley

Well done mate, its shocking how bad that get in the same areas..

thanks, and I know, its quite worrying to think how bad it was. now i can be happy that it's got some strength back in it!

Can i get a reeeeeeeeeeshell. want to reshell my car tbh anyways, anytime can tell

i'd just repair what you have mate, as every shell it going to be rotten in places you can only dream of. unless its some delivery mileage minter, but thats unlikely lol

blue

not the Herald you tit, the paint for your wheels :p lol

Balley
09-05-11, 08:25 PM

I fancy buying a shell with some heritage though, like a gsi gte sr etc. Anyways enough of my spamming here, top work sir, whats the best way in painting and blending into original paint, as may do the drivers arch lip before pv if i get chance

then buff

Connor

meh will give it ago, cant look any worse than it looks now lol

Lewis.
09-05-11, 10:49 PM
Oh kawasaki green. with pearl!

hmmm, interesting...

Connor, I see where your coming from, but the only person who will know that you have a GSI shell is the lady in the post office when you tax it lol for all you lot know, my 'SR' could be a merit shell ;) and I don't think there is anything wrong with replicas either, my old corsa was a 1.2 swing, but was a full SRI rep, was badged as such, and I called it an SRI. the only thing that wasn't SRI was the logbook.
and don't ask me paint questions, Balley will vouch for the fact that I should never be allowed anywhere near any form of paint lol

Connor
09-05-11, 10:58 PM
nah i have nothing against reps, but i would love just a standard gsi, plus if i buy an actual gsi/gte and insure the same mods its 400 quid cheaper on insurance lol

Lewis.
09-05-11, 11:07 PM
yeah suppose its better insurance wise mate. if you do get a GSI then sell me your comps lol vulture much lol

Connor
09-05-11, 11:13 PM
Curt was going to try on my comps when he had your sr, would look amazing i think. But i couldn't sell me comps.... never lol

Lewis.
09-05-11, 11:20 PM
i agree, comps are the best wheels ever. end of. did you buy yours new?

Connor
09-05-11, 11:24 PM
nope bought them off a friend who bought them for his punto 2.0t project, but the wilwoods caught on them so he sold them to me for 180 with new (-100miles) tyres on. Hes got a set of comp th2's on atm and he isnt a fan s i should be buying them in a few weeks hopefully woop :)

Curtoise
10-05-11, 09:50 AM
connor i dont think your arch would be that bad to do seeing as its white, quite an easy colour to work with i think.

Lewis.
10-05-11, 01:25 PM
I quite like TH2's, but i think they only suit certain cars, where as MO's suit everything :) what you putting them on?

zeifer33
10-05-11, 03:19 PM
Hi Lewis, I would like to ask you a question, what are the jets that I have to make larger?

http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/8693/foto0218p.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/838/foto0218p.jpg/)

Lewis.
10-05-11, 07:06 PM
You just need to drill the main jets, circled here in red :thumb:

Fantastic Lewis lot of thanks:thumb: I hope that these weeks i try the firts start;)

Lewis.
10-05-11, 07:18 PM
No problem mate :) I hope you have fewer problems than I did.

zeifer33
10-05-11, 07:21 PM
My engine its a 16SE or a nova GTE 1.6L. I will make the first attempt with the electric fuel pump, a pressure regulator and jets expanded to 2.0 mm. By the way, what fuel pressure you are using?

Lewis.
10-05-11, 07:24 PM
sounds good mate. I'm using the bike fuel pump, which cuts out when the bowls are full, so it will never over flow the bowls. I think 3psi is about right for most carbs though.

zeifer33
10-05-11, 07:29 PM
I see, the fuel pump has built-in pressure regulator, no?

Lewis.
10-05-11, 08:47 PM
sort of. its an 'interuptor' pump, so it only runs when there is demand for fuel. it senses the pressure in the carbs and stops pumping when it reaches this. then when the pressure drops it starts up again

Lewis.
11-05-11, 08:16 PM
I had today off work, so have been busy again :)

started off by finishing the plate from before the wire ran out
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011507.jpg

then did the other patch
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011508.jpg

and started the bottom of the inner arch
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011509.jpg

and cut a piece for the top too
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011510.jpg

tacked and then offered the arch up
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011511.jpg

was all good so blasted it on
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011512.jpg

then did the awkward corner piece to join it to the previous bit
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011513.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011514.jpg

and tacked the other even more awkward corner piece
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011515.jpg

bent to shape
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011516.jpg

and done
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011517.jpg

one finished inner arch :d
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011518.jpg

seam sealered
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011519.jpg

Lewis.
11-05-11, 08:22 PM
then with some trimming and joggling got the outer skin on nice and straight
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011520.jpg

gave the inner arch and new chassis leg a good coat of red oxide (and the drum too  )
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011527.jpg

and some pictures of cookies handiwork :thumb:
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011521.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011522.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/11052011523.jpg

so now all I need to do is whack 2 small plates on the rear panel and front splash guards, then i can shcultz it all. hopefully cookie can fill the other arch for me at the weekend, then it can have some paint! not sure if it will be ready for top coat or not, so it may be at the national day in primer lol

got tomorrow off work too, so should be done very soon

Shultz is horrible stuff mate, very oilly and dirt will stick to it meaning moisture will as well

Get a overpaintable stone guard, U-Pol Graviguard is good stuff well priced too

Good work so far tho

Its not as bad as people think, the fact that its very oily means that water wont stick to it, as it just beads off it, and as it never fully dries, it is self healing. it also contains a corrosion inhibitor. though tbh the rest of the car will be sprayed in black waxoyl, imo it is far superior.

I'm not a fan of stone chip, or any drying product for that matter, as it looks great even when theres loads of water stuck behind it rotting everything away. much like the original rubbish.
Thanks though :) :thumb:

aye its worse than I thought, but luckily its gone now, so should be a few more years without any trouble :) just get stuck in, it wil always be repairable :thumb:

you coming over saturday morning Dan?

Lewis.
12-05-11, 04:18 PM
Today has been ****. started off by taking the dog to the vet to be put to sleep, so my welding mask is a bit damp now

never the less, it was still back panel day, so I started off by having a bit more of a bash about, and then a grind. both ends were pretty fooked

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011528.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011529.jpg

first plate tacked
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011530.jpg

and welded
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011531.jpg

other side tacked
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011532.jpg

and welded
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011533.jpg

not too bad
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011534.jpg

gave it a coat of red oxide
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011535.jpg

I also redid one of the previous repairs to the boot floor, as it hadnlt been done properly, so had rotten even further  forgot the pictures though

while that was drying, I did the drivers side splash guard. wasn't too bad
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011536.jpg

seems i forgot to take a picture of that, and the OSF chassis leg, and the corner of the headlight panel, so you will have to use your imagination.
more red oxide
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011537.jpg

Lewis.
12-05-11, 04:23 PM
then painted the back panel
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011538.jpg

then schultz'd the arches
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011540.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011541.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011539.jpg

inside the arches looks like this
http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/12052011543.jpg

still need to do the passenger side splash guard, but I havn't got any steel left, so need to aquire some from work tomorrow. also used almost an entire X sized bottle of gas  only got 50 bar left. thats another £35 I could do without  :(

so anyway, thats that, hopefully we can get it painted at the weekend!

goodo. And ta, I can finally see the end! although I forgot to half inch some steel from work so we will need to see what we can do out of the odds and ends for that last splash guard

Oh I know, but you should know what I'm like by now lol

bad news about your dog mate,

projects looking good

why thank you very much :d should hopefully be done very soon!

14-05-11, 12:17 PM
pah, it's raining and blowing a fooking gale :( not ideal for welding or spraying
why cant I afford a unit lol

Lewis.
14-05-11, 10:54 PM
well todays plans were to finish filling the arches, prime the quarters, doors and wings, and them tomorrow see about getting some top coat on. obviously this didnly happen as the weather was pretty sh*t.

so instead, the filler that has already been done was primed to keep the rain off it, and i then put it back together so it is usable, as i need it for tuesday.

i'm really pissed off now, as it won't be done for the national day, and I hate driving cars when they are half painted like this. My old astra had the back of one sill in red oxide for a couple of weeks and that was bad, but this takes the piss

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/14052011550.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/14052011549.jpg

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/Nova%20rebuild/14052011548.jpg

a short drive reveals that the tyres catch the arch lips, even with no load and on 185/65R14's so they will require attention before its painted.

and it also looks like a tractor at the back now, dont know why.

stupid piece of sh*t

Balley
14-05-11, 11:55 PM
It looks right for 40 springs tbh mate. Are you sure its the arch lip not the inner arch as mine only every touched the inner arch (where the inner joins the outer)

Lewis.
15-05-11, 11:25 AM
they are 60mm springs dan, and its definitely the outer lip, i'll show you later

and its lowerd on gmax shocks and springs 60mm

dj_wudgey
15-05-11, 12:28 PM
**** it mate even if you have to drive her like that at least she's coming back together!! ohh get them bumpers grey though lol and she will look awesome!!

Lewis.
15-05-11, 12:45 PM
yeah, I suppose it looks better in primer than it did with rotten arches. shows its being worked on rather than neglected I suppose.
And now i know there is some strength in the chassis thats an added bonus too lol

nah not keen on gray bumpers on black cars. I'd certainly have them gray on a white or red SR though. like yours looks mint with them gray, but it wouldn't suit body coloured ones.
It is having the splitter in gray though :thumb:

Connor
15-05-11, 12:55 PM
would rather drive a car with solid primered arches, than ones that are foobard.
Sure will get it looks tip top in no time matey

Lewis.
15-05-11, 01:16 PM
yeah your right mate. I'm just pissed cos I wanted it done for national day. only got 2 weekends to get it finished for PVS now though :(

Lewis.
22-05-11, 10:05 PM
well it made it to the national day with no problems, other than the carbs guzzling fuel like it was going out of fashion

it looked a right state, but it came 1st in 'show a sh*tter' so its all good lol

http://i658.photobucket.com/albums/uu307/hay_lewis_68/cars/22052011585.jpg

not got alot to apdate on really, other than that a window regulator cable has snapped, so I can't open my window, the exhaust sounds like a steel band is playing under my car, and these carbs are sh*t lol

Oh yeah, and I got some new air filters, do you think they are a tad large? lol
