now that ive made 15 i can finally post up pics of my nova project.

so the story is my dad owns a garage in the town we live in ,there used to be a nova gte that came in for sevicing and repairs every once in a while .a few weeks ago the owner phoned my dad and asked if he could come round and price welding on the nova.so we went round to see it but my my dad said he couldnt do the welding as it was to much hassel and we left it at that.but two weeeks ago we got a phone call from the owner saying that he was moving house and couldnt take it with him so it was for sale so my dad knowing that i love novas bought it for me as my first car

the previous owner was craig and he is a member on hear with the user name GTE999 i think

like i say i am only 15 the now so i have a few years yet to get it road worthy

so enough from me heres some pics

andy, going by the photos its a nice car, but i can 100% guarantee that the whole shell will be totally rotten and not worth saving, your easiest/cheapest and in the long run best way forward buddy, is to buy member(cle) shell of here which looks like all you'll need, he's close to you and its a good shell with a very good price, people might disagree but im giving you honest advice which to me is the way forward for ya :thumb:

Sold them all and just kept a hold of my MK1 Ultra Burner and a Mk2 Chopper.

P.s - Wise choice IMO keeping the original GTE Shell, just get the welder out and tackle it, i hate reshells, and i love GTE's :thumb: lol

How are you getting on with thes? Should be a nice project, great to see mk1's being saved. Looks a good base, i've two mk1's myself, a nova gte and a corsa gsi, they've both very good shells, but one was gone at the rear at the sill, and the other behind the turrets, like yours, but once you get the rust cut out neatly and cleanly its easy enough after that to let in fresh metal. don't be discouraged by rot, even a lot of the better shells have one or two small little spots needing welding. Taking your time cutting out the rot properly and neatly is the key. Have fun.

AndyGTE95
17-03-11, 06:35 PM
well a small update on the nova

when i got the car it had bigger 2.0l discs and calipers off a astra gte for better stopping power ,but the bigger calipers wouldnt fit the standard 14" wheels so we bought new discs and calipers for it and i fitted them down at the garage after school :thumb:

so some pics

up in the air

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00082.jpg

wheel off and old 2.0l brakes

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00084.jpg

then some minty new discs and calipers added with some mintex pads

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00085.jpg

also while it was up i had a look underneth it

is pretty good just some parts that i will rub down and underseal again

i noticed that the fuel lines were a bit crusty so i wire brushed them and painted them with red oxide primer.

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00081.jpg

well thats it for today more updates at the weekend.
oh and just to mention i only done one side of the brakes as when i was taking the old calpier bolts off one rounded so i have orderd up a new one and will do the other side at the weekend :thumb:

ive also got 2 new wings on the way as well

so after that i stripped the grill, bumper and wings off to see what surprises were under neith for me.

thaks for the comments guys :thumb:

well been very very busy friday and today so an update is due.

well started on friday with the other caliper and disc on, and blead up so i finally have brakes for when i take it in and out of the garage.

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00069.jpg

i then took out the battery out to show the full extent of the rott.

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00072-3.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00073-3.jpg

someone has done a bodge job on it before by the thickness of filler at the bottom of the tray

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00078-1.jpg

after that i called it a day.

and today i started by putting it on the ramp and taking the rear wheel off

then the brush on underseal got cracked open and painted the inside of the rear arch

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00083.jpg

whilst that was drying i took of the drum and cleaned up the shoes

whilst the drum was off i found some red caliper paint and painted the drum red

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00082-1.jpg

looks sexy now

after that was dry the wheel went back on and i started on the front

i firstly stripped all, the old underseal off the splash gaurd and inner wing

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00066.jpg

then got the grinder with the wire wheel on it and got rid of all the rusty parts

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00088.jpg

after that was done i cracked open the seam sealer and went round all the seams

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00091.jpg

it was then on with the masking paper and some panel wipe on the inner wing

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00093.jpg

then for the fun part around 3 coats of red oxide primer

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/ImportedPhotos00096-1.jpg

Hi there

ive not been on the fourm for a while and havent updated my thread for ages.ive been really busy with my exams, and have recently left school and started collage ,studying vehicle body repair .

in that time i have done loads to my nova . the battery tray has been cut out and new one welded in and all sealed up , the passengers turret is welded and sealed up and the hole in the passengers foot well has been welded sealed and painted and the biggest job so far is the front pannel which i have just started today, so far we have just cut the old one off in prep for the new one to be welded on.

i have pictures of the front pannel being done but i have left the camera with pictures of all the other jobs at the garage but hopefully they sould be up soon .

so heres my new front pannel that i got off ebay

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0004.jpg

first job all the wiring sniped off the pannel and top and bottom hoses of the rad and the rad lifted out

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0002.jpg

then up in the air tiebar mounts buzzed off and airsaw and ginder to take off the old front pannel

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-9036144A-932283-480.jpg

spotwelds drilled and front chassie leg cleaned with the grinder

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0006.jpg

then my repair pannel sliped into place ready to be set up and welded

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-BA4572D2-981030-480.jpg

thats all i got done today it took longer than i expected to cut the old one off
hopefully get a bit more done on monday

cheers Andy:thumb:

hi there everyone

cheers for all the supportive comments :thumb:

well got a bit more done today

the front pannel and the inner wing repair panels are on and welded up .

so some pics

the new pannel offerd up and clamped into place

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-9A2FE1A3-1060282-480.jpg

we just cut the rotten bit off the front of the inner wing pannel and and just sat the new pannel behind it so it is double walled for strength

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-015B73B4-840896-480.jpg

the same on the other side fully seam welded

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-983B6CBA-990666-480.jpg

then the outside welded and ground down

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-D7953CAF-847889-480.jpg

and the other side

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/4-6CBF7054-895534-480.jpg

that was all for today but its eventually getting there :d

just the cill and a bit on the turret to go and thats all the welding done

thanks for looking

Just read your whole thread Andy. Really impressed! Firstly for being 15 and tackling such a project, secondly for saving another gte and thirdly for doing a vehicle body repair course to help you do it! I must admit you remind me of when I started out in vehicle body repair......... all those years ago ;)

Just thought id mention something I wished I had done when I was younger, if you do decide to modify it, do it in such a way it can be reversed, you may change your mind in 10 years time if you still have it, because it will be a classic in the future... oh and keep all of the origional stuff.

+rep for you chap! :thumb:

Well Andy just read through your thread and firstly your fairly similar to myself I did my first Nova at 17 over a year and a half ago (only thing is yours is a GTE mine is 1L) and it is a great achievement when you are finished. Keep up the good work don't give up on it make sure you finish it out cos sometimes it will get annoying and you will want to give up but don't all the best with the rest of the resto.

well got lots of work done to the nova today . thats all the welding finished on the passengers side and the wheelarch has benn painted sealed and gravatexed

hi all

got sme more done today , a really steaming ahead with it now

so the pics

found a large hole under the drivers turret near the splashgaurd

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00005-1.jpg

so i cut the old rot out

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00008.jpg

a then made up a plate

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00011.jpg

and my dad welded it up

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00012.jpg

the other side of the turret was the same so
http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00006-1.jpg

it was cleaned up

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00006-1.jpg

a made a wee plate

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00014.jpg

and it was welded

also the little lit that goes across the turret was rotten away so a made one and my dad welded it up

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/ImportedPhotos00015.jpg

well that was all for today but its so close to be being finished now

cheers andy

hi all just a little update for today

as i sayed i have started a collage course studing vehicle body repair which i have being doing for a few months now and starting this week i am doing two weeks work experiance in my dads mates body shop so when we havent been busy i have been prepping my nova to get painted :d

so firstly on monday this week my new wings came so i started on them first

i 320'd them down with a da

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0063.jpg

i then got them in the booth and pannel wiped them

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0064.jpg

i was then allowed to give them a hit with some hight build primer

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0065.jpg

they are sitting just now with a quick guide coat but they have still to be flattened

so today i took the bonnet off and brought it round

it started with the underside first, i scraped all the little bubbles of rust to see how bad it was

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0066-1.jpg

wasent to bad so a grounded them down thith the little air grinder sander

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0068.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0069.jpg

i then 320'd the whole underneth of the bonnet ready for primer

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0070.jpg

so that was that for monday and today so tomorrow i will hopefully do the top of the bonnet and get that in primer

please comment

cheers andy :thumb:

Good progress.

I think you should get more rust off the drivers side turret though before you paint over it because it will get worse.

There was little bits of rust i left on my nova and undersealed over them and the car has sat in the garage for 2 year and rust has come back through, so make sure its all perfectly clean and shiny before you paint it.

bazil
01-11-11, 10:58 PM
^^ what he said, you need to be very carefull you don't seal the rust in, I done that once lollollol

Paying the bloody price for it now :(

hi all

well i have been very busy over the past two weeks as all of the welding has been done on the nova and i am pleased to announce that it has been painted

so firstly i had the two sides stripped dow and da'd and and repairs done

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0079.jpg

i had then spent ages with the wirewheel on the grinder taking allthe old underseal off good thing as i found new holes

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0081.jpg

so i cut the old rot out

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0083.jpg

and new plates were put in but a cant find the pic

i id the same with the back arch and found more holes so they were plated and the inner and outer cill welded up

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0088.jpg

so after the welding was finished the repairs were done and it got primed

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0094.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0095.jpg

so next night it was masked up put in the booth ready for paint

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/IMAG0098.jpg

hi all

ive have had a lot of progress on the nova since my last update and as it sits just now all i have left to do is re-fit the sideskirts and a full servive and timing belt and its more or les ready for the road

so heres a few pics to show you what i have achieved

since my last update i have removed the back axel , painted and poly bushed it

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0433_zps5349b3c8.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0434_zps39066dba.jpg

added the red bumper strip

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0436_zps7ab2adae.jpg

when i got the car i noticed the fuel pump was cable tied up as the bobbins had snapped so i bought 4 brand new fuel pump bobbins from vauxhall which came to the grand total of £20 !! so a fiver a bobbin and they didnt even give me new nuts grr

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0566_zps69798234.jpg

i then built the axel back up with brand new shoes , wheel cylinders , wheel bearings, handbrake cables , brakes pipes and a brand new spring and clip it so every thing is new bar the drums

ive also had my rear springs and fuel filler neck powder coated and looks very clean
http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0579_zpscfb65914.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0578_zps00778668.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0580_zpsf7adc41f.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0581_zps79f5dc81.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0582_zps147d8b6c.jpg

ive also finaly properly refitted the front end up instead of just stiting the parts on

firstly a wee bit of waxoil behind the lights to keep the rot out

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0584_zps3337e238.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0585_zps9cb4bb18.jpg

then the front build up with brand new hella lights and orange indicators instead of the clear ones

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0590_zps720c8126.jpg

and finally hen i fitted my new 4 branch i went to it my original system but it didnt fit so i went all out and bought a brand ne sportex system to match my manifold

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0588_zps780a1557.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0589_zpsfaec0de1.jpg

http://i801.photobucket.com/albums/yy291/AndyBmx95/nova%20GTE/IMAG0591_zps52871593.jpg
