Just thought id start a new WIP as im doing work on it, i was meant to be selling it to fund our new house but i got carried away tidying it up lol as long as the Mrs doesnt find out exactly what im spending on it ill be ok!:thumb:

The story starts with me seeing the car locally parked outside the barbers, so i pulled over and went inside to find out whos it was, and a little old guy stood up proud to announce it was his, i asked him if he wanted to sell it, which he said no so i gave him my number and left it at that.
But 6 or 8 month later i got a phone call from the guy Arthur, he said he was now too old to drive and wanted rid, it ad been out once since id last seen him and that was to get another trim at the barbers again! i went strait up after work and we eventually agreed a price a week later and i drove it away! The exhaust was shot but everything else seemed spot on!
But anyway heres some pics of how it was when i got her home

and theyre all as it came, not even cleaned, polished hoovered etc, (as you can probably tell)
Arthur did have a few little scrapes in the car as his drive was narrow leading to his garage, where it has been kept every night of its 26 year life!
And it doesnt have a passenger mirror so i guess that made it even more difficult.
Plans were

full service and full new exhaust(NOW DONE)
To have both sides painted
a full buff
replacement front carpet(has a piece of capet stuck over a hole)
replacement front drivers seat or have it repaired.
have the wheels refurbed or get some suitable replacements
general mince about and clean it all upBut when it went to get painted the rear arches were a lot worse than i thought and i didnt want to bodge it all up with filler.
So off i went to get 2 rear arch repair panels from Beevers, as its only 20 mins ish away from me, £22 each which i didnt think was too bad, they did sound very surprised when i asked for them tho! lol

so heres a few pics after the arches were fitted, i never got chance to take pics of the bad rust before the arches were fitted as i forgot my camera!:tard:

http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af11/maddogdaz666/nova%20saloon/DSCN0064.jpg

he didnt fit the full arch as i didnt want to be able to see the repair on the inside of the boot, he's cut away the rust and the cut the piece needed from the repair panels. So far im happy with his work, it did need finishing off as he's ran out of gas!

On the drivers side rear, most of the arch was replaced but on the passenger side rear, only the bottom 6" or so of the arch, front and back, was replaced.

Dont worry about all the filler as it was the last layer and hadnt been sanded yet.

any comments welome
Cheers, Darrel.

Oh and ive had these made too, the dealer logo stickers have come out perfect! But im not happy with the number plates as the dealer logo is just stuck on the top and its in the New style lettering, I did ask for them to be in the old style :( Ill get some more made up at a later date.

i got a phone call today saying that i will have it back by the 28th of march, so then i need to put it all back together.
i will be going up before to get some more progress pics tho :)

One thing i cant make my mind up on, The wheels. do i get them refurbed? or fit some 15" steelies and get them redone in silver?
i have 9 15" steelies but only one 195 45 15 tyre :tard: all the rest are baloon tyres 185 65 15!
i also keep thinking about getting the 13" steelies banded 2" ish?

G-nova
16-03-11, 05:16 PM
I would get the original wheels refurbished and use them in summer. Then for the winter use 14" SR steelies or even 15" like you were saying

i think ive found some wheels, and Conner has done me a photoshop, Top Lad:thumb: Thinking of having the rims re-polished or chromed and the centres done Brazil brown :d
I know theyre not origional but i can use them while i refurb the standards and keep them in the garage and then swap em whenever i fancy :d

IMO keep her on steelies mate. Get the original ones refurbished (and probably banded while you're at it) for summer and another set for winter/off season use.

Enjoy! And don't let your new house get in the way of your hobby!

swap it you for a astra estate

tempting but the nova makes me smile more!
(and ive already had the astra estate in my name 3 times!) lol

looking good matey, did you mate paint it in his house garage? Who made them stickers / plates up Want some foe JNB'y lol

yes my mate's been painting cars/vans/bikes/anything since school painted it in his garage, its not 100% good and nowhere near benn or nick j standard's but good for the money. It needs the drivers door painting again as the paints not thick enough and the drivers rear arch where i damaged it with the new wheels :(
and the local sign shop took pictures and measurements of the dealer stickers and numberplates and re-made them for me nobby.

banded steelies deal fell through so im sticking with the current rims, went to the nationals weekend and the car got a lot of praise so im a very happy man! :)
Me and the Mrs got the keys to our new house on friday so this project will be even slower now, all my money will be spent on the house.
But i have a little list of jobs to do before pv and billing:
Rear arch repainted(the alloys caught and bent the arch)
Refurb alloys
Change the front shocks
Clean and paint all the suspention components,
Clean everything under the bonnett.
Possibly drop the engine out and clean and paint the engine and ancillaries.
After thats all done ill be even happier.

I'll be taking the helpers out too before anyone mentions them lol

I'm after a set of -100mm rear springs if anybody has a set? or possibly lower?
Either that or I'm after a rear axel so I can customise it to make it sit lower without it sitting on the bump stops and bring the rear hubs in slightly. It's an idea I've had in my head for quite some time now.

Cheers for all the positive comments guys,
The paint job looks bang on from 5 yards but look closer and the paint has sunk all over and you can see sanding marks, and the bonnet and some other places seem to have a lot of very tiny bubbles in the paint? Whatever that is :tard:
So if the mrs allows it (inbetween getting a new bathroom, and the house rendoring), Arthur will be getting painted again next winter including under the bonnet hopefully and all the engine and bits and bobs and suspension doing if I can hide the costs from the mrs lol

If you have what looks like bubbles in the paint that could be micro blisters, basically the paint was applied while the panels were cold or damp, it's the moisture working back up through the paint, I had it on my old Gsi, best get a heated booth or summer respray dude.

Other than that it look ace, what's the size and width and offset on your wheels?

maddogdaz666
12-05-13, 10:58 AM
Cheers Scott, that sounds about right as it got painted in a garage, he does have a big heater? Which I bet he didn't use as the weathe wasn't too bad when he was painting.

The wheels are 15" 7j et28 with 165/50/15 tyres.
The rears just touch with a full car but some camber shims should sord that. And a bit of camber on the front when I go lower will help the front too

Could be fish eyes/silicones if he had a contaminated air supply, or he didn't degrease the panel properly. But it looks 100 times better, my saloon has had a cheap paint job at some point, it would be better if it was all original but then again it wouldn't be as shiney! lol

Looking good Daz! I've got to say I think the wheels look sooooo much better without any centres at all though? Either way though looks cool as....

Yeah I've been playing with the centres on and off and still unsure, I'd have to machine the lug off that holds the centre caps on if I run them without. I might take em off for a while to see what I think

Funny one, i like the look with the center caps. As seeing the hub nut looks poo, but i find the center caps odd....

Lovely shine you have on bodywork. I think I prefer the car without the plough. The front valance looks really good and very euro.

Good spot, it's because the centre caps arnt the origionals for the wheels. I keep meaning to get other centre caps to try but, it's not high on my list of necessity.

next up is an interior retrim, I have some SR seats that I'm having retrimmed in OEM cloth and leather.

Exactly, lol just a washer on the bottom two bolts, where the hub bolts to the axel

I had to put an extra washer on the front bolt as it caused it to toe in without it. Depends how low you are though.

I bought this about 5 month back and done nothing but abuse it. Genuine Cav Turbo. It needs a resto as all the paintwork is knackard. It's running an f20 too so I need an f28 with flywheel an clutch. I've already got a transfer box and prop to re-fit. I've also collected a full spare 4x4 turbo running gear so I'm sending most of the parts for powdercoat before I refit them all.

Back to the nova.
I picked up these last week from Josh. I've not tried to fit them yet as they're out Of an Opel manta ill need to remove the covers from the rear bench seat and have the manta ones adjusted to fit. I'm hoping there will be enough offcut then to repair the drivers bolster.
