View Full Version : Your opinions on which front end

I was dead set on a Mk2 GSi front end for the Saloon, just like on my old hatch:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j125/Johnnyaspec/SEFnew31.jpg?t=1300223033
I am using the same FMIC which is a great fit, so it was the obvious choice... until I saw this pic:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j125/Johnnyaspec/IMG_4786.jpg?t=1300222246
Its owned by someone on here and I instantly fell in love!! and I hate red cars!!
As all you guys know the reason most turbo boys opt for the Mk2 GSi bumper is its ability to hide them FMIC's and boost pipes, well I MIGHT be able to get away with the Mk1 front end as my FMIC and pipes are about 2 inches further back than normal:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j125/Johnnyaspec/DSC00508.jpg
As you can see its very deep so it might be enough..
So what do you think? GSi Mk2, or Retro Mk1 snowplough??
Just how rare is the Mk1 Snowplough??
Also any suggestions about cooling mods in conjunction with a Mk1 snowplough and this FMIC layout?

You've put the engine in the wrong way mate!
And mk1 front for me especially on a saloon.
Absolutly loving the White hatch.

A lot of people have said the mk1 front end suits a saloon better.
Thanks for the comment on the hatch, my old Nova turbo. Loved it but it hid a lot of rust!

if you run a plow you will need the i/c behind the grill i would of thought as the plow will not give any air flow

Saw this at Billing last year, totally loved it mate. You taken the 'V' out of the crossmember to fit the FMIC? This is what I did on the hatch but things are much more extreme for the loon.

MK1 Front end on a loon looks miles better, but a Plough will offer virtually no airflow to the Intercooler...
What about a GTE front end?

Main concern, it may fit but hardly any airflow. But I guess I will find a way around this... it may involve a grinder

I like the bumper itself but the whole one-piece bumper with super slatted grille is working for me, I love it

I work for a courier chap, I would NEVER post a bumper even one as robust and flexible as the snowplough bumper.
mk2 ftw
that red loon is for sale btw

love this saloon nova  its a tough call what front end by im a mk2 lover so id have to say mk2 gsi :)
Floydy's saloon is ace.
BUT I prefer Mk2 front end tbh, which is why I fitted one to mine (sort of lol). Especially with an intercooler, a plough would be pointless unless you're thinking of cutting a gaping hole in one - be prepared for negative comments if you do. Also most ploughs tend to go for strong money unless they're battered.
Plus the GSi bumper has acres more space behind it than any std Mk1 front end. I know you said your I/C was quite well fitted, but even so.

I thought the Mk1 snowplough will command a good price, but I am likely to buy one and see how bad it is. I can always sell it on if its too tight.
i know its an astra but i love this look, could be done with a mk1 small bumper

I'd have to say get the mk1 snow plough
I'm really thinking about getting one myself for my mk2 SR
think they gorgeous ....
Wheres the burgo option?
I opt for a kindom developments front bumper lol
Only kidding, im my opinion, mk1 looks definately ftw, but thinking in terms of what would look better with a fmic, probably a mk2 tbh.
Have you considered perhaps not going for a plough and going for a mk1 gte/sr combo with the front mount. like dave dixons old gte
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/nova-turbo/General%20pics/IMG_6560.jpg
Or maybe as mentioned earlier a small bumper combo like whats on c20tbo
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c91/c20tbo/nova/nova3.jpg
Only reason im mentioning these is that i think a snow plough would look gash if it had a cut out for a fmic, and if you didnt cut it out then it would be very restrictive
OR just ditch the FMIC in favour of a chargecooler and mount the heat exchanger behind the grill. Then you can fit whatever bumper you like :d

I love the mk2 gsi front end but as has been said before yours would be best left as mk1 and maybe fit a plough, and have some form of cold air feed/ducting to the fmic maybe cutting the holes for spotlights and using those for the cold air feed.

that would be the way i would go if using a plow
Can't go wrong with a mk1,the best shape,even tho i have a mk2 nova lol

You can get a cooler comofrtably behind an sr/gte bumper johny and look tidy. Take a look at now Nick Js mustard SR.
If you're running the snowplough I'd go chargecooler route. Got one I'd sell you as it happens! lol

GTE Bumper, don't ruin a Snow plough

Snowplough, but just use the top
Could always do this and have the best of both, GTE front but slated grill.

MK1 all day long, and then use a charge cooler like Jack said. A snowplough would be cool, but if you cut it up then the PNG Mafia will put you in the bottom of a river lol

Meh, not the first time. Learnt how to hold me breath now
Its only a bumper... Who cares if he cuts it up. Fit what you want and trim the least to fit.
