well seeing as there are a few of u's who ride im in need of a little help

i have some Marzocchi Dirt Jumper 1s, the problem is im only getting about 35-45mm travel on them and i should be getting either 80 or 100mm. I read some tutorial about taking out the compression tube but it was that shoddily written i didnt understand it.

anyone know what could be causing this or how to fix such problems?

im wondering if a good strip down and clean might help

Depends what spring they are, are they air/oil, spring and cartridge or good old elastomers lol

Bubba

um :/ this is the tech spec
- Available colors: white
- 100mm Travel
- R Rebound Cartridge
- Air PL
- One Side Coil
- Alloy Steer Tube
- 32mm Aluminum Stanchions
- 6” Post Mount (Max Disc 8”)
- 20mm Axle

link to site link (http://www.marzocchi.com/template/detailProdotti.asp?LN=UK&idIU=2464&idC=1561&IdFolder=113&idMY=55897&uf=IU&IdOggetto=55959#)

im pretty sure they are air/oil...seeing as there is oil in them...and an air valve on top

Sounds to me like they have lost pressure, does you have a shock pump, and does the Marzocchi website list the psi they should be at?

Bubba
13-03-11, 06:59 PM
i did think that...but wouldnt that just affect the stiffness and not the travel? i have taken the cap off the air side and there was no pressure in it.

i did put some air in it using a foot pump but i have no idea how much...but they went quite stiff

Spudly
13-03-11, 07:01 PM
Nah it needs to be a proper high pressure shock pump, think about it, if your tyre has no air in it, the height of the car sags down, same thing it will partially compressed and thats why you have limited travel, see if Marzocchi lists the pressures or visit your LBS and ask them nicely if they will/can inflate it:thumb:

Bubba
13-03-11, 07:11 PM
so...they should sit at the correct height...but they wont compress the full 100mm?

Bubba
13-03-11, 07:24 PM
actually, thinking about it...i undid the bottom bolt on the compression side...and they moved up about 40-50mm...so they wernt at full extension. ill try the air tomorrow :)

Spudly
13-03-11, 07:28 PM
No they shouuld sit fully topped out, they will however have a certain amount of sag once youre on the bike, this is normal but travel will be measured at the parked ride height, i.e. the unladen position of the fork, if theyre 100mm for example, and your weight compresses them by 40mm, then you only have 60mm of travel, but when you go over stuff they will extend on the downside of the obstacle if you get my wording, keeps you floating which is the purpose of the suspension, otherwise they would clunk and topout everytime they return to top position, and the spring rate would be so harsh you would only have about 10mm of travel so that the spring had the force to top itself out again lol

Bubba
13-03-11, 07:33 PM
yeh i get that. storing it upside down shouldnt have any effect on the forks should it? i keep it upside down in the hallway as its easier to tuck it away

Spudly
13-03-11, 07:37 PM
Err possibly as its air/oil, you wouldnt store your engine upside down would you as the oil would seep out or go in the wrong places internally, see where this is going.....

My mate had some zocchies years back in the '90s, the instructions said they had to be stored upright for three days prior to initial inflation to make sure the oil was in the correct places before the shock was pumped up with air!

....whoops. looks like a strip down is due next weekend maybe then lol

ah...so possibly ride for 3 days then inflate, seeing as its my workhorse atm

I'm having a similar problem with mine. A retro pair of Rockshox quadra 21r, except mine wont compress at all. Need to service these before I can get out n about on the bike.

Edit, Bubba theyre good but the plain colour ones 'yellow' 'gold' or 'red' were the best, closely followed by the later 'cream with red bands' judy xc's are where its at:d

Only have one pic, as it's just the beginning of a project. Only got my hands on it on Wednesday. Mate didn't want it, so it'll be my 'get into downhill' bike once it's sorted.

http://i464.photobucket.com/albums/rr3/rainingsulphur/Bike/IMG_0161.jpg

Mudguards are going, as are the seat, grips and pedals. Might get some raceface low risers, and if the rockshox can't be saved...i'll be on the hunt for some bomber z1's, or some manitou sx. Trying to keep it all in the same era.

theres a set of 96 Z1's on the bay atm...

currently no bids at 9.99....if they were 20mm axle id be tempted

Cant quite make out if thats acera-x or stx rear meach, doesnt fit in with the alivio crankset though lol

I keep trying to find an early '90s zaskar, i want one of the earlier ones with the 'all GT terra' stickering on the downtube, hope you know what i mean by that, its GT 'all terra' but the way i wrote it first is how they were stickered up:d

Tranz-x QR skewers and the front one is open:p

You signed up to retrobike.co.uk?

Is that www.singlespeed.com (http://www.singlespeed.com) owners club or what, i cant get my head round this single speed bollox, lets see you ride up a hill on an SS, an mtb has a variety of gears for a reason, why do away with them:wtf:

Aye im on retro bike, not been on for a while though, i spend too much time in the for sale section with nowhere near enough pennies lol

What've you got Spudly? Been into mtb for long? I'm trying to get back into it after a long long absence. A mate with a specialized hardrock sport convinced me to get into downhill. Aquired this free and this'll be my 'ride' yo!

Spudly
13-03-11, 08:32 PM
I was into mtb'ing since i could straddle a bike, ive only got an '08 carrera atm but im desperate for a '90s ride as my best years were BITD, and i stupidly gave it up ten or so years back, tis so hard getting back into it, i know nothing of bikes these days and everything i remember is gone, i want the '90s again lol

sulphur
13-03-11, 10:08 PM
How did you rate the judy XCs Spud? I was considering them instead of rebuilding the 21r's, mainly 'cos they're like £30-40 a set on eGhey. Not sure if they'd be too long, or have too much travel for my frame though.

I really enjoyed this thread, i was a cycle mechanic for 11 years and raced mountain bikes at elite level here and on the mainland for the same time.

The Qudra's use to freeze up due to water ingress and crappy elastomers.

Loved the pic of the old rock shox, in '94 i had the Mag 21 SL Ti's, bloody expensive at the time but certainly helped at the Malvern Classic.

Spudly

Iirc they only ran 63mm of travel and that might be with the LT kit, but cant quite remember, they were awesome forsk and i loved them, wish i could find some more tbh:cry:

Marc
13-03-11, 10:56 PM
With the LT kit the Judy's became rather flexy, they really needed deeper bushings in the legs.

Spudly
13-03-11, 11:01 PM
Actually now thats been said, i think the Judy and Indy XC were 63mm and the LTkit gave it 70mm did it not?

That's correct. The Indy was just a revamped quadra.

You want a pair of Judy xc's witha Risse Racing Cartridge fitted, 70mm of travel iirc!;)

well im thinking my forks need stripping and cleaning...managed to get a bit of pressure in them....and they went rock hard.

sulphur

Mine need stripping, cleaning and new elastomers I think, from what I've read anyway. Never done this before, kinda don't wanna fluff it up either. Just need to find a suitable and cheap tool kit to start off with. :)

It's not that hard, you need:

22mm spanner or socket to remove the top caps, it'll help if you loosen the bolts holding the stansions to the crown (be careful at the plastic used for the caps is crap)

You then need a long socket extension with a 5 or 6mm Allen head to remove the bolts inside the stansions that hold the lower legs on.

Chances are that the elastomers are dead, if so you can use ones from the later judy forks.

Hope this helps.

Marc.

thats about 25mm movement. :tard: now this is the thread i found on pinkbike about how to fix this but i get really confused at the end

pinkbikelink (http://www.pinkbike.com/forum/listcomments/?threadid=104530)

if someone could please explain the bit about the drilling and refitting if they understand it would be much appreciated. 20mm of travel is bloody annoying

On a differant note I've not used my mtb for about a year. In that time it was sat with the wheels off.
Now this was all ok till I went to put the wheels back on. Rear wheel was fine but the front had issues. I think themain problem was that somebody has pulled the front brake leaver.
It has a hope front disc brake but I'm un sure how to bleed it as the front brake now binds.
Any help would be great.

bleeds same was as a car, unscrew the hope cap to get to the resivior..pump the lever and open n shut the nipple as you would with a brake pedal...i do like the forks though :p

back to mine...
its done and drilled and i have all 100mm travel back...only problem is now they top out incredibly badly. so im going to compress the tube, sport weld both the holes i drilled and put it back in, thus creating some sort of pulling down on the fork.

will try and find a new tube though, i emailed suntour to ask them
