Make fags about £5 each.

The governement gets loads more tax revenue

and

if more people cant afford to smoke them. the NHS wont have to keep paying out on silly people dying of smoking related diseases.

Win win.

Maybe I'm stupid but I can't work out why this will increase counterfeit/import cigs?

Rich

^ what i thought, you have to ask for them now anyway

jonn
09-03-11, 08:27 PM
i was watching a documentry on counterfeit fags, when they tested them they found taces of rat cr@p and toe nail clippings, you could get 200 fags for €40

Andy
09-03-11, 08:27 PM
because it will make it easier for small shops to do it as they wont be on display

hayley, the tax revenue from fags(legit ones) used to more than pay for any medical treatment, but soon it won't....

iain, basically every time someone puts a new curb on cigarette sales, or makes it more of a pain to buy some, the knock off nigels will get more business..

the only smoking law i approve of is the ban on public place smoking... ie. pubs etc... but it was only needed because pubs used to have seperate smoke rooms, then they knocked them thru in the seventies to make all the pubs open plan, probably helped by some prat from health & safety going on about fire escapes.

The_General_Chancer

my ideal time was the 70's programs like the the sweeney made smoking look glamorous now we know more about medical grounds they try to outlaw it by making you feel trash about asking for some cigs.

i stopped smoking a year ago, the best thing i have EVER done. Its not till you stop and are "clean" that you notice just how antisocial it is, the smell of your clothes/car/house.

But to be honest i havnt noticed any financial gain, i was spending nearly £40 a week.

if pple want to smoke then you will not stop them. hiding the fags is pathetic, kids dont buy them because the packets are nicly decorated, they but them because they NEED them. lol. As if anybody NEEDS fags, thats just what they want you to think.

The government are arguing that it wont stop current smokers, but it will help stop people from starting.

My problem with that opinion is, how many people who smoke started by standing at the counter and going 'hmm, i wonder what they are, i think ill try some'? Probably none. Most started because someone else was smoking. I have my dad to thank for my habit. The bastid lol

Its not like Heroine is on a promotion shelf in Asda! But yet there are plenty of scag heads wondering around in a sweat with a crowbar shopping for car stereos!

They are even talking about making a law that all tobacco products will have to be sold in plain wrappers with no branding whatsoever. It really is an absolute joke.

mowgli
09-03-11, 10:30 PM
they should however take a look at off licences in oz.... government run bottle shops.... only if you are legal can you buy it over there..

Jack
09-03-11, 10:35 PM
Yep, this is pretty rediculous. Ask ANY smoker how they started and I guarantee you in 100% of the cases they won't say "because the packet behind the shelf looked pretty" lol - its all down to environment, i.e. parents/friends smoking.

As for the tax revenue, I'd like to say ta very much to all the smokers out there as you paid for my chemo lol Long may it continue. As soon as the revenue dries up, they'll need to source the funding from somewhere else!

From a quick google, it seems in 2003 HMR&C nobbled £9.3bn out of smokers... whilst the NHS spent £3.4bn of its ~£70bn budget on (all of its) cancer services. So they more than paid for it, but thats not the point really.

...btw any smokers out there, just bear in mind should you ever need chemotherapy, being a smoker (or even an ex smoker) screws your treatment right up :)

Had twuntface vine on the radio in the workshop earlier..... Some shopkeepers called up saying they have a small shop with a semi combined fag+sweets stand, and having to hide the fags would be a problem, even a box behind the counter would increase crime.

Then some douche from ASH claimed that pretty fag packets and stands in shops makes kids smoke....... erm **** off!!! and apparently 3/4 of smokers want to stop.

If that were true and actually happened, we would ALL be screwed as that £9.3Billion has to come from somewhere!

Lee

I can believe that to be fair. Everyone I know who smokes wants to stop, including myself.

Its sooooo good though :(

I wonder where that puts the shop I work for, as its Sainsburys but its not a supermarket its a convenience store and under 3000 square foot (which means it doesn't have to close at certain times on weekends etc)

Oh and smoking doesn't help keep you slim its all in your mind, last time I quit I lost weight, started again and gained weight.

Been smoking on and off since school too, sad thing is I do enjoy it especially when having a couple of pints (after a few though the smell of a smoky room/area makes me feel sick).

Need to quit though for health and financial reasons but I am addicted.

As long as I can still buy my cigs I ain't bother at all if there hidden or not, if they ban them then that's when I give a shiit.

Bring back pub tap rooms I say, I miss a beer and a cig whilst playing a game of pool, they all seemed to fit in nicely together. Pubs ain't pubs anymore without the smokey odors.

I will upset some here, but I think all those that can't quit have weak willpower.

I have tried tabs on more than one occasion. It wasn't unusual for me to smoke 2/3 on a night out when I was younger. I only tried them to see what all the fuss was about. It confirmed what I thought. They taste like sh!t and make your mouth taste like an ashtray - nowt worse than kissing a smoker!

They are fun to have with a few drinks though. lol. I haven't smoked any for years now. The point is though, I tried it - and not cos mates smoked etc that just made it easier to see what the big deal was - and I decided it's not for me, as I knew I would. I have never had any cravings. Or if i did I will have wrote them off as something else lol. Like when I ge heartburn. I don't call it that, and don't make a big deal out of it.

I agree with the smkong ban in public places, but I also think that as a democracy we shouldn't be forcing ideas on people. If you want to smoke then you should be allowed.

IMO If you wanna quit, man up and go cold turkey!

Southie
10-03-11, 12:05 AM
On that note Limp I'm off now for a cig and my last beer in the fridge before bed lol

I stopped for 8 months once and felt brilliant more awake, my sence of smell was better, my enthusiasum was better and I had money in my back pocket, sadly I started again because of a stag night by tapping a few cigs of my mates which then led to a 20 pack on the night and that was 10 years ago.

I've just had a friend die of cancer last month at the age of 33, she smoked 20 a day for ages and I'll be honest it scares the shiit out of me knowing how much tar and rat poison I've smoked over the years, a wake up call to say the least.

i agree here, i was a 20 a day smoker for just over 12 years, i decided i was going to stop, took the nessessery steps to prepare myself, and did it.

that was a year ago and tbh apart from the first few days i have had no cravings. when i see people smoking now, stood outside in the cold when its pissing it down i just pity them. Society has made smokers outcasts.

If the 2/3 of smokers quit who actually wanted to quit, could you imagine how much a litre of fuel would be then, they would have to find the lost revenue from somewhere, so the motorist would getted bummed even more.

Government don't want you using cannabis. So its illegal
Government don't want you using heroin. So its illegal
Government don't want you to rob a bank. So its illegal.
Government don't want you to smoke. So they tax it and make it difficult to get cigarettes.

Anyone spot the statement thats the odd one out? lol

Mind you, I suppose bank robbery is legal, the banks rob money whenever you go overdrawn lol

Lets face it,the current and previous government are the biggest thieves since Ronnie Biggs and co.
I still dont know why they dont legalise cannabis and sell that and tax that.
The amount of zoneheads in this country would soon turn the economy around before you could ask for some skins!!!
And lets be hones,as earlier stated, the NHS is already dealing with smoking related illnesses as they put cig's in reefers anyway so its all related and wouldnt put extra strain on at all.

Gaz1300SR
10-03-11, 08:05 AM
If only the government would get on with running the country rather than wasting time making up stupid laws. If they spent as much time worrying about drug dealers, people out on the rob and illegal immigrants as they do about drinkers, smokers and drivers going 5 miles an hour over the speed limit the country would be a far better place.

Also tastes like cardboard and really isn't the same....

I hate people who say they have weak willpower if they can't give up, different people react to it differently, some get completely dependant some don't. Some people find it easy to quit, others don't, such as myself, I seem to find if I smoke no stress appears, I quit for a day or two something really bad happens. And I slip back into the smoking vein again. What doesn't help is the fact my dad smokes :/ but I shall go again in a short while, only got two left lol

I do and don't agree with what you're saying there, everyone is different and has different tolerances to things like drugs/pain and other **** like that, I wouldn't say the people that cant quit are weak, I'd say their tolerance levels to addictive drugs are lower then yours, sounds a bit like an excuse but its how I see it.

I have quit smoking before and haven't had one yet today, but I'm craving yet as soon as I go and buy a packet I wont want one lol

Not a truer word said!!!!!

Like i said before, i really enjoyed smoking, it kept my weight down, but it got to the point where i couldn't justify spending almost £300 a month on them.
I went from 20-25 a day to nothing, i felt if i cut down i would never stop, none of this " i'll just have a box of 10 and a lighter in the cupboard JUST IN CASE "
I'd like to say it's the best thing i've ever done financially, food tastes better....so much better that i appear to be almost 1.5 stone heavier than i've ever been.
I have been tempted to start again because of this but Sturge would divorce me before we're even married!!!...:)

Anything is either fooking expensive cause your taxed to fook on it, or illegal lol

This crap is a fooking joke IMO far more important things to sort out like

- benefit coonts that have everything you have but never work
- half of eastern Europe coming to this country
- then claiming benefits for kids back home
- petrol prices taking the full piss
- stop letting the pricks in Brussels take the piss out of us with stupid laws

This country is royally fooked, Great Britain ? I don't think we can call it that anymore, sadly things will only get worse

My mother was taken off her incapacity benefit 5 yrs ago, she has osteoarthritis of the spine, and osteoporosis with a curvature, along with smashing 2 vertebrae 3 years ago, is unable to sit comfortable for any length of time.

edd, this country is screwed because of four things....

1. we were on the winning side in WWII, but were skint because of it.. the rest of europe got new industries, roads, rail & comms links... cos we'd bombed them out, we kept all of our old crap
2. labour wanted to get in power after WWII, they created the welfare state...
3. we basically sold the family silver to join the common market.
4. our heavy industries were uncompetitive due to massive union power, and underinvestment, yet our competitors have massive union power, but they actually invest in their industry.. using british banking loans...

mowgli
10-03-11, 11:43 PM
hoochie, i have a friend with 2 crushed vertebrae, he struggles with the sitting/standing thing. he regularly ends up in leicester for check ups, and he sees people pull into the carpark in some flash car, skip round to the boot, and get the zimmer out, then hobble into the waiting room... he has asked them to stick cameras up outside...

Edd

You can't blame WW2 for that crap that goes on nowadays

A government is meant to serve the people

As voters we were not asked

- if we wanted to join the EU and deal with all that crap
- wanted 1m Polish invading the country
- Muslim chaps flocking to this country to blow themselves up or crap like burning poppies

Sadly because the people are never consulted on important matters this fuels the strength of the likes of the BNP and EDL

The next thing will be a tax for being born in this country and being English

mowgli
11-03-11, 07:06 AM
edd, we only just paid off the debt to the yanks in time for the banking crisis, and we also had to give up our control of trade to the empire, which caused our income as a nation to drop massively.

we were actually asked about europe at every election, but most people simply vote for who their parents voted for, so most votes didn't count.

muslim terrorist deaths & victim totals in this country are so low compared to loads of other nations, fishing is more dangerous... should we ban it?

the poles are here because there are jobs, yet loads of british people don't think you should move house to find work...the bnp & edl will never get much political clout in this country because 1. the edl is a protest group filled with hooligans, nothing more (they were in hinckley last week), 2. the bnp have no real policies, and their leader couldn't run a bath unaided let alone a country.

All the problems started not long after WWII, As the old timer said, welfare was setup, we had industry but it was old and fecked then so not as good a value as yourope etc.... Every political party will say/do what it thinks is best to keep it in power, not necessarily the best way to run the country.

What I think is needed, is to have proper successful businessmen run the country and make the choices. UK plc is a company and needs to be run like one.... NOT like an estate agents lol
