View Full Version : Powerful small block XE's
Not a sentence you would expect to hear really lol
So who is building one? I see Dayle has a nicely specced one he is building for his Mrs' and Novafusion has one with them Dbilas throttle bodies (forget about those cheaters using turbo's and superchargers :p lol) what competition am I going to have lined up when mine is done (in a few years at this rate lol)

im a what lol
lmao
i read cheesegrater, then cheater lol
lol cheese grater, I thought I had done a Danny SPecial there lol
P.S I was joking about the turbo/SC 16XE's I'm interested in these too.
Phazer has one running Throttle bodies and DTA.
Throttle bodies, the one thing that would totally complete my engine with all the stuff I have/have planned for it.
Not sure I've seen phazer's build thread, has he got one?

There's some pictures of it here and other small block xe's
Ahh yes I remember it now, I want throttle bodies :(
Charles (CP) has a good specced smallblock 1600xe on here. I also believe it may soon see the light of day again as its almost ready to hit the black stuff. Engine was purchased still wrapped on a pallet from having been built and run in on an engine dyno, power is over 200bhp

theres a corsa rally car in the unit next to my work reckons they have spent £9000 on the engine and its on throttle bodys and has eight injectors saw it in action the other day didnt look that quick to be honest
jonlem's mate, the red mk1
very impressive car imo

Cant remember if I've seen that or not, I'm still in awe at CP's engine.

Can easily belive the £9k tbh.
Just looked at CP's thread and two words came to mind, one was Fu.ck the other was Me along with a few  and .
That is some pretty cool stuff, from the pics that are left.
It could have everything in the world but if its had some nugget map it, it will be slower than a 1.0.

No build thread unfortunately. When I get chance I plan on stripping the car and rebuilding with hopefully some additonal engine mods (it's essentially a standard x16xe with bodies and DTA, exhaust manifold is even standard lol still made 147bhp though) so will deffo do one then.
If you need/want pics of anything just shout.

147 BHP and is pretty much standard? It has potential and lots of it.
I'll have a look for toymex's thread, cheers Dean.

Yep, power still climbing at the 7750 rev limit. The guy that mapped it a Noble said it was being held back by the ex. manifold. I'd like to do more but then it drives so well and is a lot of fun I'd be wary of changing the characteristics so much as it's bang on for what I want.
Velos built it well
Im following in your foot steps of using the velos torque tube and dta. hope it goes well.... just started to build the bottom end up today untill the problems with the rod bolts. .5 overbore with new pistons crank bearings and mains hopefully will build me a reliable engine.

i know of a garage in Crewe, Cheshire that have a Nova rally car
used to have a 1.4 corsa sport engine in pushing around 160ish bhp
but that was about this time last year
who knows what they've got in that now :)

What pistons are you using with your set up?
dhdev olly's nova used to be my fav small block, such a cool little car, then got broken for parts :(

Be interesting to keep an eye on this thread - think smallblock is the way to go at the moment, planning on running one in my next project.
What are they like in general for reliability when compared to the big blocks?
im rebuilding my c16xe after oil relief jammed open on rollers:S
specs:
omega hi-comp pistons
steel rods
balanced crank
lightened gte flywheel
helix clutch
steel inner/outer pump gears
insert to convert tensioner to solid roller
head:
ported c16 head
bowyer steel spring platforms
catcams 'gold' springs capable of about 14-15mm lift!
bowyer steel caps
own profile newman cams(hydrualic profile still)
kent verniers
modified original belt rollers
R1 carbs
SBD ex manifold and alunox 2.25 twin box system.
hoping to see around 190bhp or so.

Im running a lower spec. than most mentioned on here but still should see 100-per-litre or 200bhp-per-ton from a 1.8 small block Z18XE:

I have to tell you about lee303 on migweb's 1.8 small block build also; his is the daddy of power within these close vauxhall circles.

Nice, I'll have to have a look on mig for lee303's car.
Philip, looks like a decent engine you've got there.
Technically mine is a small block? lol
Technically mine is a small block? lol
Yeah but I'm asking about powerful small blocks not death-barges lol
There's a few on MIG - Lee303, GaryVaux, Mike ITB and Warren-G.

Peester what is the microwave grille attached to your firewall?
Ahem. Off topic but hey. It might be horse-power gaining..
It is an ally vent from a household store on ebay but...
Tweeks sell them for triple the price..
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Search.do?method=delegate&n=1687&g=6310&s=OBPLOA3
Its just so the ITB's are drawing some/more cooler air from behind the firewall through the vent - im sure some colder/outside air finds its way into that area as leaves and other stuff manages too..
Plus thats the same area where my air temp sensor is so the ITB's have a better chance of getting that same actual air.
Its more function over form: ide have loved to have had pressed or nicely drilled louvres/holes in the firewall but realistically this was the best i could achieve.
Philip, looks like a decent engine you've got there.
fingers crossed it will be second time around, wasnt happy after spending £450 on rods, balancing etc to have the relief jam...ahwel lesson learned, so mech guage fitted now. lol. if saw near 200bhp id be more than pleased. 210 id say is about limit on wet sump imho
What about an acusump Philip?

I still have the powerful smallblock bit of it though :( 193bhp and sounded like this on the rollers :cool::cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hhGbXzi8Q4
PM me if anyone actually wants to buy it! ;)

I've advertised it a couple of times, but just get time wasters. Plus with me being at uni and the engine stored over 100miles away, its a bit inconvenient having to travel back just so that someone can poke at it and tell me that they don't have the money just yet...:wtf:
