View Full Version : Aluminium trolley jacks
Anyone got an aluminium low-entry trolley jack? Quite fancy one as my little steel one no longer fits under the front chassis leg. I've done some research and the Clarke one appears to be the best combo of price/weight/lift?

Any other recommendations?

i have that one and seems many others do too (see them often in build thread pics)
Mines 4 yrs old, lots of abuse - cant recommend enough.
However, managed to buy from argos back then at £80ish all in..

Get one from Costco, they are only about £90 and I am sure they are 2.5 ton
cheaper in costco if you have an account?
Do the Derby Costco branch stock them? What make are they there (so I can do some research on them)?
Don't have an account but know someone with a card

Derby have them, I got mine from there a couple of months ago.
I will try and get a pic of it for you. I think its an American one so you may not find it anywhere else over here.
You ought to see the tool boxes they have in at the moment. They have a Snap-On style roll cab thats about 6 foot wide with the wood top and its only about £400 odd! Snap-On would ask £4k for it!

I'd sooner use Spuds cock to jack a car up than one of those... If you only use them in a smooth floored garage then yeah they are 'ok', but if you rattle them about the bolts all shake loose and they fall apart :(
I have one of those huge ass costco jacks and its great, can even leave it outside for a year and its still 100% fine lol I think they are about £150 on most websites and about £80 in costco

Used to use a Snap-on one where I used to work, bloody awesome things. Can pick it up and carry it around really easily as it didn't weigh anything, yet lifted more weight with less effort than "regular" jacks of the same size.

Yeah? Cool, that an aluminium one Stuart? Assume they're lots lighter than steel ones
Mines an Ally one, but it still weighs 25Kg lol
lol OK, another reason I liked the look of the Clarke one is cos it's supposedly 11kg
yeah they are very light, but they arent made very well :( some folks I know strip them down and rebuild with the strongest thread lock available to try and make them last a bit longer

This is the Costco one. The pad height is 88mm from the floor when lowered.

Also with Costco, if it breaks they give you your money back. No questions asked.
My missus broke the Dyson we had from there. I took it back and they gave me my money back in cash. Went back into the store and bought a new one and because they were on offer I was £20 better off!

BTW the jack is very well built. It may be slightly heavier than a Clarke one but I would rather have strength than light weight.

Thick frame side plates and reinforced lift area
Side mounted handles
12 pumps to the top under load
Bypass and overload valves
Ball bearing mounted rear swivel caster wheels
2 piece handle for easy storage
Rubber saddle pad and foam bumper pad
Dual return springs
Low lift height 3.5"
High life height 19.25"
Overall length 26.5"
Over width 13"
Overall height at pump 6.5"
Handle height 50"
that jack will lift enough to nearly put a nova on its side ;) Paul used mine at Coooooombe a few years back to get an inner CV joint out
488mm lift and only 88mm entry height sounds like a winner, I need to borrow a Costco card! Nice one for your help

Wish mine still looked like that! lol
I have had one of these Arcan ones for over 4 years now and it has seen a lot of graft. Aside from having to tighten the allen bolts up and change the oil it has been no problem at all. Best jack I have ever used, and it cost me over £250. Then a couple of years later Costco got them in. lol
You won't find better for the price they are now. Even if they were 3 times the price tbh.

Exactly what happened to mine years ago, and would never buy another one TBH.
I've got a weber Jack, Its about 20 year old and was stolen 8 year ago when I was at college.
It's a friggin monster weights a ton, won't fit under low low cars but Its like family now and It's seen a lot of work... I think its due retirement in another 5 years. :(
My trolly jack weights a fricken tonne :( its an ex RAC one, super duper high lift thing. A proper garage type jack like.

No, just for one night only!
"what do you call a man with a car on his head?"
lol
I have a halfords 2.5 tonne thing. It's near enough fooking useless, build quality makes the nova look good, and it instills about as much confidence as a widowmaker with a wonky leg lol It also struggles to get under a nova which is lowered 40mm on my sloped drive lol

Why. We all have the same one. lol
FYI, Costco in Gateshead and Bristol don't have any jacks atm. They used to stock the alloy 2.5T and the steel 3T. I went for a new one today. :(
What were you doing all the way down here and why didnt you tell me, could have sorted that interior :p

No interior available this time either. lol

lol He provided about 3 sets of rear seats btw.

i wouldnt recoment one, my mate had a brand new sealy one on his lowerd golf vr6, and you have to jack them on very very even ground otherwise they will flop, my friend jacked the vr6 up by the front chassis leg and was messing about adjusting the coilovers and the jack just bent sideways and fell over and the car landed on its disk and wreched the front bumper ect. there not very strong.

Wouldn't even think of jacking a car up unless the ground was flat. Also you should never rely solely upon a jack, axle stands should always be used when working under a car. You will always run the risk if you don't. I think your mate is a bit stupid to be honest.
Also these jacks are not cheap ones, they are extremely well built and not your cheap Machine Mart 'showy' Anodised jacks
Been to Costco today and they have 15 on the shelf....

A tenner!
Nice to meet you today and thanks for your help.

Glad to see you have seen the error of your potential ways. Those Clarke things with the rollers are horrid!
Rexy, I don't want/need a 'proper' workshop jack when my lightweight alloy one will do more than they ever could and much quicker (except a truck jack).
I wonder if my Costco can order one in from another branch.

I bought a "aluminium" jack off eBay a few years back. I think the only ally things ally on it were the side, the rest of it was bloody heavy iron! It was pants though, and didn't last long.
Those Costco jobs look pretty good for light use.
I have an ARCO/Pace "double-down" jack in the workshop. Two pumps gets my ASCAR in the air (one side) Four pumps for full lift (18"). A little more expensive than the Costco jack, but even with the steel handle, it weighs 32lb.
god knows what my jack is...it weighs a ton, but after 4 years its still going strong
