if you have a car, it must be insured, what about all the trailer queens, going to have to class them as scrap so not to have a log book ?

Jack

Where the hell did you get that one from?

You sure you're not misinterpreting the "taxed car needs insurance" thing, which 90% of The Internet seems to be doing? lol

General Baxter

some ****ing toff was just on the radio 1 news

'if you dont, we will hit you with a £100 fine, if you still dont we will take you to cort and take the car' lol

General Baxter

The new law will make it an offence to be the registered keeper of an uninsured car, whether or not the vehicle is being used and regardless of whether it has a valid tax disc or is kept on private property.

lol

There's your problem

[edit] Now go look up what the regulations actually state lol

Radio 1 news isn't news, it'd be like trying to use the Sun for stock market financial guidance lol

LOL I googled your quote.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/6195021/Owners-of-uninsured-cars-face-new-fines-under-new-Government-curbs.html

...is the original source, and funnily enough its been directly copy/pasted all over the shop. Note the date the article was written, and also note this:

The only way to avoid a fine will be to go through the bureaucratic process of making a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
Another surprising case of "Internet misinterprets law" again lol

[edit] Actually, reading some of the blurb on the subject (as in, the government reports, not misrepresented "news" reports or forum hearsay), there's some interesting hints as to the future of motor insurance. They've looked at insure-the-car-not-the-driver policies and stamped on that idea, and also want to do away with drive-any-car options too

Yes so if your insurance runs out and you have 4 months tax left you will need to reinsure or cash the tax in and sorn the car,

The sorn means no insurance required.

Yeah. If the insurance expires you either need to re-insure or SORN the car. Only difference to previous was the wording of the law stated you needed insurance only to purchase the VED.

I think to complement this they should change the way VED works (or at least, how its bought). As otherwise it completely defuncts the point of temp insurance. Especially since if you buy 6 months tax, run the car on a temp policy for a few days, then cash the VED back in you basically lose a month (possibly two if its done at the wrong time of month afaik) of the tax.

The government has been recommended to implement an online solution where people can buy VED and insurance all in one hit at the click of a button, but I can't see that happening for many a year if at all. In fact, IMO they should simply scrap VED and have it included as part of insurance payments. So if you buy temp insurance for, say, 3 days, you're only buying 3 days worth of VED; if you cancel the policy 4 months in, your 8 month refund includes a refund of 8 months VED.... etc. But I guess thats FAR too sensible lol

Such is modern policing, instead of actually proving (or catching) someone is breaking the law, its a lot easier to sit there and compare two databases, then mailshot everyone who flags up as having tax but no insurance.

They should make it that you can tax it without insurance as it's a ******* waiting on the cover note.

Jack

Tax it online or ask them to email you the cover note :d

F@ckin England sucks for motor enthusiasts.

If it becomes a major problem, I'll register my Fiesta with my uncle in France.

radio 5 live had a piece on this story today, so when you consider bbc news is renowned for checking things, there might be something in it..

they said that car owners should expect a letter in the next few weeks...

so basically if you own a car, you're going to get f***ed every which way in the @ss so they can squeeze money out of you whilst hiking up the price of everything else including petrol and not bothering with the wages, oh isnt england fun!!

I heard they were bringing in a separate version of sorn to cover if a car is not insured

Adam
03-03-11, 09:08 PM
Sorn is staying the same.

Basically, you cant have a car sitting taxed thats not insured.
So you take your insurance off the car (swap it to a new one or whatever), youve got to remove the tax too and SORN it.

Andy
03-03-11, 09:09 PM
And just how will they know it isnt insured if its out of sight in your garage???

Adam
03-03-11, 09:10 PM
That little thing known as the Motor insurance database lol

They have that and just compare it to the dvla tax records.....

Find one thats not insured, but is taxed, bang. Letter/fine whatever on your way
Simples

computer.......

its a bit like the infamous tv licence detector van. all they had was 2 bench seats & some curtains... and they had a list of houses down each street that had a tv licence.. so they would drop a bloke of on each street in an area & send them door knocking people who weren't on the list....

the dvla will check all registered cars against the insurance, mot & tax databases & then chase people up.. uninsured cars is actually a huge problem in the uk.. loads of anpr cameras are appearing round all our local council estates.....

So they wont even go by it in the street say for example, they will just randomly choose to check some reg plate??
Why the fukk does it need to be insured if its in a garage on axle stands ffs with 3 weeks worth of tax left on for example?!!
What a fukkin shytehole we live in!!!!

Because some people will get insurance on a monthly basis and then cancel it once they have tax, then proceed to drive round while retaining the covernote should the police pull them....

If you have the car in a garage with no wheels on then cashing the tax in/sorning properly isnt a huge issue that you are making it out to be.

We all love to hate "the man" but 9/10 times 'the man' isnt acutally ****ing the man on the street over, just the scumbags that take the piss out of the system

Adam
03-03-11, 09:22 PM
It wont be a random thing, afterall its a pc system. Think how many reg's it could check per second...........

You can declare sorn online in seconds, its hardly a big issue.

well when i was running two cars,

id use one for a month then swap the insurance over and play with the other for a month,

like **** would i be swaping and changing tax over aswell

Jack
03-03-11, 10:57 PM
VED/SORN can be done online in seconds as said, so its no biggie to swap that over as well although granted you'd lose cash if you were doing it regularly (as in every few weeks). In fact it would probably take longer to jiggle the insurance round! Also remember its no longer an offence to drive without displaying a tax disc, as long as your online application has been completed.

TBH though it is a bit of a mickey mouse law. The people who buy VED with temp/cancelled insurance, they're not going to say "oh ok I'll stop doing that now", they'll say "well sod the VED as well then". Its a bit like all the restrictions on number plates, so people just get show plates if they want to clone a reg. At the end of the day though, the VED system is archaic and like using a model T in the Daytona 500 lol

I'm sure I read somewhere that ANPR can't automatically check the MID records (only pings up either marked cars or those without MOT/VED), it needs a police request to get that data... could be wrong though.

I too read something like that, and when i looked into it, I found out all ANPR systems automatically check the insurance docs,

"vehicles not on the MID will be flagged to the police as potentially being uninsured. Therefore, there is likelihood that they will be stopped by the police if they pass an ANPR camera and potentially they could have their vehicle impounded if they can’t provide proof of insurance at that time."

Insert insider knowledge....

If you have had any sec 59, sec 165's etc... that will ping up on ANPR (Thats sec 59's linked to YOU not the car)
If you have had your car stolen and/or recovered at anypoint..that will ping up on ANPR
If your veh has been in an accident and left at the roadside for a few days... it will ping up on ANPR
If your Mot has expired.. that will ping up on ANPR
Basically, if you have had anysort of run in with the law good or bad and have a report on your veh, it will prob ping up on ANPR
It will ping if "no insurance held" on your record but some insurance companies dont sign up to ANPR so it might no necessarily mean you dont have insurance so you might not get pulled.

It wont ping if your VEL has run out or not held tho... thats DVLA's problem not ours.
