Had a boys weekend away spectating, good times. Some really nice stuff out. Bertie won, and a former co-driver of mine finished second overall in a WRC Scoob.

A lovely old Kadett was going well, as was an oddball RWD Calibra, with what sounded like a snorty V6 under the bonnet.

Also followed a nice red Nova out spectating: red Merit on black Compos, private plate and png sticker. Looked and went well. Anyone here?

No mate, although one of the boys was snap happy with the camera as he had never seen a rally car before: watching Andy Burton at full chat opened his eyes a bit! I'll see if I get him to mail some pics over.

Blast from the past, yes and always went to Harewood House in the later years. Just wish I had pictures of those times, I use to go along with my dad who worked at Vauxhall in the 80's and we got aloud into the service areas, sad really that I've forgotten what I saw at the time.

That'd be me :d

Dragged the old girl out of hibernation a couple of weeks ago and stuck the comps on on Friday. In need of a damn good polish and the odd niggly bit sorting but she's not too bad! Whereabouts did you see us? The 1.2 was struggling a bit on the hills 4 up lol

The RWD Calibra was kicking out some amount of smoke on the last stage, not looked to see if it made it to the end or not yet but was still going well.

Will try get some pics up sometime this week once I've sorted them out

Followed you to Grizedale (and we couldn't keep up!) and then parked behind you at Wythop. Blue BMW Alpina.

Would be good to see some pics :)

Just uploading the pics now

this new stuff is all well & good, but everyone still wants to see the old rwd stuff. if only the msa & fia could do what they looked at in the early nineties... a 2.0 16v rwd class using modern model bodyshells.... then rallying would be as popular as it should be.

It's a home built thoroughbred rally car, cosworth (DTM iirc) engine in the back, spaceframe chassis and 306 kit car body. Been around for years, one of the fastest cars in club rallying. Not bad for a chicken farmer

/\ and soon to be banned from national rallying.....:(

Sonny Jim
08-03-11, 03:20 PM
why's that ?

mowgli
08-03-11, 03:23 PM
because the people allegedly running the MSA think that having stuff like this, that the fans love, is bad for the marketing aspect of the rally & want shiny group n imprezzas & evos that don't exactly look spectacular.

I'd heard that msa were on about doing like for like rally cars only, basically ford engines in fords, Vauxhall engines in Vauxhalls and so on, so no cross breading.

Cracking pictures Sturge ;)

but vauxhalls don't even have vauxhall engines these days.....

Yes they are looking at changing the rules with the engines so you can no longer put a Vauxhall engine in a mk2 escort etc. They are also looking at making it so you can't say change a car that was born with a 1600 to a 2.0. They will slowly kill our sport off the price of competing nowadays is horrendous.

When I lived at home with my mum and dad I competed in 24 rallys in 2007 now I'm lucky if I manage to get out for 6 a year. Thankfully im out in 2 weeks time on the 20th of March at Weston Park, that should be good as its limited to only 2 wheel drive cars too and we always seem to go well there.

It will be a shame to see cars like Andy Burton's car gone. Its to do with homologation and safety apparently as they haven't been crash tested etc etc.

so andy burtons car hasn't passed a crash test?? i've got a feeling that a wrc is so far removed from a road car, considering that they build the car & shell from pretty much single panels, that it isn't comparable with a road car either.....

as for the engine thing... a bda is ludicrous money for the same hp as a good redtop or zetec, so it is a clever idea to use different engines..

as for the 'can't change the cc' bit, what about all the wrc cars?

mk1nova_rich
08-03-11, 05:58 PM
And Novas will have to go back to using 8 valves...

Which means the end for super competitive cars such as Julian Wilkes 1400 16v Nova

Bubba

and so ends another great motorsport...

Works cars are different As they are built like that from the factory and are homologated to a group standard. They have to build x number of cars to the same spec and homologation papers are issued with the class group i.e group a group n group b.

They are trying to make it so everyone’s buzzing around in a group A or N Subaru’s. Andy Burtons car is different as its a 1 off how many other space framed rear engined 4 wheel drive Peugeot 306's came from the factory like that??? That’s what they are trying to ban same as the engine swaps in cars.

Another crazy rule that was implemented this year is mud flaps. Your car needs to have mud flaps on every corner of the car, even if its a 70bhp front wheel drive Nova. They have to be made to specific dimensions and be at least 4mm thick. Scruitineers this year are checking that your mud flaps are to a certain dimension and that you also are carrying the new spill kit that that is mandatory rather then checking important parts, seats bolts in correctly, fire extinguishers and in date and the engine cut outs work.
