Has anyone got pictures of the brackets they have welded onto the shell for the sump guard to mount onto??

Or just any general info would be much appreciated :thumb:

Probably not of help, but when I was building MG rally cars we used to drill through the front crossmember each side and weld a nut to this. Then the same was done again to the chassis rails.

The sump guard was then lifted up to these, loctite applied to the bolts and they were done up then Torque'd up accordingly.

I appreciate the help but the Nova engine sits quite a bit lower than the bottom of the crossmember so it can't be flat, I already have a sump guard but it slopes up at the front so the brackets need to be angled. I saw a Nova in the service area at Croft which looked to have a similar setup to what I need but sods law I didn't have my camera with me :(

Thats a bit more helpful Mike, cheers. Its more for determining the level the sump guard wants to sit at as I don't have an engine in to gauge it....

Got your pm rich, my sump guard was the same one as mike's put up here, i don't have any pics unfortunately, the front mounts on the shell use the bolts that hold the tie rods on with the slope part facing back towards the engine. At the rear of the sump guard the brackets fitted around the bottom arm and you had to re-drill the bottom arm holes back in the steel once they were all welded in place.

Hope this helps :thumb:

Is it the front brackets or rears you are trying to make?

The fronts will be easy but the back ones are fairly fancylol

Both actually, I've been looking at one of these lower braces that bolt between the TCA mounts...then securing the sump guard to that somehow

Just looked at that build guide for you and theres nothing on there, if your fabricating them yourself make them quick-ish release as mine were a pain in the ass to remove in a hurry lol

not sure them HH ones will work, my sump guard is narrower than the gap between the tie bar brackets

It should be wider than the gap between the tie bar brackets so it protects them aswell as the sump :thumb:

Also if its wider than the tie bars it will be easier to mount at the rear using the bottom arm mounting location.

so is mine as far as i can remember :)

i have allmost identical brackets you need to make a backing plate with captive nuts that slide into the cross member, drill a couple of holes to suit and bolt them on, then possition your guard and make and drill holes to mount the guard to the brackets.

never had and problems attaching to the cross member and believe me i have had some big hits on my guard :d

mk1nova_rich

I've bought it now lol so I'll just have to work with what I've got :d

Cheers for that Jonn, don't suppose you could measure the distance between the TCA bolt and the sump guard?! To make sure I get enough clearance under the engine...

OK here are the photos of my sump guard it's not on the car but I hope it helps you

In the first two pic's is the front mounting bracket which is just bolted to the front tie bar mount by the two bolts and is in a T shape the top of the T is where it mounts to the tie bar and then the leg coming down has a hole in it for the guard.

That is exactly the same one i had on my rally car, it weighs a bloody tone lol Yer it dose that. But it's had a hard life, was used for off road event's before I got it so it's a bit bent up now. But good kit :thumb:

Is the guard for a rally car and if so for tarmac or loose surface use ?

mk1nova_rich
01-03-11, 08:08 PM
road rally car but will also use it for marshalling. So only light to medium use, with occasional rough surface

phunkynova
01-03-11, 08:19 PM
So you maybe be doing some yumping on them road rally's if you make a bracket like Jonns it will bend on the first heavy landing. If you look at my photo's you will see a block at the back of the guard this sits under the rear gear box/engine mount and adds extra strength and support to the guard. If you look you will also see my brackets are buckled and bent they will take a lot of s**t so don't make them weak or it's you engine sump next. No offense meant Jonn.

well I've won those Harry Hockly brackets that were on ebay so that should be the front sorted. Thanks for the link, I wouldn't have seen them otherwise :) when they arrive I can have a play about with mounting it
