View Full Version : Ebay selling p&p costs rant

Adam

Aint listed anything on ebay for a while so im just sticking some old dvds on there.
And suddenly im greeted with some "Max P&P" box.

The max postage you can charge for a dvd is £1.
If ebay can buy a jiffy envelope, and post a 3dvd boxset for £1 1st class delivery, then i dont know what postal service they are using!

Rant over

Plus fuel to get to post office.

Don't like it don't use it, pretty simple hairball.

T45_Ste- Exactly.

And you can even put in any kind of "custom" postage rate.

Jack

You just have to start the bidding at a higher minimum price - which of course earns ebay more revenue lol

tbh you can generally assume that people will pay what they value it at, including p&p, so it shouldn't make any great odds except when listing at 99p start with postage covered, where you might lose out. Solution is as jack says.

Adam

Say you sell something for a fiver though, thats worth a fiver.
They then expect you to post it for 99p, when its easy going to cost £2+

Ok, not huge money but it add's up when selling multiple things!

I'm not gonna pay £7 for something that's only worth £5 to me, posted or not lol Maybe others think differently? Same way I wouldn't pay £35 for it just because it's in America or something lol

Adam

Eh?

Postage cost is always extra?
If its worth a fiver, and it costs a fiver, then you pay a fiver, plus P&P  ?
Lol

Lol

I factor it into the price I pay for something tbh, if I can collect i'll pay £30 for it, if it has to be posted I'll not pay more than £30 posted if that's the value I put on it.

Its BS i recnetly sold all 6 boxsets of lost.
£1 postage is a fukkin joke.
I keep getting "Tell us what you think about ebay" questionnaires etc and i just fill it full of my anger at how fukking shyte the site has become and how its overrun with gutter snakes as members

No I just won't bid up to £5 and then pay postage if the most I'm going to pay for an item is £5? if postage cost £4 I'd bid a quid for it, if it was free I'd bid £5?

Jack

what really annoys me is the parts ads that have £20 p&p for an item that will only cost a tenner to send, and they absolutely won't allow collection. a bloke in hinckley was doing that a while back, but wouldn't allow me to go round for the bits.

Thats the idea of this new ebay thing, so you only pay the postage that ebay think it will cost.
Its a joke for sellers tbh!
Of course a lot better for buyers, doing honest sellers out of money as well as on the pathetic fee's ebay and paypal charge lol

Send it 3rd class by donkey, 2 weeks after the item ends then lol

So you got free fuel or sumat?! If postage is reasonable then it can often work out cheaper than having to collect, unless its literally just around the corner

Then get bummed by someone like me who is unhappy with your p!ss taking and then files a Paypal dispute claiming the item never arrived! lol

I wouldn't sell DVD's on there for this very reason. You could always ask more for them, and put in the description the reasons why. if people browsing even get that far that is! They will most likely just buy from some other seller that doesn't know the score.

Like those that sell a Haynes manual for 99p and think it costs 99p to post. Fail!

Oh yeah, no matter what it is. ALWAYS send it recorded IMO.

mk1nova_rich

You could always choose a different category when listing them to get round the postage cap...

Jack
28-02-11, 07:52 AM
But then if there's loads of that item for sale, people might sort by category and miss your item. Especially now ebay search is useless at finding what you actually want!

Oh yeah, no matter what it is. ALWAYS send it recorded IMO.
Give buyer the option of recorded IMO, then if it goes walkies its their problem. So long as you get proof of postage (which everyone does for ebay stuff, right?) they have no comeback. Guarantee they'll never take it though - in xyz years of selling on ebay, I've never once had anyone take a "premium" postage option, they always go for the cheapest.

I wouldn't make a blind bit of difference if you gave the option to have it recorded and added a message to the listing that said...

"if you choose not to use the recorded postage you do so entirely at your own risk I take no responsibility for any item lost during shipping and buy using the standard post option you are legally agreeing to this!"

Because when it doesn't arrive and the buyer files a claim Ebay will ask for the tracking number and if you don't supply it, even quoting what you wrote in the listing they will refund.

ALL ITEMS MUST BE SENT VIA A TRACKED SERVICE.

P&P is the single most complained about thing on eBay. Ever.

Theres currently some nova mirrors on there for sale, with a massive £15 postage Flol lol lol

I always send stuff first class recorded. Even non ebay stuff. Covers me and the buyer.

I normally weigh stuff and get a price off the RM website. Does fukk me off though when in certain categories there is a limit for P+P prices. WTF??

Not in my experience. I had an item go awry in the post aaaaagges ago (my old standard celica rear lights) and ebay sided with me. I just said that my listing made it clear the max compensation available was £35 or whatever it was with RM, and as the buyer didn't opt for the insured option (as I offered either standard, recorded or specialé delivery)... it wasn't my fault his item got lost, etc. Provided a copy of the postage receipt, made the postage claim, refunded the guy the claim amount and that was that.

That was a few years ago mind, so I guess they may have gotten lazy/more difficult in the meantime lol

I normally take in to acount that the bubble wrap i use is not free and getting big enough card board box's is a pain the rectum lol

And when you send large items the delivery firms add all the measurements of your box to charge you a weight which is not even reasnable, e.g a massive empty box will equate to some stupid weight like 30kg!!!!!!!

Adam
28-02-11, 08:09 PM
The items i had on there have now sold for pathetic amounts, so ebay have well and truely scammed another seller

Im actually out of pocket on most of them.........

Ive have never ever in my life paid for any bubble wrap (in efffect I have, but not an outright purchase of xxx metres of it) lol and Ive got mountains of the bloody stuff!!

I ALWAYS keep & re-use box's from previous parcels I've ordered & keep any bubble wrap that anything I order arrives in, thus giving me instant wrapping material & box's for nearly any occasion :thumb:

BUT I buy & sell a hell of lot, both on eBay & privatly across a couple of different forums, owners clubs & car clubs.

With regards to you paying over the odds for couriers, your definetly using the wrong place then!! senditnow.com @ £11.99 for a 3 working day service upto 25kg (IIRC?)

I think what some people dont realise is, its a farking auction! Nothing but a mere gamble that what your selling is gonna A) make profit (if thats your goal?) and 2) actually sell!

Some you win, some you just outright loose I'm afraid.

Send it now is no good for me matey as you are regulated yet again by the size's, if i was sending small item's it would be okay :thumb:

As i send more than i recieve i have to buy bubble wrap, unless you fancy sending me a box full lol

Indeed, since they took away the ability to leave buyers negative feedback it has been all about the buyer. Ebay doesn't give a monkey about sellers. :(

I had to spend 11 quid on a roll of bubble wrap the other week at Staples. Gutted is not the word!

Good job i ripped Fritz off to the tune of £43 to send coilovers to Germany. Cost me £17. lol

I hate keeping too many packing materials, but once I bin then, I inevitably need them! Still have half the roll left though. :)

I always keep ALL packaging from everything I buy on Jewbay.
Then send out stuff I sell with the recycled wrap.
I paid for it comin in, so im using it going out. ;)

I used to have a £50-60 packaging bill a week when selling on ebay, there is no way i could hoard enough packaging to cover things.

Ebay is an out and out joke as Mark said its all geared up for the buyer and not in the slightest about the seller even though its the seller that keeps ebay earning!

and MK999 that would be why you offered me less for an item than it would cost me to post lol

Ebay fees and packing regs are a joke, ano its harsh on other bidders, but why not just try a PM to the seller of whatever your after to get them to cancel the listing early for cash on collect.

If it wasnt so extortione, id have my shed on the road by now!
Grrrr!

Which is a fukkin joke seen as how its sellers that make them their money!:tard:
Not been able to neg buyers takes the piss.
What if you were selling an item and a buyer turned up with all his mates smoking reefers and drinking cans of lager then had a crap in your garden?
Am i supposed to leave a positive for that?!!

The biggest laugh about it is if the buyer said,"nah get out and fukk off, dont dare come round here again etc."
Theres nowt to stop the buyer leaving a negative saying "Turned up and seller didnt want to part with the item, messer"
Crazy!!!!
Or a more likely story, buyer fails to turn up when arranged or doesnt pay.
To me that deserves a negative.
Ebay think its okay and we will give them another chance to do it again, and again in some people ive dealt with

Once I was selling some TSW alloys, a bloke won the bidding and wantd to collect, I asked him when he would like to collect and had it all arranged, then half hour before he emailed saying he cant make it for another few hours and when can he come next

Stupidly I told him I was out all afternoon but the next day was ok, that same day I came home and found my wheels, both old and new had been stolen, I contacted ebay for his details and they refuesed to give them, had to get the cops in, but they never found him, I then called ebay, which is a right pain in the ass to get their number, and some bitd said as I was not the buyer I am entitled to nothing, not even negative fredback!

What a pisser!

Sold a car on eBay. Knobhead messed me about, said he was coming, yada yada yada....no show. I left feedback (positive, obviously  ) but used ** and CAPS..he left me neg feedback saying the car was a rotter and I was a messer. Cock!

I have since been wary and do not leave feedback until i get good feedback.

drop an email to ebay and ask them to remove it, I once had someone say I had scammed them out of the item before I even got home to check who had won it! lo and behold he left feedback saying it had never turned up a week or so later, email to ebay with proof of postage and they removed it. If it genuinely was lost (which I doubt tbh) I would have chased the post office for a refund (it was under the standard £36 coverage) but since he was a cock I just told him to get fcuked.
