im sorry this will be a bit long but here goes! i took my car to a garage that dad in law suggested as my nova was driving really crappy and choking so i asked this guy to have a look. well that was 4 days ago and now it will not drive only idle. the man is very rude to me and said that he has fixed all the problems i caused in the engine even though i havent touched it. he reckons my timing was out and he fixed that but the tension was too tight and now my water pump is leaking so has to fix that but he definately thinks the problem is the weber carb as im not getting any petrol through the main jetter! only when i spray petrol into the carb the car will run tidy. the man has told me my car is a shed and as i cant drive it away from there i dont really know what to do?? shall i just get a pierburg and see if that works?? thanks for looking:thumb:

the weber should be fine mate and should run alot better than the pierbburg aslong as there is no air leeks ect . the guy sounds like a tit to me , you d get these people / modern day mechanics that seem to be totaly against retro cars / carbs ect . try find a garage with someone that knows about webers ect and you car should be fine mate.

As above really, take it to a garage that specialises in older cars / knows how to set up Carbs.

if the cam timing was out, for what it costs, a new water pump & cam belt are worth fitting.... and if a carb jet isn't working, it needs a strip down & clean. both jobs are fairly easy for a diy'er to do... most garages charge tons to work on an old car, cos they are way more trouble to make money on, compared to putting a cambelt kit on a mondeo etc.....

but this is what im worried about as he says he has stripped the carb down! he aint changed the timing belt or new water pump yet he is going to charge me for 10 hours work!! im too scared to strip the carb myself as im not sure about it but if he did strip the carb why is it blocked now? im just gutted i took my car there running now i got to get it towed home and pay for nothing

10 hours??? for a carb car?? now that is cobblers....

1.2 novas usually have dizzy & ign timing problems..

if it needed a head off, you'll only be talking 3hrs for the job, but if he stripped the carb & it doesn't work, then its a job for trading standards

Hmmm.... sounds like a joker to me. I wouldn't want to pay for someone to balls my car up! However, it's never that easy when they have your car.

I would certainly argue the point though, you took in a running car and he has effectively made it a non runner.

sounds to me like he has made your car worse than it already was and is now making out that its your fault so he can still charge you . and as said about the time scale even a full rebuild on one of these motor would only take about 10 hours . some garages make me sick how they seem to think they can just pull prices out of there arses thus the reason i never use them .

You say that as a joke, when I was pit-crew for part of the classic MG race series, when one of the B GT's came in with a mis-fire one of the apprentice lads came running over with the laptop and cables...

Is there a thread on here anywhere recommending local garages? Maybe a name and shame thread too.
