View Full Version : Full lock wheel contact

Am I right in thinking it's common for the LH wheel to hit the gearbox on full RH lock (20XE, F20, solid mounts)? What is usually done to overcome this?

My RH wheel also scrubs the tiebar on full LH lock, are they usually quite close anyway and getting the tracking sorted will resolve it?

For the MOT I suppose wheel spacers may be a good idea so there's lots of clearance?

Never heard of hitting the tie bar tbh

But gearbox is common, I had a spacer to put on come MOT time as mine rubbed

Sounds like your tracking is out aye.

And what size tyres? If 195/50s then they will be causing problems due to the "fat-ness"
ET49 wheels dont help things either.

3mil spacers didnt help mine much, so for mot i had to set the tracking a mile out (toe out), so the wheels were pretty much / \ lol
To stop the inner edges touching the box/my oil cooler pipes.

I remember your issues Adam, thought you'd fixed it with spacers tho grr

I've set the tracking "by eye" and they look straight ish but its still scrubbing the box and tiebar. Not heard of tiebar contact either Edd but maybe it's a mix of eccentric topmounts/lowered tiebar brackets causing this?

I have loads of thread left on the wheel studs so shall I just go for some chunky spacers? 5-7mm?

195/45R15 tyres btw!

Big spacers will help.
Just seen your pics, fook me, thats not rubbing its like jammed proper against the tie bar.

Mine wasnt as bad as that, and ive even got my oil cooler pipes running along the tie bar...

Cant remember what steering setup you have, maybe your steering rack is giving you too much lock?
Proper way to fix it is of course, rack limiters.

Rack limiters means steering arms off tho? If not then cool I'll do that

It's Quaife quickrack internals in a standard housing with new arms and ends.

Just found a how-to for doing this on Minis, looks like they can get plastic ones that allow you to slip them over without removing the arms.

Anything like this available for Nova racks? Or can you get universal ones that just require the ID measurement?

Pm Joff and have a word with him, he had similar issues with his, granted his was only gearbox contact but would be worth enquiring though:d

Ive never seen tiebar contact before, chances are its a combination of rack and susspension setup probs, does the corsa epas rack change things? you using adjustable top mounts? if there set wrong and your tracking possitiond wrong then that will cause issues, mine was "ok" by eye but well out, one side is still iffy!

Column shouldn't affect it, I didn't think the quickrack gave any more lock but could be wrong. Eccentric topmounts are quite far back and in slightly for more castor/camber

Could just be a case of being tracked far too inwards then but hard to tell without getting it set up!

Edit: Then again I may be wrong, looks like there's more teeth on the Quaife item (top)! Lock reducers required then! lol

that wont increase turn, just means you turn wheel less lock to lock, ?

Iain

I thought the teeth being bigger and spaced further apart meant it turns quicker, but the total length of teeth affects lock to lock (i.e. the pinion runs out of rack)

And it looks like it's longer on the Quaife stuff?

Adam

Longer overall means it'll have more lock, as its got more travel? So yeah i'd agree.

Ive not properly read what Joff did, but iirc he did some kind of pikey method with some cable ties? Or was that someone else....

The pic youve posted looks like it would solve your problem

Well yeah if the racks actually longer then maybe, but again, i would try get the tracking sorted first, just in case, and i don't think a good MOT tester would like ziptie's as limiters! lol

That's correct, but on the column side, so every time you turn the wheel x more teeth pass the rack through x more mm. More teeth on the rack though will increase the 'turn', assuming all are the same size of course.

MOT man wont be able to see inside the rack to see cable ties.

Id just fit steel wheels for MOT day lol

Just fit some clamps on the rack if you think its going to be a problem.

Personally I very much doubt it will be a issue.

i am having to fit some restrictors to the chevette.

having them machined out of alloy as i prefere that to plastic lol.

and steering arms off isnt a big issue...

Joff used jubilee clamps to reduce the lock. It's my back-up solution if I can't find anything else (don't like the thought of metal jubilee on metal rack housing.

I think plastic will be more forgiving if you hit it hard? Thats why there's plastic cups that sit over the end of the arm joint?

Steering arms look a pain to remove on the car, no room to swing my massive 32mm spanner?

MOT man won't like it though? I'm not too fussed on the 'issue' myself as I won't be going at speed on full lock!

This seems a better option :-

You may have to enquire about the internal diameter - or get something made up similar bespoke!

Nice find! Looks like an alternative to the Mini ones but yeah ID and maybe OD would need to match quite closely

An alternative idea was get some coolant hose, cut it down one side and fit it with a cable tie or two, be a bit softer on the rack?

After a bit of digging I believe those Ford rack limiters are actually BMX seat clamps!

It doesnt matter what it is,its only to keep mot man happy, pull em off in the car park, just for ultimate pis5taking lol

Do you have to take steering arms out to fit these??

Never seen one with a 2 bolt system like that, similar though, seat clamps would work lol

I just had a look and couldn't find any like the ones pictured, they would be easier enough to get made.

If 5 or more people want some I'll make a enquiry on some shiny cnc ones

Bingo, two piece shaft collar! Will measure up a steering rack ASAP (unless anyone has a rack and housing in front of them they can measure up for me)
