must be the linkage; have you had a look at it for anything obvious..?

have you set the linkage using the drill-bit method?

Slacken the clamping bolt on the selector rod, then go to the gear selector turret on top of the gearbox. There is a small rubber bung in the side, remove this and then hold the selector in neutral but pushed over so between 1st and 2nd... Fit a 4/5mm drill bit into the hole left by the bung. This locks the selector in place. Now tighten the clamping bolt while a mate sits in the car holding the lever in neutral but pushed over to the left between 1st and 2nd
have you cut the extra bit off under the gaiter

I'm guessing so due to the fact he can get 5th from 3rd. Definitely sounds like a slighly misaligned linkage to me, especially if the engine has been changed
if hes pushing down from 3rd he will get 5th lol

could be then lol he will have to hack it to death :d
Are you doing this sat still without it running? As the synchro won't work like that, so you might not mesh the gears properly, can roll it a bit in neutral or go from 1st to 5th or something see if it rotates them enough to get it in.
