You could get a 2l 16v engine and fit it yourself for that cash but you'd need 16v brakes and stiffer suspension. I have a GSi and I have Courtenay Sport 270 degree cam kit on it which adds 12bhp, Bill Blydensteins B+ head is ment to be awesome thats around the ?500 mark I think, not sure how much bhp it adds. Its worth getting an uprated manifold (I have a lexmaul and that was well worth it) as it added more pull at the top end of the revs. From Lexmaul I think they are ?250ish. You can get 16v brakes from anywhere and they are usually under ?80 for discs pads and calipers 2nd hand.

What about a 1.8 or 2ltr 8v?
Not much more bhp but much more torque all through the rev range.
