Have you checked out eBay?

I bought mine off there. Dawes XC 1.4 disc. Front suspension, discs front and rear, Shimano gearsets...£200ish. Not a bad bike. Has served me well. Same use as you, now and then!

Thing is if you don't know what you'd looking for on eBay you'll end up with a two ton monster, that will be horrid lol

Do you want full suspension ?

At that price you'll get a higher spec bike without the rear suspension IMO

Id stay away from cable disc brakes as well

Cheap bikes £300-£400 are usually heavy, have useless suspension, crap components, wear out in 5 mins and are generally rubbish to ride! If you go to about £500 you can buy a much better bike that will last longer and be a better ride to start with!
Nothing wrong with cable disc brakes, its when they are not looked after that they start to stick!:thumb:

Try to get a good deal on a year old NEW bike from a shop. You can get a 2009 GT Avalanche 1.0 for £479 from www.paulscycles.co.uk (http://www.paulscycles.co.uk). Very good proven bike, hydraulic discs, 27 speed shimano gearing;) Or full suspension (on the opening web page) MONGOOSE CANAAN COMP - RRP £1000.00 NOW ONLY £499.95!

You can get good deals on ebay on bikes but be careful buying second hand bikes, check for cracks, splits in the welds and crash damage that maybe difficult to spot if youre not used to looking for it!!

full suspension is crap imo...so much energy is wasted when riding it

Completely wrong - you only waste energy on full suspension bike by pedalling erratically in the wrong gear!

Most full suspension bikes now have a pro pedal type lever on the shocks and fork to lock them out for road use then easily chagned to have travel for trail dirt riding!

ive only though full suspension is worth it when hucking youself down the side of a mountain :p

riding on the roads is a bit pointless tbh

Nah, full suspension can be used everywhere now, although if youre a pure road user then hardtail would be better. But due to cost most people now buy one bike to do everything on - roads during the week- off road at the weekends!;)

Plus have you seen the state of the roads (pothole central), the bike trails are smootherlollollollollollollollol

Full suspension is for lightweights :d

Waaaay too many bikes are now designed to be pushed to the top and roll down, fooking pointless IMO

Personally I like a hardtail bike

Full suspension is the way forward - getting lighter with more travel;)

There's more to full suspension than downhill machines that have 7 inches + of travel.

All depends on what you like - personally i'd go full suspension everytime!:d

If you want to get fit and lose weight, have you thought about a road bike.

I find them more enjoyable to ride. They can get a hussle on as well.

Road bike brings us back to the condition of Britain's 'roads' absolutely fooking disgusting around us, pretty sure it will be the same everywhere else :mad:

Personally I've always preferred hardtails over FS, especially if its just for casual weekend riding. Just look into changing the tyres to suit the surfaces you ride on most. Also as said already, spend a little bit more on the initial purchase to get quality components, particularly in the gear/shifting departments... Look around for local bike shops who know what they are on about and can give you genuine advice. Stay away from the likes of Halfords IMO.

Cable disc brakes with 160mm discs (standard size) are more than fine if looked after. Never given me a minutes bother and have always stopped on a penny.

dont go for full suspention if its weight and only an occational ride your looking for, full sus is for more competision and a lot more advanced level of riding. makes you want to look out for are stuff like, kona, specialized, dawes, mongoose, cove and cube
would advise you look at http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Categories.aspx?CategoryID=1986
best riding sight around and you can get a good idea of what you get for your money.
personaly used to work in a bike shop so if you need any more help choosing pm me
there is another site called pinkbike which is the biggest second hand bike selling sight, basicly a forum full of adds of all types

i have no idea of bikes but the following spec Carrera cost me £300 when i got it in january, which rides very well. There is lighter on the market but weight has no issue with me and when it comes to cost, for something to plod about on finding similar spec for that price was nigh on impossible

* Approximate Weight (KG): 14kg
* Chainset: Shimano FC-M311
* Forks: Rockshox Tora TK
* Frame Material: Lightweight 6061 aluminium
* Front Brake: Shimano AM-445 hydraulic disc brake
* Front Mech: Shimano Alivio
* Gear Shifters: Shimano Alivio
* Handle Bars: Kalloy mid rise bars
* Headset: SEMI INTEGRATED
* Number of Gears: 27
* Pedals: Wellgo alloy platform
* Rear Brake: Shimano AM-445 hydraulic disc brake
* Rims: Double wall alloy rims
* Saddle: Carrera
* Stem: Ahead aluminium stem

Thats fine, not saying every bike is bad but £300 - £400 will get you a bog basic bike! ;)

Weight is everything on bikes! Not wanting to offend but nearly everything on the list for youre bike is absolute bottom of the range, works perfectly well for a while but will break and by the time youve replaced a few items it would be easier to spend the extra money on a better bike to have a nicer ride in the first place!:thumb:

Weight might be everything on bikes, but that bike is still only 20% of Dans muscle mass lol

no offence taken, for the limited mileage this old barge will do over the coming years people can spend all the money under the sun on their posh bikes, they will still break their bikes before i need to worry lol lol

Thats the difference, for me its just a thing to go on occasionally and alongside my daughters in the summer months if requested, but with certain toys like adjustable/lockable front susp, hyd discs etc within a sensible budget. Weight has 'nothing' to do with it, for me personally that is :d 14kg, pah i've laid heavier turds lol lol .

lollollollol @ heavier turds!!

Yeah youre bike will serve its purpose in that respect, but as the first post is relating to using it for the occasional sunday ride with the end result to get fitter and lose weight then, getting a slightly more expensive bike with better spec and slightly lighter will make it more enjoyable and will last longer!!:thumb:;)
