View Full Version : Making a backbox louder

My standard OEM backbox on my Audi 80 is very quiet and I want it to be louder. The end which mounts to the rest of the system is a bit broken and will probably need replacing anyway come MOT time. So how am I able to make this louder for cheap without drilling holes in it? It's been suggested I burn the fibreglass stuff out of it by filling it with a bit of petrol. But I'm guessing this is a bit dangerous, what with the fumes burning in the enclosed confines of the box. I know we have a few bodger types on here who I reckon could help so ideas please...lol

chop the box out and replace with a lump of pipe for a proper bodge

When my Nova was overfueling quite alot, I backed off after a large burst of full throttle in turn making fuel collect in the center box (must have been only a small amount), this in an enclosed exhaust actually resulted in my center box blowing apart at the seams and across the road. I wouldn't try igniting Petrol in an Exhaust if I were you.

I've know people to cut the welds on a standard box, remove the wadding and re-weld it. Creates a very raspy tone though.

Why?
Because I like loud exhausts and don't want to spend any money on it! (seriously though - I've agreed to buy a 2nd hand stainless system which will arrive when the owner gets it off his motor but until then I just want to have a bit of cheap fun with the item which is effectively almost junk anyway lol)

In that case cut it off at the Manifold and weld a scaffold pipe in its place. The McDonalds boys will LOVE it :)

1. lagging in silencers is 'rockwool' not glass fibre... it doesn't burn
2. a piece of scaffold is pretty much the worst pipe to use for an exhaust.......
3. why the hell do you want a loud exhaust?????

Cut the cat out and put a pipe in its place, then just put some aftermarket backbox.

Straight though, no backbox job job.

Buy a Ashley exhaust if your wanting something legal and loud-ish ;)

Stainless though won't make it necessarily louder, just makes them last longer (if proper stainless that is) ;)

very hard on an 80 since the cat is around 10mm from a flange...i properly shagged my flange (oh yes i did) so now my exhaust is 2piece...manifold to backbox....and back box

If you want loud, just take the exhaust off completely lol

We shat a guy on a scooter right up when we took the Nova round to have the exhaust made up for the V6 :d

i was the same with my corsa i cut the middle box out welded a straight through bit of pipe there then cut the backbox in half cut all the baffels out then welded it back up could you do that? so it was completely straight through and it was to loud set all the car alarms off going down the street but my chav days are over just a nicley toned backbox i would prefere now:thumb:

This might be the way to go; I'm at the point where I just fancy having a bit of fun with a motor before it gets it's proper stainless on (which won't be a ridiculous 4" noisy thing) It won't be for Maccy D's krooze - I'm too busy marking my pupil's books and preparing for work the next day! Just thought it's something I could do to start my interest up in cars again for this year, while at the same time upskilling and getting a bit handier with a welder without spending too much cash. Is this too much to ask?!
