View Full Version : What car should I get for nurburgring trip?

honie5
14-02-11, 05:04 PM
Me and my brother are planning a trip to the nurburgring for his birthday but there's a twist haha
We've given ourselves a budget of £500 to buy a car and for all mods and that's it! So need a cheap reliable and quick car! If it breaks down we have to fixi t ourselves and I'm not a mechanic so got to be half decent!
I had thought about old shape mr2 but not sure how reliable they are!
Would love a vauxhall but that might be difficult!
Any ideas crazier the better??????

Would probably get a corsa sport and have change to mod it a bit. Least being a vauxhall you may have more of an idea what's wrong if something breaks.

Cheap, relaible AND Fast?lol

Now there is an impossible task!

XEs are bullet proof, so something with one of them fitted - but unless its fecked, you will struggle with that buget.

Curtoise
14-02-11, 05:12 PM
yeh i would say something like a corsa, why not a 1.2 nova? apparently they can beat scoobys and starlet glanzas!

Jack
14-02-11, 05:14 PM
Are S13s still cheap? Used to be able to buy them for £500 a shot, dunno what the prices are like now mind.

RossRog
14-02-11, 05:14 PM

but i'd say i dunno an old 106 xsi? or corsa sport, nova sr....

about £800 ive seen the cheapest one go for

id be tempted by an old beemer tbh

whats insurance gonna be like tho?

honie5
14-02-11, 05:30 PM
Now you can see my dilemma blemming daft idea lol redtops are expensive so might have to get a cheap nova or corsa and just do simple mods to get engine slightly quicker! There's got to be something ideal might be a shed though! I'm not to worried about price of insurance coz as soon as I get back it'll be sold if it makes it back!

calibra-keith
14-02-11, 05:43 PM
£500 bit of tight budget but not impossible, something along the lines of corsa, fezzie, 318 ? what ever you get just strip the hell out of it.

honie5
14-02-11, 05:50 PM
Yer it is very tight but couldn't make it to easy lol yer the lot will be coming out and hope I find something with half decent suspension! corsa seems the way to go so far I think! The more I think about it the harder it seems lol 318 might be dangerous being rear wheel drive specially If I'm driving I get a wee bit competitive lol

davidfox280585
14-02-11, 05:55 PM
early corsa sri 8v nothing else imo

Bubba
14-02-11, 05:56 PM
cavalier 2.0 8v

just take many fuel pump relays

honie5
14-02-11, 05:58 PM
I'm hoping I might be able to get a 2.0 8v then all would be rosy but well see corsa looking best option so far though!

davidfox280585
14-02-11, 06:01 PM
dont overlook the early corsa 1.4si 5 door, cheap wheels and suspension drop and you have a little rocket, same engine as the sri 1.4 mpi not spi i bought one cheap and got 128 out of it on way home good few year ago

honie5
14-02-11, 06:07 PM
That's a good shout to be fair! dont think I could do more door though I'm not a fan lol but if needs must I might have to!

thats my point 5 door = cheaper to buy no sri price tag
cheap one on the bay, will leave you enough pennys for oil and filter and a belt change wheels and some cheap springs your laughing, there little rockets and round the ring it will keep its speed:)

I'm thinking I'd prefer fwd and arnt they expensive to repair? Or have I heard wrong!

bmw156
14-02-11, 06:31 PM
you would prefere FWD - this conversation needs to end lol.

and porter says its faultless.
they might be expensive to repair. but i would rather be in one of those then a corsa lol.

14-02-11, 06:32 PM
a bmw is not an unreliable piece of kit, and considering where you are planning to go to, they might know a few things about fixing them.........

you could buy my saxo vtr thats well rapid lol

honie5
14-02-11, 06:44 PM
Haha don't get me wrong rear wheel drive is the way forward but not for thrashing round a track IMO lol no they are reliable just wether I take risk on being expensive to repair but then like you say mowgli I'd be in the right place for help! I dno what the hell to get that's why I thought id ask you lot!

let me put this idea to you........ with £500 you are not exactly going to break the lap record...... you want something that will get you there & back, and be FUN on the circuit......

by the time you've bought some new brake pads & spare wheels, your budget will be well & truly blown before you even get round to servicing it.....

a bmw 3 series is a fine handling, well balanced car. my brother had an old 320 & reckoned it was as fast cross country as his previous 205 gti 1.9, because its high speed handling was so good....

honie5
14-02-11, 06:48 PM
Bit pricey lol think there would be some stupid forefit for going over 500!

im sorry but your so wrong.

RWD is what you want for going around a track,

F1's are RWD for a reason.
BMW havent made all their cars (dont count the mini) RWD for no reason.

RWD is the way forward.

p.s and once you get back, you should be able to make back your 400 notes on the beemer.

honie5
14-02-11, 06:54 PM
No I know no lap records will be broke it is all about fun and beating my brother! See I thought the Beamer would be a big lump and sluggish but I Spose it being stripped out would help abit. And if your brothers saying that then it won't be to shabby! Hmmm decisions decisions!

mowgli
14-02-11, 06:55 PM
it gets mended??? pay the indemnity fee when booking????

another bid for choice of car.......OMEGA..... big, cheap & fun when driven hard.... and lots of metal between you & the barrier...

Get yourself a motorbike for £500.

honie5
14-02-11, 07:02 PM
That looks tidy to be fair lol and getting my money back so I can spend on the nova would be good! this is going to be harder then I thought! Omega is a safe and cool option!

honie5
14-02-11, 07:04 PM
No not planning to crash just covering all bases! I'd like to think I'm a half decent driver but don't we all!

Fukk taking a 318,underpowered rubbish.
Kia Ora drinks would be interested in that plate though i would imagine
XR2i's are pretty nimble and at £500 you should get one.

Edd
14-02-11, 07:23 PM
At £500 whatever you take there is a risk of breaking down on the continent, that's expensive lol

honie5
14-02-11, 08:05 PM

if you can pick up a ford puma 1.7 with t and t id be very tempted know they are seen as a girls car but there nippy (126bhp) and handle realy well even in standard form so no need to lower and destroy your back on the way over there also **** has fallen out of tigra prices so you culd easily get one on that budget

i would try and pick up a mk3 astra 1.6 or a vectra sri 1.8 or 2.0 as they are easy to fix quick enough to have fun but not get in trouble and you can fit all your kit in and still have room to be comfortable on the trip and all i would do is service it

Don't you or your brother have a car anyway?, could be better off spending £500 on your current car and taking that rather than buying a £500 shed. £500 would get you a set of quality tyres, and change for other nice bits.

good plan especially if its a first trip abroad (driving) and first go round the ring

Gotta be a big engined jag, merc or BMW for 500 quid, comfy for the trip, rear wheel drive for the 'ring. :)

15-02-11, 07:20 PM
Me and my mate Mick took a big old Volvo called Alan, cost all of £150 and scrapped it when we got back for £90. It was always going to be a heap there was no getting away from that but it was funny from start to finnish, easily the best ring trip I've done. Most people out there loved it and those that didn't got shouted at through the megaphone.

Bear in mind its bloody expensive when you get there, what ever you thought you were going to spend double it. Went easter weekend last year and did £800 for a 2 nights all in for me and the Mrs in the TT. Get a few mates and go for it tho. Its a must for any proper car enthusiast.

Were doing it this year (well round europe)and tbh the best bet is to get the biggest, comfiest cruiser you can with most gadgets woth tax and test.we have a budget of £1000 (scumball type rules)and are looking at lexis ls400's and BMW 7 series etc.

Lee

look.... you turn up & pay to go on the 'ring..... it sounds like you are planning to have a crash...

Crashing on the Ring needs to be avoided at all costs. You will be charged for recovery, and any damage that is done to any armco.

You don't need anything fast to have fun round there, I had a proper riot in the Vito :)

Haha the volvo looks class lad but I'm concerned about the dark liquid spilling out the back??? Haha! I did realise you have to pay for recovery etc deffinately will try to avoid that lol I can't wait though going to be a right giggle just make sure I save and make the most of it! Seems quite popular this idea! I might just pick it out a hat what car I go for!

Buying an old cruiser is just the ticket for a long drive. I've got myself an old XJR6 and went to Le Mans in it 4 up last year. Handles suprisingly well for a large lump of Britains finest although the brakes would cook early doors on a track. It was made for a trip to Le Mans -its in British Racing Green -just the ticket for a bit of retro cool on the way down. The fuel consumption is frightening tho - I filled it up 4 times and you are talking well over £75 a go!lol
Still we're only going to get one chance to be part of the global warming phenomenon:d

honie5

Have you been there before ? If not taking something fast that you are unfamiliar with is a very bad idea.

The track takes a lot of time to practice, in 6 trips I've done just over 100 laps and everytime I go back I am suprised with how little confidence I have trying to push hard from the start.

I took a M3 there 2 years ago, rad burst, nearly killed a biker and ended up 2000 euros lighter for something that was no fault of my own, thank fook the insurance dealt with the rest or I'd of been right in the shi.t.

Rentals are ok but crash it and your in a lot of trouble, plus they are wise to this, I've seen a few cars being turned away as they suspected they were rentals and the insurance would of been void if taken on the ring.

Don't get me wrong, I've done it, took a Skoda Roomster round there, didn't do many laps in the end but fook me it was funny, think we smashed out a 10.15 by the end of the weekend but had more fun just taking people out and driving at 70% which seemed to be enough for my passengers LOL

Go by all means, just be aware of the costs, I would give a monkeys what you take, just go and have fun, its not record breakers.

honie5
16-02-11, 10:30 PM
Cheers for the advice pal no I've never been before I can imagine it being pretty hairy lol yer that's the plan just have fun and ease myself into it! Yer I will be saving alot everyone has said it's expensive but hey will be worth it! As regards to rentals it's an ok idea but don't get the fun of the drive over there and more hassle then it's worth if anything goes wrong!
