well after recently knocking my big end bearing when it span a shell,i sourced another "mint" bottom end for my c20xe,
money being tight i thought this would be the cheapest way to get it back on the road,
so i checked the crank visually on the new bottom end and grabbed the conrod cap and checked for play as didnt want to disturb anything if i didnt need to,all looked ok so removed my engine and got it stripped to assess the damage id done:(
so without crying too much id span a shell so not end of the world!,i then replaced the oil pump gasket on the new block and cleaned it all up,time being tight as its not my garage i was using,
engine all built up new head bolts, victor reinz gasket my timing gear on,also was an excuse to fit my polybushed arms and tie brackets and the clutch release bearing needed replacing anyway,
with the help from blue peg(rich) and damo form here we got it all in and piped up and ready to go:p
started it and a bit noisy as they are but cleared up when the lifters pumped themselves up,then thought i had a stuck lifter which were noisy:eek:

took the car to my mates work reset gears degreased bay from our oily fingers and general work i needed to do,
heres the pics from our work

now id done 200 mile in the first day going to work to give it a good run make sure it was sweet and see if the rattle worsened,
gave it a wynns engine flush and new oil and filter again(only been in 3 days and filter only 3 days old)
came to the in laws, sat a few hour started it up and knockier than usual!!!!!

gave it a steady slow run to my other mates garage (hes a 62 year old garage owner been in the trade all his life proper old skool clever guy)
he took a listen and diagnosed it as a big end!!!!!
he removed a plug lead at a time to determine which one as he said this removes load from the certain cylinder, removed number 3 lead and was quiet as a mouse so now the new bottom end is as good as the one ive just removed:cry:

after 3 nights work with some help from others my only option is to shell out and rebuild it myself though funds are tight and time and i thought this was the last bit of work ready for summer

SR-Rally

I no the feeling. I have first rally of the championship next Saturday. Put new engine in and it's smoking very bad from the breather. At the moment it's sat in my garage with no mot and missing it's pistons as I'm waiting for new rings (not standard so not here till Tuesday :s)

It will all be worth it in the end :)

I can really relate to this,my xe blew up spectacurlarly on the way to fuel up night before pvs last year,i was gutted.
Took it out and fitted a 2.0 seh til the rebuild was done.
On the day of my kids christening i took my sis and her bloke home to hull as it was a proper nice day i was going to prat around on the way home, got just outside of beverley on way there and the water pump failed and it cooked and seized solid.
Both times i had to remove the engines on my own,as my mates live 40miles away, its a big ask to ask for them to help (tiny violins have now snapped their strings lol)
Anyway hope it gets sorted mate, keep the faith!

even though you were strapped for cash, new shells are a must on a s/hand engine.....
