Tried fitting the stereo this morning but it doesn't turn on?

Coming from the car iv got one red and one black wire then a few speaker wires?

On the stereo there's 4 wires live earth illumination and ariel I think... Anyone know how the wiring works?

Thanks dan

well. type of stereo & model of car might help, but usually they run a permanent live for the memory, and a switched live for the power on, then possibly a dash illumination wire.

if its an early, you wont have a switched live

A reg saloon 1.2 gl is the model.... On further inspection iv found a brown wire , so now there's just red and brown... On the radio there's + - illum and ariel

red is perm live,
brown is earth,
gray/green will be illum (bin that)

red will go to orange on the new radio
brown will go to black
you will need to run an ignition live to the red on the new radio

sqeek simplez!

My 2 1984 Novas have a black wire which is ther permanent live and not an earth so be careful, get one of those cheap currnt sensing screwdiver things

General (European) vehicle wiring standards are :

Red - perm live (Black / Red on the ign switch IIRC)
Black - ign switched live
Brown - ground

Unless it's French. Or Italian.
