was out in car with my mum ,when she put her clutch in it made a very rough and loud clunking noise and wouldnt select a gear . so turned off engine had a check to see if i could see what it was no joy there so started it again just started to put clutch in and again the noise came and a horrible smell from under the bonnet smelt of burning there was only 10 miles left to get the car home so just got her to drive it home without using clutch , any ideas ??

Yup, replace clutch and release bearing. If it's a 1.2 then it's a doddle, less than 2 hours (I've seen it done in 45 mins)
