Hammerite will be perfectly fine underneath. I done the inner arches on my astravan, 1.5 years and 24k and there still perfectly fine. As long as the surface is clean and dry when you apply. (though applying on top of underseal may not be the best idea)

thats exactly what i done, i bought one ffrom someone on here ages and and still have it

well, since i bought the white hammerite last night just waiting for it to come in the post, i decieded to go and get the floor pan ready, the previous owner had undersealed it, the front section of the floor pan had done well, but the rear round the spare wheel well etc was another story. so went away this morning and bought stonechip and wire wheel grinder attachments and got cracking :thumb:

stuff i used

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/27052011515.jpg

started removing the underseal, what a messy job!

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/27052011506.jpg

and started applying stonechip

quite pleased to say the rear chassis legs are very tidy as is the rear panel and boot floor. and as i left her for today

looks good what attatchment did you use to remove the old underseal?

im gonna be doing the whole underside of my car

dosnt the underseal clog up wire wheels?

moffat
27-05-11, 04:45 PM
used a wire wheel attachment on a grinder, didnt clog up the wire wheel just removed it quite easily, the factory seam sealer need a bit of effor to remove, and makes it extremly messy. im happy with it tbh and cant wait to get it all painted white. still need the passenger inner rear arch welded though, just needs a small plate :(

small ish update, painted bottom arms, tie bars and hubs, coilovers will be repainted soon also,

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00788.jpg

transfered the speedlines over to the corsa last week aswell,

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00787.jpg

then on thursday gary_126 turned up and collect some bits for his mate and we were chatting away, and i ended up with a set of 5 irmscher softstars at a cracking price. really couldnt refuse them thanks again mate and cheers for the advice :)

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00789.jpg

temptation got the better of me so i deceded to go out and get them fitted, also the other reason is that there fitted with 195/40/16s so theres plenty clearance as im wanting the car pretty low

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00791.jpg

also found someone to weld my archs for me so they will be done soon, then can crack on with the bodywork

The turbo you want to use is off a small turbo escort cosworth it's a t25 cheap to buy 2nd hand, either that or a hybrid Renault 5 T2 turbo
I've still got in my shed and original courtney T2 off for this conversion but I'm having it rebuilt and keeping hold of it

yep the plan is either a t2 or t25, plenty saabs use t25s too iirc

just what i can get my hands on first, concentrating on the shell atm before engine build though

been a few weeks since i last updated, not got that much done tbf, fitted the petrol tank but whilst i was underneath it looks like it could do with another coat of white hammerite, get that done at some point. next up was a trip to the scrappies and i came home with a front mount intercooler for a 5er :) think its off a transit van,

next up was fitting the side skirt clips, havnt done this before, i painted the back of the clips whilst they were on the skirts and placed them on the car, marked enough for me to drill holes and fit them, only got the passenger side done atm but the drivers will be done today. overall im happy with them for a 1st attempt, wanted the clips on before the car got painted, dont think i could drill into fresh paint lol

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/278593_214887491889205_100001038669748_646166_3203 176_o.jpg

then something ive benn missing for a while... a grille with standard slats, my old silk violet one got banged on, sitting built up atm as the garage needs the roof fixed and cleared out so i can store stuff,

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/272029_214885841889370_100001038669748_646137_2323 681_o.jpg

also been trying to split the head off the engine to check the bores etc and ive rounded 2 of the headbolts, so trying to get them off atm, proving quite difficult :(

brainsnova
14-07-11, 02:24 PM
There's a socket set you can get for removing rounded bolts

i just got my e16se tubo running :) but the smile on my face didnt last too long as the piston ring went bang about half a mile down the road :(. would a decompression plate be needed to run a T2?
piston rings have been ordered and i have a day free on friday so ill be able to get it done then :)

brainsnova
19-07-11, 12:13 AM
It's coming along nicely but primer is absorbent so best to cover it or paint it with top coat so it doesn't start to rust.

Depends on how much boost but your E16 runs around 11:5.1 CR and most turbo'd cars run near 8:5.1 so yes I'd lower the CR or run low boost.

Moffet I'd get the car covered or painted cis as said primer is porus and won't protect from rust mate.
Good progress though :)

would like to agree but the reality is i cant, its meant to have been stitched welded, but tbh its a few tacks here n there, so basically the plan it so rip all the filler back of, get most back to bare metal get rid of the crap welds, looking into a strenthening kit aswell, and get it all re done, the way i see it, is im hoping for around 150bhp in a 19year old car, be aswell doing it at this stage than later imo. no plans to sell once complete, probs one ill keep a hold off so going take my time and build it gradually, seeing as it would cost me 5K to insure lol, i could insure an astra GSI turbo for that lol

update**

as some of you now i bought a bare 1.6 8v e16se when i got this, and since then ive been looking about for bits to build it up to complete spec, so i put up a post in the scottish region as it be too expensive to get everything posted induvidaly and got a few bits dropped off last night from fraser "thegingerwhinger". got a complete inlet manifold, early engine loom and battery loom, and a gearbox which consits of an f15 casing, f13 internals and the 5th gear from a nova diesel. all at a good price.

some bad news as one of my piston rings are away so ive decided to go ahead and rebuild the engine when funds allow. might be aswell since im turboing it and want it to last.

few pictures...

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00976.jpg

also got a standard flap type petrol cap from vxkev last week. dont really like the areo ones so this is more inkeeping with the oem+ theme

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00979.jpg

went out earlier and started to clean the gearbox up, hopefully get it painted silver soon, also started stripping the inlet so i could clean and prep that for painting.

had a few hours spare today, so since i can get the car in garage i decided to get the panels off and interior out, had originally meant to do this when i originally got the car home but due to it being outside and not having enough room to store anything...

pulled it out the first morning looking like this,

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC00991.jpg

started removing bits...

no pictures off the other side but you get the idea, also got the windscreen out without cracking it,

tomorrow il get the quarter windows off, the softstars and coilovers will be whipped off for standard units and steelies to keep it rolling so il be able to get it off for welding and painting etc

also think my steering colum is knackered, so if anyone has one going spare pm me

quick pic off my side skirts clips i fitted, first time doing this.... quite pleased with the result

also sold my courtenay interior today, some folk said i should of kept it but, im making the car a GSI replica, and being 19 a genuine gsi is out of the question, also have proper bumpers and skirts anyway, so ive hopefully sourced a mint gsi interior. also means is sticking to the originality feel of the car that im going for.

bought some more parts for this, been considering another nova for a track car recently but dont really have the space for another nova with having my wee corsa which is a perfect daily, and this is going be used in dry weather only so i thought i could maybe take this round knockhill occasionally hence the spax rsx front suspenison ive bought.

also bought some ajustable avo rear shocks of iain on here (cheers mate) :thumb:

next problem was if i was to crash i might damage my front bumper so decided to buy a big mouthed gsi front bumper off kev which means ill get some good air flow for the intercooler aswell ;)

been having a bit of a mishap with the nova recently, not sure what to do with it atm, keep building it the way i want or do i track car it..... if i keep going with the build its going be sitting around and used when i can but if i track it i could have more fun and get more use.

anyway one of the mounting studs for steering rack has snapped so theres some movement and i tried to fit my colum the other night got it on, fitted a dash then went to mount a steering wheel and it didnt go on the colum seemed too short, cant even put the bolt on as the threads are knackered :(. so going get dash back off and buy another colum and see if i can get it all mounted back up properly

did manage to buy some other bits, euro rear clusters from ebay

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC01037.jpg

rear avo shocks (perfect for how low i want it or if i track it)

time for another update, decided to start applying filler to my rear arch that was welded a few weeks back, applied the 1st layer, let it dry then sanded it down, wiped all the dust etc off then mixed up some more and applied another layer started to get the shape of the arch looking quite good for a 1st attempt. so i sanded back the 2nd layer quite alot and applied some filler primer. need to get some stopper and more sand paper and discs, but its a start in the right direction :)

a few pictures

1st layer - looks quite rough, not used filler for ages and by the time i mixed it was starting to set lol was also bare metal underneath

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC01094.jpg

the i sanded it down and applied 2nd layer

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg228/moffat_photos/nova%20project/DSC01096.jpg

some filler primer applied then just as it started raining i got the car back in the garage

As per Andy says though you should really have numbered the pistons and put the bearing caps back on pistons/rods they came off as it can make a difference(very slight) when putting back together as its an old engine and things do wear, but not always evenly!

Good though, keep it going!

27-10-11, 10:11 PM

Headwork is a very skilled process (anyody can do port matching) but more often than not diy headwork can make it worse. defo recomend getting a specialist to do it. There used to be a boy on migweb who was very good at it iirc his name was gary? not 100% sure though

There meant to have a small amount in, mine has too.. personal I wouldnt worry unless it smokes to much. is it a journal bearing set up or ball bearing?

If my T25 is two big I plan to fit a T2 as I think its should fit the same!

moffat
23-11-11, 05:36 PM
mones in and out a slight bit, deffo shouldnt be like that, dont know if its smoking or not as engines in bits for a rebuild and im sure there ball bearings, yeah the T25 and T2 are same fitments iirc

Cheers for the replies, yeah I was very surprised I got my hands on a manifold so snapped it up straight away. Disc back axle is deffo worth it when running 150bhp + imho.my aim is for 150 anyway. On regards to my avatar that's no my car its scorge01s gsi. Used to belong to wilsonsri running a courtenay 1.6 8v turbo. Basically how mine will look etc

Disc rear beam is of no better breaking tbh mate, youll just have hassle setting it up, like others ive been there and done it andy switched back top drums and that was with a XE

New standard shoes, drums and cylinders will work just as good

I really wouldnt bother with a rear disc axle. I backed mine off on the bias valve til it basically did nothing. Stay with drums.

update time

not getting as much done atm as id like but trying to keep getting some bits and bobs done as and when i can. right so got some more filler on the back arch and hit with some primer, still another layer to go on both sides get rid of the high and low spots. but coming out well for a 1st go. since the engines stripped ive gave it a lick of paint to freshen it, hopefully be getting that rebuilt later on in the year ;)

another update time,

didnt plan on getting this done for a while, but had a couple days of no bad weather so took advantage off it, got the car into some primer, used 2pac from a gun, most off the cars came up pretty well, still a few imperfections with the archs and passenger wing so will get them sorted soon then i'll hit the car with some fine wet and dry and give another going over :)

1st up was the engine bay

dust it with matt black, then wet sand it 800grit (the black will show up any imperfections) The theory being the black will be left in any low spots. saves alot of time and works well

well some good news and some bad, got paid off last tuesday so thats me unemplyed again :( and theres absolutly no jobs out there atm, so i was all set for getting the car painted asap but will be on hold till ive got the money. still a bit of prep to do anyway.

anyways kev was breaking a gsi so i managed to get a lot of parts for mine, basically everything needed to complete mine :d

ended up getting a newly rebuilt e16se engine with loom, ecu, afm, 22spline shafts, mounts everything bar a gearbox. ive got a box anyway so thats that sorted. still be turbo'd, this just saves me rebuilding my old engine and sorucing ecu's and afms etc.. also got the complete gsi car loom, (that should be fun fitting) complete interior, a windscreen, tank and external pump and fuel lines, gsi servo and i think thats everything lol cheers bud
