Just for anyone who needs to use the M1 at anytime soon through the midlands...

There has been a massive accident which is blocking both sides of the motorway - involving army vehicles on their way north to North Yorkshire barracks.

They expect traffic queues for quite some time while its cleared... diversions are in place though.

UPDATE:

That section of the M1 will be completely closed until around 9pm tonight.

Part of the accident was caused by a Tank falling off the back of a transporter and into the motorway. If thats the sole cause or if that was a result of something else I dont yet know.

I've spoken to a truck driver who told me this.....

Car pulls out infront or Army transporter, Driver swerves into Lane 3, his lorry jack-knifes with his trailer pushing his car sideways into on coming traffic. As he crosses central resevation the Tanks break free and as he collides his back of his trailer is sent spining to catch further cars.

As for the Driver who started who whole sequence, he/she drove off - maybe not even aware of what his/her mistake/action caused.

Yupp - but surely the person who caused it will have started thinking by now "fookin hell i was nearly involved with that, and hey - OMG i cut up a lorry earlier!!"

You'd hope so, but if they were on a Mobile etc....?

It's like that guy that caused a massive pile up on the M6 a few years ago. He was driving a Red cavalier and locked up his brakes, went weaving across the 3 lanes, nearly hitting the central reservation, managed to control it and drove off. After that there was one of the worst pile ups to date. I don't think anyone was killed, but there were cars crashing into each other for the next 5/6mins. The incident was captured by a couple of people filming the state of the motorways. It has been on the telly loads of times, but i doubt the owner of the red cavalier ever stepped forward, and no doubt neither will the person that caused this accident.

The thing is... Have you ever seen how military convoys drive up the motorways? Really close to each other and if the first truck pulls out to overtake they all do it without signalling and without checking their mirrors - as though they are in the battle field and avoiding enemy fire or something.

The army would never admit to it but it could be the result of jsut such a manouver that this insident has taken place... the guy in the car that "caused it" could have jsut been trying to avoid being hit by an 80tonne lorry and trailer. You never know.

Also, Military Convoys/Vehicles are quite hazadous, Top whack of 55mph isn't enough for todays Roads.
