Here is my friends 4x4 nova, as promised.

Its really cool, but bare in mind its very much a WIP, so no "it needs a wash/paint/yadayada"

He doesnt really use the pc much, as he has a unit, business, work and a child, and lives with his mrs.

However, heres afew pics of some mincing down his unit.

Hope you all enjoy.

Its ace.

Erm, when you say running? Yes, on the axel stands, turning all 4 wheels.

He ordered the parts for the brake lines off ebay today, so expects them at the weekend, then he will drive it round the (private) yard.

What's donated the prop etc. Vauxhall?

Going for a high comp Xe with a supercharger.

Est 200bhp, nothing to wild.

Lamp, it was a calibra one, cut and sleeved by local engineering company.

Doubt it.

He doesnt do shows.

I am offering to tow it to PVS for him though, if he will let me, just to show people etc.

It needs a wash, some paint and a yadayada.

MK1_Ben
02-02-11, 10:45 PM
Looks good so far, surely he's going to fit thinner wheels / extend the arches though, as said the second it hits the floor the wheels will eat the arches.

hiya every body thanks for the nice comments matt told me he was putting it on here im the chap whos built it sorry it looks so messy its coverd in grinding dust and swarf anybody else done one of these??? if its somwere near ready by the time a show comes then it will be going!!

autoworksnovasport
02-02-11, 11:00 PM
arches wont catch as the axel stands are under the suspension arms were the shocks mount so that is sat how it will be on the floor and the suspension is tarmac setup (solid)

MK999
02-02-11, 11:03 PM
You will want to seriously think about running that a lot lot lower with bigger arches or a thinner track width then, as it's going to handle a lot worse than it could do sat that high.

autoworksnovasport
02-02-11, 11:08 PM
its not high dude just how ive mounted the arches ect to compensate for the track of the calibra rear end its on its ****

So good to see a 4x4 project that isn't just the usual hot air about what's 'going' to happen.

autoworksnovasport
03-02-11, 08:21 PM
looks good dude! it appears you dont like the way ive gone about mine cant see how using a calibra floor is the wrong direction to go though as its all original vauxhall not so much a "cut and shut" as it all fits very well

AlanH
03-02-11, 08:37 PM
top work mate, nice to see one working. dont think ste was having a dig at your car mate, that approach will most likely be fine for the setup you're running but ste is planning on 500+bhp so needs everything to be as strong/rigid as possible, hence the different approach. Hope to see you at some shows later this year

i wasnt having a pop mate i have just never been a fan of welding one cars floor into another nothing wrong as such if done correctly but just dont like it plus as mentioned im planning alot more power ect add to that the ride hight im after ect if i used the standard floor ect it just wouldnt work the way i wanted due to camber VC wind up issues ect
this way i have raised the entire subframe assembaly to allow the ride hight ect i wanted and still be within the abilitys af the camber adjustment bushes to correct geometry issues
The other major reason i did mine like that is novas arnt square nor are calibras which without a table hub jig im my opinion would have made it near imposible to get the geometry spot on. just because it measures correctly from point to point in the car it doesnt mean the points of the 20 year old car your measuring from are still where they should be
This in mind was why i built mine completly from scratch with framework built square and marked ect in and out the car but theres still no gaurentees mines going to be correct either.

good luck though mate pleased to see someone else having a go and seemingly making it work spot on mate you will have to let me know how it drives i cant wait to get mine done especialy now claires got a 300bhp sti which is quicker than my cav turbo lol

Everything clears as it is?

ste porter

i contemplated not going the tunnel route but its not feasable as a nova tunnel isnt straight and the prop will sit slightly of center (ofset on diff ect)
and this is where it all went down hill for me and i ended up space framing the whole car as there just isnt the strength to pick up from the original bulkhead and floor once its been choped

another word of advice think seats! my tunnel is self fabricated and is as small as i was prepered to go and its only just left enough room for my real narrow seats just a thought

Good point.

Although the prop and exhaust are in?

So I don't see the advantage of a tunnel that's all.

autoworksnovasport
08-02-11, 07:13 PM
just thinking more of strength putting in a one peice tunnel rather than a few bits welded together yeah have thought about seats may be mounted as part of the tunnel (ie flat spots )

just an observation mate but that hydraulic handbrake have you fitted that or are you removing it?
because i do hope you know the consiquinces of using it with a locked vauxhall 4x4 transferbox
not trying to be cocky or offend i just woundered why its there as use of it will result in a mess due to the design of the box
im not saying because i er on the side of caution its because the planet gears have a 90 percent chance of shattering if at any point the rear wheels are locked while the 4x4 is in use and the fronts are still rotating as the vaux 4x4 is not a central diff its a viscous
and you will be very lucky if the sun gear doesnt strip aswell

I like to read something different, also seems a contest between you and Mr Porter to get the 4x4 nova that could be built in different ways but still with a similar finish.

I'd love to see a santapod shakedown of both yours, may be a mag feature in something like TV (Total Vauxhall) to show both your skills, watch out for Porter though he'll cover your face with cans of Red Zbull though lol

Edit: I'm a tad ratted tonight so if it makes no sence that's why lol
