Technically not legal, there are a few expensive places on the net doing them, Brettski's nova has them

use them as show wheels. Get a pro to do them, worth paying for imo.

Can't find anything that would imply that they are illegal. Kiwi can you link me to something?

Its what I have heard through chatting to people, its something about the way they are made and how they stick out

alot of forums have started threads about this and it has always ended with them being illegal

I like the looks but not the stance.

a banded steel rim is perfectly legal if the welding is done properly there is nothing in law to say they are illegal to run on a road car. hgv low loader trailers have 3 piece split rims, its only if the wheel sticks out too far that they are illegal.

My mates old Cinquentio (sp??) had banded steelies, they looked proper gash on it though as they were painted yellow and made it look like it was a range rover (as in stance wise) if they weren't yellow and on another car they would've looked sh!t hot though. He run them about all over the place. Never got pulled.

Perfectly legal, usually they're fairly wide though so would need the tread inside the arches to remain legal :)

The concerns are to do with safety, there are quite a few companies who weld them properly, laser guided and pristine welds. The dirt cheap ones that sometimes pop up on Ebay have usually been done by "some guy in a shed".

There's a person on "that online auction site" who advertises Banded steels for sale, but it's an AD for him making them out of your wheels, I've used him for a set before and many other people on other forums I regular have too with no problems and good quality work :)

I was wrong :(

just founf this on another forum

Some of you may recall that, in the midst of a banded wheels thread, I e-mailed VOSA for their view on the practice. The question I asked was:

I have a query about a specialist modification to steel car wheels over which there is much debate about legality.

The modification involves cutting off the outer part of the steel wheel rim, welding a band of additional steel to the wheel, then welding the outer rim back onto the band which has been inserted. The aim of the modification is to allow the wheel to accept a much wider tyre for increased grip. The welding is usually carried out by qualified welders.

Can you confirm whether there is anything within the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, or any other legislation, which prohibits the use of wheels which have been modified in this way?

They have now responded as follows:

Dear Mr Hilton

There are no specific regulations in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, as amended (C&U) relating to the type of work you propose.
Regulation 100 of C&U does require that all parts fitted to a vehicle are not likely to cause a danger to the user of the vehicle or other road users. I have attached a copy of Regulation 100.
Additionally, you will need to ensure that the wheels do not protrude from the wheel arches, or that modifications are made to the bodywork of the vehicle to ensure that the wheels do not protrude.

Yours sincerely

I can't copy Reg 100 because what I've been sent is a scan.

My reading of the above is that banded wheels which are properly welded are legal. Ones with crap welding aren't.

on hgv's when you put big wide tyres on the front you have to add spatz to cover the wheels, same for cars,

Not at all, but on a red fiat cinqitentio (sp??) ???

I hate them cars at the best of times... But yellow banded steels?? Hmm I'll see if I can find a picture of them on the car then you can make up your own mind.

Running joke you obviously missed, I like painting things a certain shade yellow, from change saving tins to welders! lol

lol clearly not up to speed on that joke then!

On another note, just found the Cinq.

The steels weren't banded as such, just made wider. So not sure if it proper banding or just some weird way of making the wheels wider...

But here they are in all their glory :wtf:

Judging by the gorgeous gap around the centre bores, I would say they are off a different car with a smaller offset or spaced. I like how they match the rear plate.

God only knows, I never paid too much attention to this one as I thought it looked proper gash.

The holes on the side are spaced closer together on the weller wheel than the ones on the Cinq

it was used as an example.. there are lots of different weller wheel designs, yet they all look like cheap trailer wheels...... the ones above look like a formula ford one.

the look like they have just been flipped and mounted backwards, the landrover nuts and old school vdubbers used to do it for 'better' stance
