I know dick about this subject but seeing as he has the inside low down on just about everything I though Flyin Flea would most probably have something to say & step up to the plate and summarise the main points for all the rest us plebs who are sadly so badly misinformedlol

FLMFAO hahahahahahahahahahahahaha lol lol lol
It's actually quite simple, it's physics but under a microscope. What happens at tiny scale just ****s up those that aren't open minded enough to just accept it lol
For instance, everything is made of atoms that are surrounded by negative charge particles, much like a magnet these repel each other, with an astounding amount of force (the kind of force that makes milligrams of nuclear matter a nuclear bomb) so... nothing in the world ever touches, ever.
A fantastic argument for that sexual harassment case imo! "I never touched her! As stated by <famous physicist>..." lol
oh and atoms aren't the smallest things going, quarks and anti quarks are where its at lol (and even they're made of smaller things I don't remember the name of)
I foresee Flea and MK999 battling it out to earn the championship title belt "Ultimate Nerd" lol

Ho hum well I'm a bit disappointed - it seems the subject of quantum physics will remain a mystery......
or will it?
perhaps its being explained on a PNG forum in a parallel universe at this very moment?!
Yay!!:thumb: There is hope after all:d
I dont think this really counts as quantum physics but Jack told me something once..
something about when a car is travelling along a road and a fly hits the windscreen... due to the law of physics (I think but I might be very very wrong as to what law it covers), both the car and the fly stop for the smallest of fractions of time.
I couldnt get my head round it but Jack was very convincing.
maybe he tricked me!

I read that on another forum and it turned into a mass debate (get my coat? :( )
I don't think that even one single atom of the train window actually stops (in the ground reference frame - given my experience in that DWFTTW thread, better be careful :-).
True, part of the windshield will slow down a little bit, but it doesn't need to come to a full stop at all. After all, that would even be contradictory, because imagine the train drives at 100 mph, and the fly comes in at 30 mph. In this ground reference frame, it means that there must be a point on the windshield that momentaneously has 0 mph velocity wrt ground, and hence - 100 mph wrt the train.
But now consider that the fly comes in at 100 mph and the train does only 30 mph. That's the same impact, no ? (schroder, keep out of this).
But now the window should only do momentaneously -30 mph wrt the train and hence undergo a much smaller deformation ?
No, there's no reason to have 0 mph for a point on the window. What happens is that at the point of impact, at the moment of impact, given the relative rigidities of the two objects, you can consider the fly's body as a liquid. The first few atoms of the fly will undergo a large acceleration in the forward direction, need to undergo a force for that, and that force will come from a small deformation of the windshield (the deformation is a function of the force needed and the rigidity of the windshield).
After that, you get a compression of the body-fluid of the fly and as the shockwave propagates through the fluid, more and more body material gets accelerated forward. This modifies the force on the windshield which will bend accordingly.
Every atom of the fly's body will eventually come to a stop and then go forward, but that doesn't mean that the point on the windshield has to. The distance between these atoms and the windshield can change when the fly's atoms come to a stop. They don't have to be rigidly constant (or 0, when "touching"). There is a finite interatomic distance, and the force starts acting when this distance is not 0 and not yet at its minimum.

something about when a car is travelling along a road and a fly hits the windscreen... due to the law of physics (I think but I might be very very wrong as to what law it covers), both the car and the fly stop for the smallest of fractions of time.
Bull, the fly stops assuming it's travelling towards the car in the first place, as it's speed must transfer to negative to positive or vice versa depending which direction you take as positive so must pass 0 to do that, the car will slow very slightly (as in x10^-triple figures slight) but will not stop, if it stopped the forces required to stop a tonne of car in a fraction of a second would turn it inside out before it carried on moving again!! (which is exactly why that fly ends up across your screen ass first head spread across 2 inches)
If the fly is moving in the same direction as the car neither stop.
The laws you are looking at would be Newtons laws of motion, and I can only imagine he has it confused with newtons 3rd, "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction". This covers the forces of something sitting on a solid surface for instance, as it pushes down the surface pushes back up to counteract it and keep it in equilibrium. The key word here though is equal! nothing ever moves or changes velocity as a result of newtons 3rd law as the 2 opposing forces are equal.
For movement you require newtons 2nd, Force = Mass x acceleration. So this reaction as mentioned in newtons 3rd is only a force and not a movement! So there is not an equal movement 'reaction' from the car moving backwards for a split second, only a force which slows it slightly which is derived from the force required to accelerate the mass of a fly (F=MA) not the equal and opposite rule.
Bull**** fact and mistake busted!

On this course?! Are you having a laugh? lol
That's a bit odd as I'm pretty sure he was PhD physics? maybe some theoretical backwards thing that's never advanced beyond hypothesis stages, that kinda physics is fun at times, but I'm pretty sure the laws of motion (the only thing in physics which is actually fully proven and accepted as law iirc!) contradict the statement. Like I say the forces involved in stopping a car in a split second are phenomenal.

FFS, BTT (if I must), QF in 'simples'
Imagine you have two empty shoe boxes on a table, A and B. You put a cat in A and put the lid on. Without taking the lid off, where is the cat?
Its implicit the cat is in A. But thats because thats what you learnt as a child. Thats the rules that things have obeyed all your life. You put something in a box, it will still be there later (unless someones nabbed your stash).
At the atomic level all our normal rules go out the window. Gravity is irrelevant. So, the cat could still be in A. It might not be there at all. Or it might be in B. We dont know.... because we're at the atomic level here.... the rules are different. QF is the study of where the cat is!
FTR, 'The cat' relates to different atomic energy levels.

sooo if I squash both boxes then open one the cat will be fine?
Or will it have used 2 of it's 18 half lives?
whilst we're at this science thing,
1. buttered toast always lands butter side down.
2. cats always land on their feet.
3. if you affix buttered toast face up on a cat's back & then drop the cat from a height will it simply hover, and disrupt the natural order of things, or will natural forces pull the cat apart, or will it spin in mid air, creating a new carbon free form of energy???

I heard the quantum physics talking to me clearly and decided to pop in on the forum. I dont understand it, quantum physists dont understand it either lol, but we do know how to use the theory an it does work and fits to experiments. Have a look at the slit experiment where light behaves as a wave and a particle. A single particle will behave as a wave when passed through a slit, we dont know why but it does happen.
Anyway im currently doing PhD in astrophysics doing some simulation work into Saturns moon Trojan moon systems, they arent doing what I want them do so far lol
^bloody hell, blast from the past much lol
Hello stranger :)
lol hello phil, still running the corsa?
i think a fly stopped it, but only momentarily
lol @ Phil coming back to only post in this arguament lol
Bloody hell the Philmeister's back!
The cat thing seems feasible but Phil's slit light thing where individual photons are fired at a card with 2 vertical slits in it was shown the other night on telly - think it was called "What is reality".
Apart from a plank I think someone also needs to get a quantum computer hooked up to work on the subject. From what i gather no one can get it and if someone thinks they do it just means they definitely dont as things stand at the moment( i think? or perhaps i dont lol)
Whatever, it is most certainly the biggest headfcuk presently known to man. Its probably best not to try and get our heads round it - well except for the likes of Phil - because all it actually does is lead us to the assumption that there is no such thing as what we think of as reality, that our existences or non existences are totally irrelevant in the scheme of things and its really not worth getting out of bed in the morninglol
As I said, its just bullsheets to keep uber nerds busy and funded till we need a lot of cannon fodder to put infront of the next invasion attempt lol
i barely went to school so have no idea what the fukk its all about lol

....it appears you need to use a plank,Dyou mean Planck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planck_constant)
....I think someone also needs to get a quantum computer hooked up....Speakin of which.... computers just shouldnt work too!
Your pooter (what ever your choice of weapon) uses loads of micro-processors. These are contain millions of transistors. A high speed switch.
In my first year of electronics engineering we had to make a transistor using two diodes.
A diode is a very simple electronic component. It only lets current flow in one direction.
To make the transistor we connected two diodes in series, but facing in opposite directions. You then have three points you can connect... the two ends, and in the middle where you joined them together.
If you put a voltage across the two ends (need I say) no current will flow, because the diodes are facing opposite directions.
Next, prof asked us all what would happen if you apply a small voltage to the middle, we all said "nothing, no current would flow".
WRONG! Applying a small current to the middle junction allows a greater current to flow through both of the diodes! This should not work... at all! The universe is fcuked up! But it does.... Coz its quantum physics! All the normal rules go out the window at the atomic level.
Flea, did you invent Quantum Physics?
We did the same experiment with two diodes to make a transistor and because the PNP/NPN bits of silicone werent joined at the molecular level it didnt work... This was to prove you have to join the sillllycons properly rather than nailing together a load of diodes.
Semiconductors are a piece of piss to understand as its merely at the electron level

No, I didnt have a turbo charger back then.... or a car even!
Ah Daniel san, your inexperience is still your downfall but with time you shall achieve greatness when you reach your non physical powers!
Or in layman's terms...... FAIL :d
Whilst what you say is true at a physical level, Newton's laws don't apply at the atomic and subatomic levels. Not even at molecular level as such I don't think.
Although technically the windscreen doesn't stop as such, as the forces of the collision exert themselves atomically on the glass, the deformation at atomic level will result in the very outer atoms/molecules coming to a stop before before being pushed forward again by those behind. Deflection, but of a miniscule amount.
Think of the fly as a football and the windscreen as a goal net, the net being the very outer layer of the screen. As the ball hits the net it moves back before being pulled back into shape by the tension of the ropes, or the molecular structure of the screen. Now imagine the net's several layers thick with smaller gaps and more tension. When the ball hits it'll still move the first layer backwards, only not as noticeably as there's a lot more structure to push it back into shape quicker.
Now think of the impact and ropes as magnetic forces and you're kinda there lol
I don't fully understand it by any stretch of the imagination and I know that over simplifies it a bit but I think it gives the jist of it
Fook knows, more to the point did we ever find out what happened to mr Beckett, or was he lost in the annuls of time, 'leaping' about for all eternity lol
He met Al in person and was taken home but couldn't face going in iirc. Did see the last episode but it was a loooooong time ago
i have been re-reading bill brysons 'a short history of nearly everything' and basically, on a sub atomic level, particles can be everywhere & nowhere at the same time, they act in such random ways that everything is possible working on current thinking.

I'm still not convinced reality is actually real!
the weird bit is that every atom mostly a load of nothing..so we are actually something crazy like 99% empty space.. radiation passes straight through us all the time, occasionally hitting bits & bouncing the other way..
