Small plate in the recess I've heard, no first hand experience I'm afraid.

you need to weld a smal plate into the recess, this is dead easy, but if you want you can get it done by a welder for about ?10. Then fiberglas and/or filler over the top to get a smooth finnish. If you want a guide check out:

Its a good guide and the one i followed. piece of advice, dont do it on the one thats on your car, get one from a scrappy, set you back about ?15 and it dont really matter if you f**k it up. :P
Also the guide says to use galvanised metal! HMMM, not too good to weld galvanised metal!
after i did mine was told of a (sort of shortcut) rather than weld a normal metal plate in the recess, the top of the door skin id the same shape as the slight curve in the boot if you can get a good welder they should be able to line this up an weld it in place saving a load of finishing
