Today I fitted my ITG filter. I would have ideally liked a standard airbox and filter but because I can't get one to fit and the Corsa one I made was a propper bodge this was the only option.

I had to cut a bit off the end of the hose (inlet side) to get it to fit nicely and then drill a hole to fit the air temp sensor. I think it looks pretty nice compared to some filter setups but I just need to fit the rest of the red hoses as it looks a little out of place!

Engine bay looks nice now, you'll now be booting it everywhere for the induction noise lol
As for brakes, groves always twist outward from center to chuck out debris water etc, and imo dude I would think carefully about using that wheel, as that looks like bad damage, an could be an accident waiting to happen..

very wise words

i once had a wheel fall to bits at about 50mph with similar damage, could of been alot worse tbh, i would never use a wheel with a crack in it now

Only a small update. After bodging a top hose using Corsa/Nova hoses as we didn't have a Corsa GSi hose, without knowing it was toching the exhaust manifold slightly so on Sunday it decided to pee itself and drop all of it's water. Luckily, I had already purchased the Roose hoses so braved the cold and got just the one fitted. Once it warms up i'll get the rest fitted!

I also started working on the inside. Keeping with the black/flocked theme I decided to wrap my B pillars in suede. I didn't want to do the A and C pillars until I knew they it looked good. I think once I get my flocked door caps back and fitted and once I sort the rear door cards out (either carbon fibre or wrapped ali/plyboard) they'll look good and suit the rest. I would have got the lot flocked but it wouldn't really be worth the money as you won't see most of it all anyway once the cage is fitted.

Today I did a bit more to the Nova. Excuse the dirtiness but it's inevitable in this **** weather! ...

Since putting the engine in I have always had problems with the rocker cover leaking at the bolts. I have tried changing the rubber o-rings, both from a gasket set and then directly from Vauxhall with no success. I decided to have another try today so took the rocker cover off, thoroughly cleaned everything and put it all back together. This time I left the crankcase breather off in case it was blocked and building up pressure. I would have taken the pipe off and cleaned it out but it goes right to the back of the engine just below the inlet manifold so is inaccessible without being on a ramp. This seems to the problem as with the breather off it hasn't tried leaking! So, when I can get the chance of the use of a ramp I'll remove the hose and clean it out.

I also fitted my silicone bottom hose and header tank top hose. I thought that I could just use a normal silicone hose for the other header tank hose but can't as it won't bend enough without folding! So now i've got to order a "propper" hose which I shall do Monday. Then all I need is to sort the vacuum hoses out but I don't know whether to get them in red but then there may be too much red!

I'm in the process of getting a Bailey header tank which will top the bay off nicely. Also, when it get's warmer i'm going to sort the engine wiring out. As I know the engine is all running properly now I can start to remove the wires/plugs that are not needed, mainly the unsightly ones by the header tank / bottom hose. I'd also like to move the light wiring to the inner wing and move the start/charge loom from the passenger side of the bay to the drivers side (where the rest of the engine loom is slightly hidden).

I also fitted my flocked door cappings that I had done by Prey. Again, cannot, even slightly fault his work, it's excellent.

Also, the other day I noticed that the alternator wasn't charging so managed to get a new GM one from Vauxhall Car Parts for £35 delivered. Once it arrived I got it fitted to find that it wasn't the alternator in the end but the earth on the alternator! That will explain the green wires on the above pictures (temporary earth to battery). Whilst changing the alternator we noticed that the adjusting bracket had a also snapped but luckily was still tensioning the alternator. So i've ordered a new bracket and once that arrives we'll also sort the earth out at the same time.

The OZ's are now FOR SALE if anyone is interested as I am looking for a set of MO's... AGAIN!

The OZ's are now sold and i'm hopefully getting a set of 15" white MO's.

On another note, as it was sort of nice yesterday I done some work on the Nova.

Firstly, because I still had the air con fan left from the Corsa I decided to fit it to the Nova and replace the overly large standard one which looks poop.

I bought a fan fitting kit off eBay and set about getting it to fit. I managed to get it into a decent position were it wouldn't hit anything and got it fitted.

I then set about replacing the black vacuum hoses with red ones. I'm not 100% sure on these yet as I think it sort of makes the bay look a little messy wheras the black ones didn't stand out too much.

The green wires are just a temporary repair to earth the alternator.

The other day, the top adjusting bracket snapped but was still tensioning the alternator but wasn't earthing it. I've ordered a new bracket so once that comes I can get it fitted and remove the green wires.

I'm also having thoughts about getting another rocker cover and painting it crackle/wrinkle effect red? But then that may make it too much red...

Today was the day I decided to remove the sideskirts and see what was lurking behind them! Unfortunately there are a couple of small scabs in the drivers side cill and the bottom of the arch where it meets the cill on the passenger side has a few scabs/blisters. I'll have a proper look at "the situation" in the week and see what the bodyshop reckon!

Here's a couple of pictures with the sideskirts removed. With the new wheels I think it will look loads better than with them fitted!

Cheers mate, still a bit more work to do to it before it's exactly how I want it but it's getting there!

Anyway, I've been spending all of my money on the Nova again like usual...

My new wheels arrived today and I'm very happy with them! It's a set of 5 so I can keep one as a spare in the boot (if it fits!) which will look much better than the steel. The colour isn't to my taste but in the future I shall get them repainted. They are in MINT condition and have only just recently been powder coated. I've ordered some blue centre caps which should arrive any day soon.

I've also bought a set of red ignition leads to go with the red theme and also a can of VHT wrinkle/crackle paint to do a couple of bits.

Also, after receiving a damaged euro rear fog light from Germany I got a replacement one and got it fitted along with a standard rear.

I've also been having a think and will probably be getting the rust sorted along with repainting both rear quarters and both doors. I'm also going to fit a GSi rear spoiler, get the door handles painted red and possibly get the passenger door delocked.

The Nova has been booked in for paint late next week.

I've already started by removing the rear spoiler and have worked out exactly what i'm having done.

Both rear quarters and doors are having the rust sorted and painted as well as hopefully rolling the arches. I'm also having the boot resprayed as you can see below as well as a GSi spoiler. The door handles are being painted red, the passenger door lock is hopefully being removed and finally I shall most likely be fitting a single Astra GTE bonnet vent on the drivers side of the bonnet above the Aero Catch.

Once it's all painted I shall then decide whether to fit a rear wiper or not as the rear end may end up looking a bit plain and bland.

Whilst it's being painted I shall also be painted the inner arches red and fitting my front and rear window surrounds. I'm also going to have a look around for a top tint windscreen which should improve the looks of the car massively.

Anyway, back to today. I took the Nova to the body shop so he (Rob) could look round it and started by removing the rear spoiler. Now, when we attached it to the boot we didn't want it coming off so we made sure to apply copius amounts of Sikaflex which wasn't such a good idea! We knew that the boot would need painting anyway so wasn't bothered about damaging the paint. I don't have any pictures of the process of removal but after a fair bit of brute force and at one paint having the spoiler bent in half it was finally removed leaving a right mess.

looks better without a spoiler.

Are the comps 14" or 15"

I like the look without the spoiler too. gsi one will work well though. Are you going for a red or black spoiler? I'd leave the rear wiper off personally.

Cheers guys. The Comps are 15" and Simon, the spoiler will be going red.

Karl Rowntree's Nova above is where I got the idea from as it's probably one of my all time favourites (with the MO's instead of the Speedlines)

It will look spot on! Karls is my all time fave Nova! Although I've seen it many times, I've only just spotted lack of fuel cap lol!

Cheers for the comments, I think no spoiler looks better than the the old/current one but a Nova needs a spoiler otherwise it doesn't look right!

Anyway, i've been very busy over the past few days getting the Nova ready for paint. Something I've always wanted to do is paint the inner arches to protect them so seeing as I now have a unit and I can leave the Nova there I thought I may as well do it now before it get's painted.

I started by using a wire brush to clean the arches. Seeing as it was only dried mud it didn't take too much effort to get them clean. I then gave them a coat of red smooth Hammerite on yesterday and then left them overnight to dry before giving them another coat today.

Instead of babbling on I'll just upload all of the pictures:

Thanks for the comments guys!

Went down the unit after work to pick some bits up and decided to get the suspension back together.

I will probably be going back over there tomorrow after work and trial fitting the MO's and getting back on the ground.

My original plans where to paint the brake drums and calipers red when painting the inner arches but I had an idea of getting them painted the same yellow/green colour as the rocker cover. I'm undecided really...

Thanks again for comments! Edd, I want them to stand out and I think I need some more yellow so the rocker cover doesn't look out of place. I'll have a think!

Anyway, went down again today and got it back on it's wheels. Decided to trial fit the MO's and now I don't know whether to keep them silver get them done in anthracite or a matte anthracite...

After fitting the GAZ shocks yesterday I've since removed them today and refitted the GMAX ones as I have sourced a set of reasonably cheap Spax RSX coilovers that I'll be fitting when they arrive. So. i'll now be selling the Gaz shocks.

My Spax RSX coilovers also turned up today so once it's back from the bodyshop I'll get them fitted.

I've also always wanted the back lower and with the rear stripped out would probably need 110mm springs. Now, these would not be ideal as they will fall out etc and I would need new rear shocks as one is starting not to work so have looked at getting some GAZ rear coilovers.

When I get paid next, or when I've sold the GAZ shocks and Magnum seats I think I'll be getting myself a set so I can run it pretty damn low!!!

With this **** English weather, it's inevitable!!! lol

Ideally, I'd like to get a new radiator but at the moment would rather spend the money elsewhere. It does what it needs to do at the moment and once the bumper and grill or on you won't even see!

Haven't updated for a couple of days as i've been flat out busy and just haven't had the time to update.

Anyway, I went down the bodyshop on Friday and made a start. I firstly set about grinding the rust down/out and soon became very disheartened and pissed off! Before I owned the Nova it must have sustained some sort of damage to the rear quarter as there was no actual metal in the bottom half of the rear quater, just fiberglass!!! What makes it worse is the fact the whoever done the repairs must have fibreglassed over rust as when I removed the fibreglass there was a nice load of rust on the inner arch hiding behind it. I'll let the pictures do the talking:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/10043_10151388891236451_148529889_n.jpg

After vandalizing the rear arch I then moved on to the bottom of the doors. Luckily the rust wasn't too bad and it was cut out and new pieces of metal were welded in. I don't have any pictures of before but just some once complete and filler was applied (This was when I went down on Wednesday). I also rolled the rear arches whilst I was at it just in case I run wider wheels or require spacers with the rear coilovers etc.

Then yesterday I started by rubbing down the filler and also after multiple measurements I drilled the holes for the GSi spoiler. Luckily I had a boot lid with the holes already there so just made measurements using that. I then trial fitted to make sure it fitted correctly.

A new panel was made up to replace the rotten piece on the inner inner arch (or whatever it is). There's no pictures but the old rusty part was cut out and the new piece welded in.

That was it for today welding wise. I have been looking for a top tint windscreen for a while now but managed to get one from a local windscreen fitter. After asking him, he said that he could get a new one fitted for £120 or he had a couple of old ones that I could have for £50 fitted. He told me that years ago he used to work opposite a bloke who used to race Nova's so he had all the screens out of them. Anyway, he came along today and got it fitted for me. Looking at it, it looks like a bronze tint screen. I think it looks much better now with a top tint windscreen!

Then when I got home my day was made, my new GAZ rear coilovers had turned up! I decided on the ultra low versions as I am looking to run around 100-110mm. I just can't wait to get it back and get all the new bits fitted.

Unfortunately though, the head gasket has gone... So once it's back from the bodyshop it will be off the road for a tad longer whilst I get that sorted. Never mind!!!

are you going to sell the shocks like everything else you buy? lol lol

Liam
19-04-13, 11:03 PM
Hopefully not lol. My plans are always changing and everything I buy that I end up selling, I mostly always get really cheap so sell it on and make money on it. I then use that money to buy better things that I couldn't afford if I hadn't of bought and sold the other things...

I then end up with decent stuff that doesn't actually cost me much.

Very complicated business that lol lol lol

Is that a clear front screen you have? I remember Connor telling me about a guy that had some old screens who fitted them too. Said he may have a bronze one but ended up being green. That would be a perfect substitute for mine. Any info can you pm me.

Some pictures from the last couple of days. It's now in primer so will hopefully get painted late next week.

Also, I/we have decided that the best option with the car is to give it a full exterior respray in Vauxhall Flame red. I've never really liked the colour red the car is at the moment as it's a bit dark whereas Flame red is a nice shade. Also, seeing as it's only the bonnet and roof that aren't being painted it would be easier just to paint them as well so that the paint matches 100% etc.

Thanks again Mark! As you say, it should look really nice and fresh once painted ready for the show season!

I went down today to get the rest of the car rubbed down ready for paint. When it came to the wings I noticed that the N/S one had actually been rusting away from the inside out and had started to rust under the paint!

So now I've had to fork out even more money on this pile of **** of an excuse of a car on a new wing which should hopefully arrive in time to be painted with the rest of the car on Friday! lol lol

You've got to love a good old Nova ay!

I thought you resprayed this when you got it, so why dose it now need panels and paint?

Liam
30-04-13, 11:59 PM
Well when it first got sprayed it didn't have any rust. I have since used it as a daily through the winter so that's the reason there's rust on the doors and rear arch. I hadn't undersealed the car so it's my fault really.

Same thing with the wing, I bought it second hand and didn't touch the inside of it.

What's made it worse with the rear arch is that it had a previous repair and the arch had been filled with fibreglass over rust. This wasn't noticeable at first until the rust behind the fibreglass started to come though which then led me to explore!

It was probably made worse with the sideskirts trapping water etc.

This time around the first thing I'm going to do is underseal/secure/seal all areas required...

Not an update I was expecting.... :( I got a text today saying that the paint oven is currently broken and until that is fixed the Nova won't be painted. He said that hopefully it should be fixed sometime next week and MAYBE the Nova will be painted then :(:(.

It's starting to get worrying close to the date of PVS as there's still a fair few jobs to do once painted including putting everything back together, head gasket, repaint inner arches, rear brakes/shoes, paint brakes, CV boots, tidy engine bay + lots more!

Here's the pictures I took today. I'm going up tomorrow to get the glass back in and window surrounds, bumpers, boot, wings on etc.

Unfortunately they ran out of paint so couldn't do the spoiler, grill, wing mirrors etc so once the paint has arrived these bits will be done.

I have also packed my Waxoyl in the car ready to do the inside of the wings and doors, front panel etc etc.

The car will also be polished tomorrow to get the minor blemishes out and get it looking like a mirror finish!

Also, who can spot the minor change/differennce that I haven't showed before. (Hint = it's to do with something that's not a part of the car itself but something that bolts to it.)

Side repeaters removed? How do you go on with the mot with it?

It looks great freshly painted. I hope the guy doing mine at the moment does it exactly like this rather than spray all the bits while still attached to the car!

Yes the side repeaters have been removed and its all about who you know!

Regards the paint, I asked to have the bits removed and removed them myself. It really depends if they can be bothered to unbolt everything as its just easier to mask a couple of bits up!

I got my indicators smoothed off on my old track car, you legally can with a mk2 as the front indicators come round the side of the wings, but only easy model mk1's that had none from factory are ok, otherwise it's an mot fail.
Did you do it royal mail red again or something else lol

Cheers mate.

Well got a fair bit done today. Got all of the glass fitted as well as the boot, wings and bumpers. I did try and fit my window surrounds but soon found out that they don't fit as they are well and truely bent and out of shape! So now I'm looking for a another pair that actually fit!

I had to get the car watertight so just refitted the rear windows. Once I find some then I'll just remove the windows and fit them again.

Once the car was outside you really could see the difference in colour! The previous red was very dark and dull and now it's very bright and very shiny! You can see the difference between the wings and front panel which hasn't been painted.

The car still hasn't been mopped yet so the finish is an 'out of the gun' finish. I can't wait till it's mopped as it'll look even shinier!

Cheers guys!

Southie, it really is a 'standout' red at the moment even before mopping and polishing etc!

Chris, I think all Nova's should have rear window surrounds as it just makes them look soo much better as they flow with the lines of the car etc.

I went down today and got the front and rear coilovers fitted. The fronts fitted easily but the backs required a slight bit of work before they would fit. The coilover springs were touching the bottom of the inner wing slightly so a slight tap with the hammer sorted that out!

After looking at other peoples experience with coilovers I thought that I would have to get some spacers for the front but I don't which is a result!

Here's some pictures I took today. I'm happy with the rear height but I think the front needs to go down a tad more.

I'm just waiting on the other parts to be painted then I can get them fitted.

I'd get a close look at those rear spring seats and clean them up before the start to get rotten ;)

Yes I did notice that when it was up on the ramp. I had a good look underneath and they seem to be the only bits which require attention! Will get them sorted when I waxoyl inside the doors and rear quaters etc.

Did you try lifting /jacking the beam up slightly when fitting the rear coilovers?
As when the beam moves up into its static position the coilovers should clear fine, I thought this on my first nova, but now I know most will clear.

Looking good though dude.

Cheers Scott. We did see if they would clear with the car at "normal/static" height but they were still catching very slightly. They only need a slight tap each side so it's not too bad.

Anyway, Friday I went and fitted the other bits that had been painted. I fitted the door handles, spoiler, wing mirrors and grill. I was supposed to get the lock surrounds painted as well but somehow they were lost but found after the other bits had been painted, typical! They will be painted soon but I just fitted them for now.

I've still got to sort the grill slats out as the one that was in/on the grill was broken. I've got one on an old broken grill so will get it fitted before PVS.

My dad then collected the Nova on Friday evening and finally it was home!

Yesterday I went to visit Connor (again) to change the tyres over on the MO's and fit the T1R's.

Today i'm moving it into the garage and will be starting the removal of the head ready for the replacement head gasket. I'm just hoping the head doesn't need skimming as it will then leave me with not much time before PVS.

There's just a few more bits to do but i'll get there eventually.

Today we moved the Nova into the garage and started on the head gasket.

Luckily, it looks like there was a slight weep between one of the waterways and one of the pistons so there's nothing wrong with the head. I shall be cleaning the head and block up tomorrow and will get it all back together on Tuesday hopefully!

I can then get other bits sorted like lowering the front more, installing my helper springs to the rear coilovers that GAZ forgot to supply (until I contacted them and they sent them out), give it a decent clean inside and out and a couple of other bits.

I got a couple of pictures of it in the sun before it was put into the garage and I must say it's looking stunning lol... It's starting to become the car I wanted it to be and it's not far off!

OK, last week was very, very hectic trying to get the Nova ready for PVS. Finally, at 9:30pm on Friday it was finished ready for the drive up at 9:00am on Saturday morning....

On Tuesday we set about getting the head gasket fitted and getting everything back together. I also spent a good few hours tidying up the engine bay wiring and wrapping most of it in fabric loom tape. I also fitted new exhaust manifold studs and nuts as well as some 8mm red silicone leads.

Once it was all back together we started it up to find that it was misfiring. Now, when putting the leads back on (the old ones which were on the car before the head gasket was done) we put them on the order everywhere says, 1-3-4-2. After moving them around a bit we managed to get it running without misfiring in the order 1-4-2-3. This is/was really weird and we have no idea why this is? (That's why in the pictures below you can see that one lead is tight and the other is really loose/too long.

After that was sorted, we noticed that the engine was lagging like it was when we first put the engine in. Because the fuel filter was at fault before I ordered one straight away. Once it arrived we got it fitted and that fixed that problem. I think the reason the fuel filter got clogged up again is because I let it run pretty dry on fuel so it must have sucked some **** up from the tank.

Once we knew everything was sorted and the car was running right we changed the oil as well as the filter.

I took the Nova for a quick drive and all was good. It was then ready for its 300 mile round trip to Santa Pod! I really wanted to take it down the strip on the Saturday but being as it had just had a new head gasket I just wanted to take it easy! There's always next year...

Here's some pictures of when I was getting it ready and on the stand at PVS...

Mazz, that's something I've been looking at for a while but I just don't have the money to spend on one at the moment. Having a look, I can get a 6 digit plate with my initials for £245 but at the moment I'd rather spend that money elsewhere!

No updates since PVS except cleaning it... Although I keep thinking about selling it and buying something RWD like an S13 180sx/200sx or an E30 BMW, but then when I get in the Nova and 'drive it' I fall in love with it again!

Today, I decided to test out my GoPro camera by attaching it the Nova on my way to the workshop. I haven't actually heard the car from outside so it was great to see what it sounded like. It's not as nice as my friends Corsa with a stainless system but it's still nice sounding, I even managed to get it to backfire a couple of times! :d

The video is currently being uploaded to YouTube so once it's done I'll post it on here.

Here's some pictures (artistic iPhone fail) of before and after cleaning it...

Since installing the single wiper i've never liked the use of a grommet in the hole where the other wiper should be as it just looked temporary.

I came up with an idea a couple of weeks ago to make use of the hole and make it look useful/needed so purchased a T pull cable and a battery cut off switch.

Today, whilst waiting for a couple of things I decided to give it a go and see if my plan 'worked'. I got a couple of very large repair washers and used them with the pull cable to achieve the below. At the moment it is not connected to anything but when I get some spare time, I'll install the cut off switch in the scuttle somewhere and connect the two together. I think it looks much better than a grommet and adds to the semi-motorsport theme.

I also forgot to add that I fitted my fire extinguisher today as well! I've always had one in the car but it's always just been in the back and I thought I may as well fit it securely somewhere I can get to it quickly.

After looking at a couple of places I deiced to fit it in front of the passenger seat and attach the frame using the seat subframe bolts. It sits very nicely and doesn't get in the way. You can move the seat over it with clearance and doesn't get in the way of feet.

Over the past couple of weeks I've been having thoughts about selling the Nova and buying something RWD, mainly something like an S13 180sx/200sx.

Over the past few days it's been getting worse and I even started to consider creating a for sale ad!

I think i'm just getting to the stage where everything 'affordable' has been done and I'm just getting bored of it. It drives crap and the ride is crap which really doesn't help it lollol

I would love to keep it and just use it as a weekend/track car but now having no job means this won't be happening in the forseeable future.

I think I need to have a long hard think about what to do really...

Not at the moment as it was repaired when I wasn't there. I'd be able to get some from inside though if I defiantly decide to sell.

be a shame to let it go mate, but if you don't want to go to that next stage maybe moving on is a good idea

If you're thinking like that then it's time to put it in the garage away for a few months, then try it again and see what you think..

I'd absolutely love to do that Scott but it's my daily car and I can't afford a second car at the moment.

What makes things even harder is the fact I've just been quoted £1,400 to insure an S13 200sx 1.8 turbo. That's me as the main driver (19 years old) and both my parents as named drivers. Fully comp, 0 NCB, 1 years experience etc...

I do really need to think hard about what to do now.

Seeing as the Nova won't be going for a short while anyway (if I do sell it that is) I decided to make my journey up to Billing a bit more exciting than PVS.

Seeing as I wanted to stay with the track look I wanted to install a stereo but didn't want to put it back in the normal place. I wanted it hidden and with the Calibra dials in the normal "stereo" place I bought a stereo enclosure and installed it in the glovebox.

It was very easy to do as the wires where more than long enough and I only had to cut a couple of small holes in the back of the glovebox for the wires. I installed a KA aerial up in behind the a pillar and for now put the original dash speakers back in.

I'd like a bit better sound so was thinking of installing some 6.5" speakers in the dash shelves facing down so the wires etc are at the top facing up. I think this is the only place as I don't want to be cutting holes in the door cards etc.

I also had an idea of buying some 6x9 enclosures and putting them behind the seats. I think this will look a bit temporary and I don't think the 6x9's would work too well like that. If anyone has any ideas then please let me know.

Yesterday I set about lowering the rear of the car a bit more. When I fitted the helper springs it raised it up a bit and was then sitting too high. After lowering the car to it's lowest setting with the helper springs still in, it was still sitting too high. I then removed the helper springs and put it back down on the lowest setting.

After putting the wheels back on and rolling the car backwards and forwards a couple of times it didn't settle and was still sitting high. After driving it back from the workshop home like that, when I got home it had settled and was sitting way to low lol.

Now I know what I'm working with, when I get time I'll raise it up until I get the height I want.

KA aerial sounds interesting, any pics?

It's nothing special, just an external/bee-sting aerial that I took off a KA my dad was breaking... It doesn't work though as it doesn't get enough signal.

I decided that I needed to do something to the Nova before Billing so decided to fit the rear window surrounds I had. I've currently got 3 sets, all were described as mint and they are all far from it. I've been looking for a mint set for a while but haven't been able to find any. So, I decided to fit the best ones I had temporarily until I find some more.

I've also got a full set of front window surrounds to fit but haven't got the l shaped seals/rubbers. I'm picking some up at Billing, so once I get them i'll get the fronts fitted as well. I also raised the back up to height I'm happy with, just need to lower the front a tad more.

I've also been thinking about changing the colour of the wheels. I'm not really sure on a colour but it would either be white, a light anthracite or a grey, very slightly bronze matte.

Since I've had the MO's I've never really liked the silver as I feel it lets the wheels down a bit. I've been having a play and decided on either anthracite or with a hint of bronze. I'm slightly towards the bronze as it goes with the red better... What's peoples opinions?

(Don't say white as I've done a Photoshop and i'm not overly keen due to the black bumpers. I've also darkened the window surrounds as they look a little too grey.)

I'd go for the dark grey, and also paint window surrounds, bumpers, grill slats and anything else you fancy that was black, dark grey... it really ties the whole car together imo, but then I also like white wheels on red lol

Ignore the shoddy body paint work, but yeah;

his made 130bhp unsure weather that was flywheel or wheels

Liam

As Connor said, on Saturday I went over to SVA Imports for their open day. I decided I may as well get the Nova dyno'd so I can give a reply to people when they ask what power it's running.

It made 129bhp at the wheels which I think is a bit optimistic. I shall be getting it dyno'd with a friends Corsa x14xe on bike carbs later this month or next month so we shall see then.

The feedback I got was that it drops in torque/power massively after 5,000rpm which is strange as these engines normally have power right up to the limiter. Anyway, the cause of this was soon found out as it was running rather low on fuel! When we left it had no power but once filled up with fuel it was fine again, fine enough to play with an e36 323i BMW lol.

At least I know to actually have some petrol in the tank before the next dyno lollol

I think i've also made up my mind about the Nova. Once I find a job (got made redundant the other week), i'm going to start saving for another car and once I purchase one i'll store the Nova and use it a 'weekend car'. The reason I don't want to sell it now is because I know that I will regret it badly. Plus it's a clean shell and I know how it's all been done.

On Monday I fitted my rear GTE/GSi/TD anti roll bar and lowered the front of the car a bit more. I can't believe the difference and how much better the car performs with one fitted. I'm shocked they weren't fitted from standard to all Novas' really!

I know, I've been wanting to do them along with the fronts for ages! It's just i'll have to leave the car for a while to wait for the paint to dry and can't really do it out in the road. I might give it a go tomorrow whilst it's hot outside as the paint might dry a little quicker.

Cheers as always guys!

Been very busy the last few days so didn't manage to get many small jobs sorted. I did however manage to get the brake reservoir cover fitted along with replacing one of the main bulbs on my digi-dash/speedo (meaning taking half of the dash apart!).

I've bought a stainless steel oil catch tank and some red silicone hose so once all them bits arrive I'll get it fitted.

I've also had a thought of getting another rocker cover, painting it with wrinkle/crackle paint and then getting the body shop to spray it the same colour as the current one. I think it'll look much better and give it a bit more character as well.

(Really need to polish my header tank!)

I also remembered I also had my GoPro in my camera bag so decided to stick it on the back of the Nova and go through the tunnel. I tried to make it flame but it didn't!:cry:

Great pics of the cars! What exhaust are you running Liam and how many silencers does it have?

Simon, it's a full Ashley 2" mild steel system with a middle and rear silencer. It's for an GTE so the cat has also been removed and it bolts up to (after a bit of cutting and shutting) a Sportex 4-2-1 manifold. I'd love to get a stainless Piper system like you've got but couldn't justify the cost at the moment.

SimonTW
06-08-13, 04:10 PM
I ended up sending it back. Piper told me the tailpipe came straight out of the bumper but it comes out an an angle so I'm stuck with my 3 silencer system on there. The quality of the Piper one is great though. If the GTE system they do exits straight then I'll have one of them instead. I was worried about a 2 silencer system being very loud but after hearing yours I think it will be spot on!

Liam

See that's why I want a Piper exhaust because of the way the tailpipe exits at an angle. I've been looking and they seem to be about £420-£440, I take it that's what you paid if you don't mind me asking? I take it you mean like this:

Yeah that's pretty much the one I have been sent. From what they have told me (after the inital mess up) the SR one kicks out at an angle but the GTE one comes straight out. Then the other difference is the bend at the downpipe end is different.

Done a couple of little bits over the past few days.

Firstly, when I first bough the Nova I also bought a fuel filler cap. I didn't/haven't fitted it because it all went a bit manky so I decided to spray it matte black. I'm not too sure on the way it looks but I think it looks much better than the standard grey one.

I also finally ordered myself an oil catch tank to stop the oil leaking/dripping from the rocker cover hole down the block (I couldn't connect up the hose as I have a Dbilas inlet fitted). I didn't want the cheap £20 'normal' eBay catch tank but wasn't going to pay £90+ for a Mocal one. After having a search, I came across the one that I've bought for £26 delivered which is only a couple of quid more than the cheap ones. I think it looks much better and ties in with the shiny engine bay bits.

After spending hours looking for the right place to mount it, I finally decided on where the washer bottle used to be as it looked a little plain in that area. So, I used a new alternator bracket I had lying around, cut the end off it and bonded it (using the metal bonding stuff) to the bottom of the strut brace. I couldn't find my sharp blade to cut the hose to length so just put it on for now. It needs shortening a little but I'll do that when I find something to cut it with.

If oil is dripping from the tube and running down the block would it not just pool in the lowest point in the tube as there is no vacuum pulling the gases through?

The cars looking very clean Liam as for exhausts could you not have a custom one made. I had one made for mine it's a 2 box system the back box is a big as it could be so its nice and quiet (a sign of getting old) and the tail pipe comes out straight and cost £250 fitted with life time warranty

Not a big update but an update at least!

Gary kindly made me up a spark plug cover and I quickly got it sorted and fitted. I did think about polishing it up or painting it but decided to go the easy and more affordable route and vinyl wrap it. I purchased some of that new 4D carbon wrap on eBay and got the cover wrapped. I also added an SBD sticker to it as it was looking a bit bland.

I also purchased an oil cap off eBay and try and make a 'custom' one using the original black insert one. After measuring the inside of the black cap, I searched for a 'screw type' cap with about the side thread diameter and got one ordered. Once it arrived I just bonded/glued the new cap inside the original black one and *tada* I now have a custom oil cap!

I then turned my search to eBay again and got myself some countersunk bolts and red anodized countersunk washers to replace the rocker cover ones. I think these look much better than the original ones I had and tie in well with the oil cap and hoses etc.

I've also had thoughts of changing the front end back to mk2 and fitting a GSi bumper. The GTE/SR front end is OK but I just love the GSi front. I've still got my original wings and lights etc so would just need them painting and then get hold of a GSi bumper and grill. The only thing is, I really like the look of the rear of the car but don't know whether the front GSi and GTE rear bumpers will go? I'd probably get the bumpers done in an anthracite colour if I decide to go ahead with it. What's people's thoughts?

The 4D smells like real carbon too.

Sorry, didn't see your reply until today.

The 4D carbon is textured differently (curved but straight) and when the sun or light hits it, it turns glossy looking like real lacquered carbon fibre. It also looks more realistic out of the light than the 3D stuff.

On to today...

I spent a little while on the Nova today after neglecting it for a couple of weeks and having thoughts of selling up and getting something AGAIN! I've had a think and once I get a job (made redundant in June!) I think I'll have more of an interest in the car and save up for some throttle bodies and other goodies like I originally planned to.

But whilst having no money, there isn't much I can do! A few months ago now I purchased a stainless steel heat shield for an XE/LET and never tried fitting it, until today. It wasn't too bad a job and I only had to drill one new hole. As there's no mounting points on the head itself I had to use the two outer exhaust manifold studs/bolts. I replaced all four of the top studs with bolts and used a spacer between the manifold and heat shield (also longer bolts) on the outer ones so they clear the inner bolt heads. It's a vast improvement and covers up the flaky manifold where the heat temperature paint flaked off under heat.

Not a lot been happening lately but have managed to tidy up the engine bay a bit more. I decided to paint my thermostat housing and wiper motor/backing plate in VHT wrinkle paint. I've managed to pick up a spare rocker cover so will be wrinkle painting that and then getting it painted yellow again.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/1266532_10151663173211451_1414964407_o.jpg

I also removed the header tank the other day and took it down to get polished on a proper polisher. Should be ready to fit late next week and will look much better than it being full of water stains and small scratches.

To try and tidy up the rear window surrounds until I can find a mint set a decided to spray them satin black (fronts will be painted and fitted soon!). They look good but not ideal. But as I said, they will do for now! Whilst I had the paint it I also decided to quickly spray up a spare grill in gloss black to see what it looked like. After some reassuring feedback, I'm going to be getting it professionally sprayed gloss black when I get my other bits done which brings me onto the following.

After having a word with the bodyshop, he said that he would give me hand fit my cage and make all of the spreader plates and platforms. He's currently in the middle of having a baby any day now so should hopefully be able to get the car down and get it fitted in about a week or so time. Whilst it's down there i'm going to see if I can get the interior painted the same colour as the engine bay and remove all of the carpets etc. I'll also get my rear brace fitted at the same time.

Also, he's some pictures of how the engine bay currently is. Just need to do and fit my new rocker cover and then it should be pretty much finished... Until I get some Jenvey throttle bodies!

As Connor has said, the Nova was put away in October for the winter and to do some bits to it. I've been buying and collecting lots of parts over the past few months and will be doing bits to it very soon.

I actually worked on it for the first time since it went away today, getting the interior partly stripped ready for the cage to be fitted/welded in. Once that is done I shall be taking it to the bodyshop and getting the inside painted the same colour as the engine bay (anthracite). I'll also get the cage painted as well but not sure whether to go matt black (original colour), anthracite (same colour as inside) or red (same colour as the car?).

Then, when it's back i'll get it up on axle stands and remove everything underneath. I'll then get the floor undersealed and painted and get everything powdercoated red/black. I'm also going to be fitting polybushes throughout which I bought a couple of weeks ago.

I'm also on the lookout for a mint drivers door as mine is starting to rust again everywhere! Or, I'm contemplating getting some fiberglass ones from Chris at CMComposites?

If your going with grey, keep the colours to red and grey. Matt black will look toss.

GRey floor with a red cage would look cool.
Is it gonna be all stripped out and caged up look then...

I had a grey floor and black cage in mine before i painted the floor red. Looked rubbish grey tbh. Why not just paint the floor red and leave the cage black?

Pic of mine! ;)

That's what I was thinking, plus it'd be easier to just paint it grey rather than masking it all off etc. But then red would look cool too. Hmmmm!!!

And yes, going for the caged up, basic look. Getting the bare dash flocked so will have a fully flocked dash, full carbon interior panels etc.

I'm not to sure why I want to go anthracite really lol I think it's because the engine bays the same colour and it would tie in with that. Plus with the red seats, it'll probably be a little too much?

It's a Safety Devices bolt in cage but i'm getting it welded in to save the hassle of drilling holes and bolting in it. So unfortunately not :(

Although, I could get it painted and then respray the feet once it's been welded in? I'll see what the body shop say!

Thanks for positive feedback! At the start of the project I was young (16) and didn't have any ideas on what I wanted to do with the car... lol lol

I will be at Billing, yes. I shall also be at PVS and maybe RetroRides Gathering depending on if I go to Nurburgring in the Nova or not!!

The main reason I decided to paint my bay anthracite is if I decide later on to change the colour of the colour (which is rather likely in say 2-3 years!). That's why I'd also like to get the inside painted the same, plus it ties in with the rally/track look!!

A quick little update!

I stripped the rest of the inside ready for the cage fitting and painting. I'm debating on whether to remove the headlining as well but not too sure yet! I've got to decide quickly though as the cage is being fitted on Sunday!!

I also set about removing the radiator and middle support bracket (should make installation of the new one easier and non-damaging with the exhaust manifold still in place) ready for the new GSi/GTE full height replacement.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t31/1500936_10151905481556451_98052917_o.jpg

And finally, I also got together all the bits I've been collecting for the Nova over the past 3-4 months. When it's back from paint, then I'll crack on with the underside and get everything fitted!!

Nice little collection. Are you planning on doing the whole underside and up in the arches with the Gravitex? If so you will need a bit more. I used 5,5l on mine.

Also, trial fit both of the seats. I bought and sold a set of Pro2000's as they were too wide for the car.

Cheers for the positive comments guys! Don't worry, i'm about to update now and there should hopefully be a fair few more in the coming weeks!!

Stonechipping the underside after paint! Sounds scary! Nice collection of parts, I like the cage gusset things

Cheers. It shouldn't be too scary. I'll make sure all of the exterior paintwork is covered up beforehand. I would have liked to have done it before it was painted but it was all a bit of rush! That's the only thing with it being a daily! But since October it hasn't been so I can spend more time on it. My only deadlines are the summer shows and a sneeky 'little' photoshoot...

I shall only be doing the underside so hopefully should be OK!! The arches were hammerited last year so as far as I am concerned they're fine. I did think about that with the seats as they do look a little wide!! If they don't fit it won't be a problem as it means I'll be able to sell them on and make a hefty profit!! I would ideally like a nice set of black/red Cobra Imolas but they hardly come up for sale in near mint condition and I can't afford NEW prices.

Plans sound good

Thanks! I'm not sure what make it is but it is for sale anyway! The bloke who welded my cage plates in has made me one out of T45 tubing so the ally one has no use now!!

Ok right, been fairly busy the past couple of weeks!!

Firstly, I received my Mocal oil cooler, sandwich plate and fittings.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/t31/1529747_10151928775081451_1396466485_o.jpg

Then it was time to get the car ready to have the cage fitted / spreader plates made and welded in.

So first I set about removing the underseal and sound deadening from the top/bottom where the cage will sit.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/t31/1888846_10151928774346451_1284522999_o.jpg

I then got a friend to come over and make some spreader plates for the cage and weld them all in. He's been doing rally/rallycross cars all his life and has worked for the likes of Will Gollop and Ford M Sport so knows his stuff!! He's also built a fair few Nova rally cars in his time including a a couple or 3 genuine Sports!!

Anyway, I helped him out and we set about making the plates.

That's all for now!! The Nova was booked in to have the inside and bits painted this week but the cage took a little longer than expected. So, over the next few evenings I'll spend some time prepping the inside ready for paint. Hopefully, within the next week or two it should be ready for paint. I can then get it back, get the cage painted and fitted and then tackle the underside under sealing, painting and powder coating parts!!

I had no college today so decided to get all of the sound proofing residue off. I first smothered it all in white spirits and let it all soak for a couple of monutes. I then went over it all lightly with a scraper and only needed to put pressure on a couple of bits.

Should hopefully start rubbing it down during the evening and should then be ready for paint sometime next week.

Ok, I really should update this more often but never get the time!

Anyway, the Nova is booked in to have the inside and other bits painted on the 28th of this month. Now, the first car show of the car (BHP Show at Lydden Hill) is the following Monday so god knows whether the Nova will be there lol

Firstly, following on from my last update I got my dashboard and other bits back from being flocked by Prey. Again, he has a splendid job and I would highly recommend him and his work!

This then brings us to last Saturday where I managed to bring the Nova down to where I work, get it up on the 2 post ramp and underseal the underside. I decided to go for Gravitex black. The underside was actually pretty good with no actual rust, just a bit of surface here and there. To be honest, I only Gravitex'd it to freshen it up a bit and make it all look a little neater!

Here's some pictures of how it went:

Whilst it was up on the ramp I also took the chance to drain the oil, fit a new magnetic sump plug and oil filter and plumb in my oil cooler with the thermostat sandwich plate. I also got some decent quality brackets and got the oil cooler mounted up too.

Luckily, I've got over Easter off so I've made up a list of things to do before it goes into paint. These include painting the rear beam, fuel tank, arches and brakes. Filling up with new oil and water/antifreeze (and get it running after 5-6 months!), making up new fuel tank hoses, painting the exhaust and lots of little jobs.

The other night I removed the tie bars, bottom arms and removed the bushes today ready to send off for powder coating. When I get them back, I'll get them fitted along with fitting the new poly bushes and track rod ends/tie bars/bottom ball joints.

I'll report back tomorrow with how it goes! Hopefully I get a fair bit done as I've only got about 2 and a bit weeks to get it all done!

looking very very nice though Liam, so what's next to do once you've got it running? Any other improvements or parts your putting on.

Cheers guys! It's a bummer with the tank strap. Hopefully I can straighten it out a little bit. I only done it moving it from one workshop to the other and forgot they dragging on the floor!!

Southie, once it's all done and everything is fitted I shall be stopping for a while. I'll be getting it featured in Total Vauxhall once it's done and then start saving for an E30 BMW. Once my finances change though, i'll start looking at throttle bodies which would complete my 'plan' for the Nova.

Cheers guys! Managed to get a little bit done today.

Yesterday I painted the fuel tank so today when it was dry I replaced the old, split fuel filler pipes with some fluro silicone hose.

I'll finish off painting it tomorrow and tick off some more jobs that need doing! I've ordered everything to do a secondary rear ARB including a Cavalier ARB so will fit all of that when I get them before I fit the polybushes and refit the beam. I also gave the exhaust a quick paint up in high temp paint so will get that fitted back up tomorrow and hopefully get it back running!

Right, so the past couple of days have been very busy as Connor (Conza) came round and give me a hand on Friday after work and today.

We managed to replace the tie rods and track rod ends along with new gaiters. We also fitted new braided brake hoses, painted and refited the brake calipers, painted the rear drums, polybush'd the rear beam, made new and fitted rear brake pipes, fitted new handbrake cables, refitted exhaust, fitted the rear beam and get most things bolted up.

I also had/have a bit of a dilemma with the tie bars/bottom arms but luckily Connor came to the rescue with that! Mine are currently away being powder coated and won't be ready until the later part of next week. Now, the car is being towed to be painted on Monday, hmmmm....

Luckily though, Connor's new Nova is being parked up for a while so we 'borrowed' the parts off that and will return then when I get my parts back lol

We would have got the car rolling today but we had to stop early as I had to go out! All that is left to do is fit the rear braided brake hoses and bleed the system. We also noticed that one of the rear wheel cylinders is also leaking ever so slightly so I'll replace them before putting the new brake fluid in too!!

Enjoy...

Ok, so today I connected up the rear brake hoses, sorted a couple of small things and got it back on it's wheel and on the ground. Tomorrow morning it's going down to have the inside painted anthracite (same colour as the bay) as well as the roll cage. The bumpers will be redone again as they have some marks on them here and there. I'll also be getting my wrinkle painted rocker cover painted the same yellow as the current one.

Here's a couple more pictures from yesterday and today:

OK, an update seeing as I actually have a small amount of free time!

Firstly, I finally found somewhere that managed to lathe the inside of my Comps down to accept centre caps like they should be! Only the spare has been done at the moment so I'll get the tyres off the rest and then get the wheels painted bronze once they've all been done.

Love that grey on the cage and insides. You should do your bumpers in that colour.
Insides look great! Love the flocking.

Looking great this, as benn said that interior colour would be smart for the bumpers. Can't wait to see it finished.

Cheers for the comments guys! I really am pleased with the interior and it's much better than what I thought it was going to turn out like which is ever better!!

Benn, I was thinking of going that colour with the bumpers but then though against it. People know the car with the gloss black bumpers so I'll leave it this year. You never know, the outside may even be a different colour next summer... ;)

Ok, I'll give a little update too whilst I'm here!!

Since the last update i've done a fair few small updates including fitting a remote central locking kit with remote boot popper etc and harness eye bolts/spreader plates.

As you'll be able to see from the pictures below, I decided to sell the Sparco Pro2000's and purchase myself a set of brand new Corbeau Club Sport seats. I didn't actually intend on getting new seats but after sitting in them at a local car show with a Corbeau stand I fell in love with them. They're new compared to the Sparco's so I don't have to worry about the fabric ripping due to wear and they are also more suited to the way I like to sit etc and are easier to get in and out of!

Luckily, the Nova sub frames didn't need modifying and after a little elongating of the side mount holes, I got them fitted to the sub frames. I decided to put runners on the drivers seat in case other people want to drive and mount the passenger seat side mounts directly to the sub frame so it doesn't move.

The seats fit an absolute treat and just about miss the side bars of the cage!

After fitting the seats I decided to get the old girl out and give her a gentle drive around the private roads, which is why I remembered why I done all of this and how it was/is all worth it!!

All I am waiting on now is for my bumpers to be painted and the rear strut brace too. I can then get it MOT'd and start using it!!

P.S. My fiberglass doors and carbon interior panels are also nearly finished so I should have them soon hopefully. I'm not sure whether I could have them fitted and painted for PVS in time so I may be turning up with some slightly rusty doors. Oh well!!

P.S.S. I'm also thinking of getting some polycarbonate windows for when I get the doors which should bring the weight down a little nicely!

Right, tomorrow is the day! I've booked it in for an MOT at 1pm and then having it 4 wheel aligned on a hunter system straight after.

i went yesterday and picked my bumpers up from being painted. They've been painted Mercedes metallic black, but only slightly metallic. They look sweet! I'll get them fitted this evening and get some pictures!

i also picked up my rear strut brace too. It hasn't been painted yet but I'll fit and mount my harnesses to it just to get it MOT'd.

ill be taking the Nova to work in the morning so I can put it on the ramp to sort my exhaust leak and make sure everything is tight and nothing is leaking.

I wouldnt want to mount harnesses to the rear brace, it is not secure enough IMO. If you do and bolt the brace on I would plate the arch tubs behind where it bolts.

I understand where you are coming from but I shall be using harness spreader plates on the inside of the arch which should be good enough i'd of thought, especially as the top of the arches are slightly reinforced anyway.

Why not go straight to the seat belt bolt points in the floor (rear seat pan) as they are right in the right place....

Liam
22-05-14, 09:46 PM
I've seen them mounted this way lots of times in rally cars and they pass scrutineering so can't be all that bad. The bloke who done my cage made me the brace and said it should be perfectly fine to mount the belts there, and he's been building rally and rallycross cars for over 20+ years.

Anyway, managed to fit the bumpers, grill, rear brace and harnesses. It's now nearly ready for it's MOT tomorrow!!

Mounting the belts on that brace with no spreaders will be fine, there's a few layers of steel there.

Fitting fiberglass doors isn't a 5 Minute job, just make sure you properly mock fit them before paint as they will 100% need altering.
