Hey all I hope you can help. At the weekend I fitted a 1.4 8v engine to my nova shell I have all the loom and everything. the battery light is always on even when the key is out, and when I turn the key to ignition on I get the oil warning light on, then when I finally go to start the engine theres nothing no starter click or anything.
I have checked the ground wires I have one to the battery and one from gearbox and also one on the passanger side inner chassis leg is this correct ?
I also had afew problems remembering where some wires went lol It was a long weekend working on car.
Does the red wire from the starter attatch to the alternator ?
I have a blue and white thin wire does this connect to alternator ?
I have a red & black wire does this connect to the starter solonoide ?
I also have what looks like an earth to the oil pressure switch but cant work out where it goes ?
sorry for all the questions but I just really want to get this engine running If anyone can help appreciate it.

Thick red wire goes to alternator, as does the thin blue, and the red and black one is the wire from your ignition switch to trigger the starter.
as far as earths go, you should have one from the battery to the body, and one then from the passenger chassis leg to the gearbox

yes mate, red and black goes to your starter. it should have a permanant live from the battery, and the red and black is your switched live to trigger it

Well tonight I had another go at getting the engine going. I checked to make sure that I had power from the ignition live and switch and I had nothing from the black & red wire. so I connected up a wire from the solonoide straight to the battery and the starter clicked so I am getting somewhere now just. Also I think the battery has had it as its been off car for ages. I will try a new one tomorrow.

New battery or charge that one. A tip when trying to start an engine thats been sat for a while...remove the air filter and pour a little bit of petrol directly into the carb. Then hold a rag over the top of the carb and get someone else to turn the key.
Also make sure your spark plugs are nice and dry... :thumb:

Thanks for the info the battery has been charged it was charging at about 15v and it was on all day so think I will try battery off my car just to rule out battery issue. I need to get new earth leads and then try again. I think the earth points need cleaning as the engine bay has been painted so will give them a rub down.
I will let you know how I get on.

Bit of an update on getting engine going. I did a test on the starter andI was getting a switched 12v when ignition was on but it wasnt cranking starter so I took it off and cleaned the terminals now its turning engine but only slow. I have fitted the battery off my corsa which I use daily so I know its in good condition. Also I am not getting a spark from any plug. Any ideas ?

Here are the pics of engine loom I am unsure about. I Know some of them are for the lights but any help on the others would be great.
I have this bundle of wire which has a fuse and is located near the battery not sure if its standard or not.
