View Full Version : Project Nova

Many of you may remember me from my Estoril Blue SR build a few years ago.

I've been given a 1.2i non runner in a lovely shade of flame pink. Had a look over it and it seems solid in all the usual area's nova's suffer from.

I've tried getting it running - tried plugs, leads, coil and cleaning all earth's up but nothing so given up (read i want to change the engine :d ).

Has anyone got or know of anyone in the South London/Croydon area breaking a sri, gte or gsi i can buy the engine, box and loom from?

This will be a slow project as i have little spare time with my two little terror's keeping me busy.

I'll get some pics up asap.

i'm from croydon aswell mate :( bad times, put a new cam belt on it and do the timing they don't bend valves so your be ok :)

if not i'm picking up another nova "see other project thread" and i belive it's got a 1.6 8v lump in it, so goes straight on gearbox just have to modify the engine mount, I'll know more tomorrow night and hopefully pick it up monday if your intrested in any bits of it. I can't tell you much as I really don't know much about it till i've seen it.

Give me a shout on here or drop me a pm mate :)

no you dont at all, they are non interference engines, lob a new belt on and it will fire straight up

another one for sticking a new belt on, be very unlucky to have done any damage

TonySR
21-01-11, 09:47 AM
It was going along the motorway when it snapped so i'll be surprised if it hasn't got any damage, still i'll try a belt first.

Took a few pic's of it, not the best as space is a problem in my garage at the mo...

looks like itll be a good project and yeah it defo wont have done any damage even on the motor way the only way it would damage the valves would be if the valve has come out of its seat take the cam cover off and just make sure all the valves and springs are still there if thay are then itll be right.

Worryingly enough, that cambelt looks quite new. It's normally dead old belts that break, so if I was you I'd have a quick check to see if anything else is wrong (completely knackered water pump??).

Of course it might have been way over-tensioned if it was fitted without moving the water pump in the block.

Shell looks very good though. Sort the bits at the bottom of the sills infront of the rear wheels and you'll have a good 'un there.

Definitely time to get the Waxoyl out...

TonySR
17-03-11, 11:23 AM
Yeap the waxoyl will be coming out soon enough.

Right, the replacement engine is in. Just waiting on a complete wiring loom from moffat before I can crack on with wiring it up and finish fitting parts.

Also got a set of 40mm springs and dampers to go on and I won a set of 14" steels from a Corsa D with good tyres for £20, which I collected from Kent on sunday just gone.

Update time. (Can a Mod change the title to 'Nova SRi Replica Project' please?)

Had an hour on it today so refitted the engine loom, radiator, all hoses except one (matrix hose) as needs lengthening, connected downpipe to manifold, fitted clutch and accelerator cables, cleaned the coolant and washer tanks and refitted those, need to remove and refit the HT leads as I got them the wrong way round lol.

I've decided not to change the car loom and just remove what is not used(1.2spi stuff).

Left to do is:
* Fit fuel hoses.
* Starter & alternator wiring to connect (need to change a ring connector on the alternator wiring).
* Lengthen matrix hose.
* Connect engine loom to car loom (black and green wires to coil plug, red/blue to fuel pump, blue to coolant temp sensor and red to battery, any others I need to connect?).
* Drill hole in bulk head for ECU wiring into car.
* Fit air filter when it turns up.
* Charge and fit battery.
* Change one outer CV Boot.
* Fit 60mm suspension kit.
* Paint & fit 14" steels SRi style.
* Clean & Fit SRi interior.
* Wash, cut & polish the whole car.
* Check over for MOT and book MOT.

Once Mot'd, I'll be on the look out for Mk2 rub strips, SR window surrounds and paint the lower half of the car grey as per SRi's...

Had a few hours on it today and did quite a few jobs, still need to fit the rear SRi seats once I get a set of brackets.

Won a set of SRi dials on ebay for £10.49, to replace the 1.2i dials.

Half hour of taking them apart, messing around with cogs and putting back together, the mileage matches the original (shown in link below) dials.

Not updated this for months due a family member passing away in August aged 23.

I've been collecting parts for it, set of hub caps from a Astra van which will need painting to match the wheels, window surrounds (still to collect the drivers door surrounds from PaulWar), sr rub strips, new genuine drivers headlight, electric windows and a alarm. Also I have ordered a passenger arch repair panel from Hadrian.

I've gone halves on a mig welder with my brother in law to do the few bits of welding and he wants to build a bike engine'd go kart.

Yesterday I removed both wings as the passenger inner arch still needs painting and the drivers side didn't line up properly which now sits perfect. I was surprised to find no rot on the passenger inner arch/splash panel so that's good. Only bits that need welding are the passenger rear arch and inner arch has a small hole and the front panel needs a few plates.

I'm hoping to get a few hours on it each night over the next few days so should be a few updates coming...

Mrsmith - I have a mate coming round once its finished to polish and wax the whole car. We did the bonnet at the end of July with his Megs buffer and the result was amazing but he thinks he can get it looking better...

Just Hammerite. I've yet to go round the whole car with waxoyl once its all welded and painted.

The rear arch turned up today, need to cut it down and get that welded on soon.

Had a good sort out of my garage and cleared a load of rubbish/junk. It's surprising how much you store/chuck in the garage over a year! Enough to fill four black bags and approx 50kg of scrap metal/alloy.

Anyway whilst the wing was off from painting the inner wing, I thought I'd polish it seeing as I still have my mates G220 buffer.

I've been buying bits and pieces for the nova the last few weeks so during my 3 weeks off next month, I will be cracking on and hopefully getting the nova finished.

But at the moment I have been sidetracked by my new toy. Bought as a non runner, with 28,000 miles. Garaged for the last 5 years and only did 320 miles in that time as the previous owner's other half didn't want him to have it...

Went and viewed it and the old MOT's backed up the mileage so left a deposit and picked her up the following weekend.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/8ee1c54e.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/e830e415.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/67381497.jpg

Once home I fitted the new battery the previous owner bought, stripped and cleaned the carbs and got it running but, on 3 cylinders.
Removed plugs and no.4 was dry so set about getting a replacement set of carbs.

Searching ebay I came across a set from a 2004 bandit that had done 8000miles. Fired off a message asking if they would fit a 1997 Bandit and the seller wasn't sure so I took a gamble and got them for £40+postage.

They turned up yesterday morning, I removed the originals and took these pics to compare the two.

Then fitted them leaving the TPS unplugged and it starts and runs as it should. Just need to get them balanced now.
Clean carbs are Mk2, others are Mk1 (originals).

Then phoned up my local MOT centre and booked it in for today at 1pm. Will post back results once home...

Just a quick reply to say I haven't touched the nova since I got the bike, but I have just had three cans of AutoTek Grey paint delivered with the view of getting the following done:
Finish n/s window surrounds
Doors off & repaired
Welding to the n/s rear arch
Paint the bottom of the car Grey
Fit the rubs strips
Paint rub strips red (blue atm)
Refit all panels/interior
Nut/Bolt check all over

Then it will either be insured, MOT'd & Tax'd or remain in the garage & pull the engine out to respray the bay. Guess I will see when I have completed the above list first...

So the nova has sat untouched since the last update... On Wednesday 7th I called up an old friend of my Dads and booked it in for the welding to be done on Saturday 10th August. Panic! The nova has no glass fitted on n/s, flat battery, wheels off on axle stands, the brakes need bleeding and it's full of parts and camping gear inside and on the roof. Window surrounds for n/s still need painting too! Cracked on anyhow and this is where I left it yesterday before work...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/3F095851-27A0-435D-AF78-1A3C90466946-9758-000006D7DE986C37_zps321037ee.jpg

Just painting of the window surrounds and fit glass before I goto work today and then it's been collected at 9am tomorrow for welding (still on 1.2 brakes that have sat for 3 years, they don't brake well when they work efficiently, I'm not risking being towed with them).

What needs welding...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/dc2c43ec.jpg

Plus a bit of work on the corner of the n/s door, but I haven't got a pic of that.

TonySR
12-08-13, 10:07 PM
Collected the nova today, but had to rush off out after putting it back in my garage.

All welded, it's not the best, but nothing a skim of filler and a few minutes with a grinder won't sort. It's never going to be mint, just a tidy old nova.

Inside of the n/s rear arch welded and under sealed... Will paint over it with some red once I've filled and painted the arch.

& front valance. This will be treated with zinc primer and painted outside and waxoyl'd on the inside to stop the welds rusting. Not great, but its all hidden behind the bumper.

Small update. Won a set of wheels that need a refurb on eBay for £43. Not sure if I will do them silver or anthracite yet and also unsure on fitting 165 50 tyres or 195 45?

Picked them up from Dorking and on way back stopped off for some filler, wet & dry and primer to sort the welded bits and few smells dents as I've now decide it will be painted after I've done all the prep work.

& yesterday I collected an engine which I'll be doing a gasket rebuild on for peace of mind and to check it is what the seller said... Rebuilt 1500 miles ago and fitted with a piper cam and vernier pulley. Need a diesel 1.7 flywheel if anyone has one?

Been sanding and filling the n/s door corner and rear quarter where it has been welded as it had a large dent in the quarter. It didn't look bad looking at it head on.

Anyway, here's where I'm at now...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/1667E440-B579-4FC3-935F-C9E4180E47A5-4733-00000330345A3BD2_zps2ab80610.jpg

I've just given it a skim of filler to fill in all the tiny holes and hoping it doesn't need anymore. Trying to get the swage line back was the hardest part.

Need some red primer so it's not so much of an eye sore and then take it for mot after putting the door cards back on which I left off for the alarm and central locking to be fitted.

Next up I bought a pair of calipers/sliders and discs from Turbo Chris for £30 delivered only to find the O/S one seized and bleed screw snapped clean off, so ordered a new caliper from Autoparts for £33.95. Need to touch up the inner arches with hammerite where a bit of overspray got in and paint the rear quarter red, then I can turn the car round and do the other side.

The mirror covers I painted last week.

So the nova has been on the road for a few months having passed it's MOT back in May. Few teething problems which I've now sorted mainly being it kept stalling whenever coming to a stop which was because it didn't have a VSS fitted.

Today I gave it a quick wash and fitted the new wheels.

Unsure if I should leave the centre caps as they are, paint them silver or painted the middle of the wheel anthracite?

Today in between the showers we've had I managed to clean, hoover, polish and wax the nova...

I used a meguiars g220v2 da, ultimate compound polish and gold class liquid wax.

Fitted 2nd new starter motor after being sent wrong one first time, now selects first and reverse without having to hold it in gear and sorted the misfire under load by fitting the coil pack from the x16xe in my garage.

Will be pulling the engine out the tigra over winter and giving that a freshen up before fitting it in the nova.

Looks good, I reckon those silver Tigra 5 spokes would look great on it.

TonySR

Cheers Craig. I'm not too keen on the 5 spokes, I have a set of astra sport 7 spokes which I'm going to refurb and fit over winter.

Does anyone know what model steering rack from a corsa fits the nova?

Coming along nicely. I@d say take the window and surround out when you paint the quarter tho... Has it been lowered?

TonySR
28-09-14, 03:33 PM
Yes Benn, it's lowered 60mm. Paint will be done over winter too.

Picked my weights, bars and bench up from a mates earlier today...

Hey Tony; where did you order your Valeo headlights from?

TonySR
28-09-14, 07:15 PM
I bought them from eBay when they came up. The two came up about 18 months apart, one was £6.50 and the other £15.

I'll find out if I can get them through the mrs work if you want?

Cheers Millworm.

The Tigra is off to the scrapyard tomorrow. The engine is out ready to be rebuilt and a few days ago I put a deposit down on this:

A 1967 Ford Anglia 105E Super.

It's got all the panels and running gear aside from the exhaust. Started as a restoration project and gave up with only a few bits left to do (rear valence, spring hanger x1 and n/s headlight surround). I will be finishing off the welding and getting it painted Lagoon blue and/or Ermine white then decide what engine/suspension to fit... Few pics of it before it was stripped:

Not updated this for what seems like ages...

Stripped the x16xe engine down and replaced the valve oil seals and lapped the valves in, then took it to Bensham engineering for it to be skimmed only to be told it had recently been skimmed after checking it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/DSC_0257_zpsbkj62nga.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/TonySR/media/Nova%20K41/DSC_0257_zpsbkj62nga.jpg.html)

Replaced the cams with new seals and gave the whole engine a few coats of silver paint.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/DSC_0258_zpsoe8nfubu.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/TonySR/media/Nova%20K41/DSC_0258_zpsoe8nfubu.jpg.html)

Followed by a new timing belt kit.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/DSC_0259_zps9h3zhc2i.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/TonySR/media/Nova%20K41/DSC_0259_zps9h3zhc2i.jpg.html)

Finished putting it all back together and had the exhaust manifold welded where the SAI valve once lived.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/IMG_20150415_165018_zpsmrkctvjz.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/TonySR/media/Nova%20K41/IMG_20150415_165018_zpsmrkctvjz.jpg.html)

Then removed the 8v engine, swapped the flywheel over onto the XE and spent about an hour trying to get the engine in, gave up and decided to remove the gearbox from the car and put them in together. 20 minutes later with the help of a mate it was in.

I booked it in to have a custom exhaust system made, only for it to start playing up the next day, Cue loads of fault codes...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/Screenshot_2015-04-25-17-43-15_zps20jkpztf.png (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/TonySR/media/Nova%20K41/Screenshot_2015-04-25-17-43-15_zps20jkpztf.png.html)

I replaced the ECU Permanent live as that had a break in it and it fired up, but still had the same faults. So ordered a OPD Inlet after noticing the inlet was leaking even though I torqued the inlet as per Haynes manual and swapped the TPS from the 8v engine whilst fitting it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v493/TonySR/Nova%20K41/DSC_0289_zpsfgqjlwk7.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/TonySR/media/Nova%20K41/DSC_0289_zpsfgqjlwk7.jpg.html)

Started and was misfiring straight away so removed plugs and no.3 was dead, so popped to my local Autoparts store and got him to check they were the right plugs I received from Eurocarparts which they weren't. x16xe's use a twin tipped plug so bought a set and fitted them and it now runs perfectly with the only fault being the EGR position which I've blanked and left plugged in.

Will have some more updates shortly when I re-book it in for the exhaust system to be made and MOT booked in.

Took it for an MOT which it failed on N/S caliper sticking, track rod end worn, both top mounts and catalytic convertor missing so had those parts replaced and a full stainless system made with a 2.5" outwardly rolled pipe.

Tomorrow's job is to wire up and fit a boot popper to the alarm.

Now I'm torn on what to next... Do I finish it by fitting the astra sport wheels and prep it for an exterior respray? Or do I fit the wheels, paint the spoiler and quarter and sell it on as I really want an E30/36?!
