standard suspension works in two parts

springs and skock absorbers

coilovers still have these parts but they are housed in one unit for each corner.

i'm sure some of the other novaheads can explain better than i

just search for hot tuning nova coilovers

Spring/damper setup, fixed height:

Coilover, height adjustable:

As stated, Coilovers house the whole suspension unit in one. As well as being able to adjust the height, damping, changing springs for ones to take heavier loads etc (dependant on the quality of the coilover of course).

Generally, a good set of coilovers that have been set up right will out-perform uprated shocks and springs, however cheapy coilovers are not so good.

for racing, no

for all time great lows, yes

quite a few people on rat-look even cut out the helper springs on those cheap coilies for drops 140mm +

heard of no probs yet, but they arent racing them or dropping in xe lumps

I would prefer a good set of dampers/springs to a set of crap/cheap coilovers.

I'd be very wary of cutting springs, even on coilovers. The damper unit could handle it (i.e. shorter spring) I suppose, but you're weakening the spring structure - considering you can get coilsprings made up to pretty much any spec, I'd rather spend the $$$ and have some made rather than get all Baxter on the spring.

the problem with standard lenght shocks is when you put a shorter spring on them the piston can bottom out as its too long so you really should use a proper kit

its at the maximum for road driving.... you must cut the bump stop down as well..

you can get shorter stock dampers for a gte, but they cost big money

some rear coilovers fit in where your shock is but some dont, many members on here use gaz ones and if your a paid member you get a dicount when buying. my billstein rear coilovers do not fit so i have to get my rear suspesion turretted which involves cutting out the inner arch and welkding in a box to house the coilover.

many other users use the standard nova setup but with koni or spax or bilstien shocks and springs to replace the standard items.

my coilovers

they cost £165, fine if all you want is to lower you car and cruise about, mine cost £850 and are recomended for tarmac rallying, you get what you pay for mate,

haere is a example of a good quality standard direct replacement for the standard nova stuff http://froogle.motorsportworld.co.uk/framefix.asp?PID=776542&ProductCode=TAP114

those ebay ones are not the coilover rear type like mine, the springs and shocks in that kit go in the same place as the ones on your car now
