View Full Version : Project FRST
After a few years of being a regular user on here, and building several rather poor cars, ive yet to have a project thread. Mainly because i never had the money to make a good go at a project. And the only car worthy of a project thread (a 90 spec XR3i i restored) i never bothered taking progress pictures of.
So here it is. Officially my first Novaload/PNG project thread.
The car: J reg Ford Fiesta RS Turbo.
The story: A friend of mine bought the car as a shell about 6 years ago. He worked at a bodyshop at the time. The car was there for years as i recall untouched. Then over another year, the shell was restored to immaculate condition. Replacement sills, rear quarters, doors and wings were sourced, and fitted. The car was then completely painted in the original colour.
Spec: Although being original as possible on the outside. It has many modifications. Such as, 1800cc ZVH bottom end, T3 Turbo (TT), Roose Motorsport hoses, double capacity Pace intercooler, full SS turbo back with outward rolled backbox, AVO coilovers and GreenStuff pads.
I bet your bored now and waiting for some pictures, most of you, if like me, have probably looked at the pictures first, and read all the information after :d
When i first bought the car and stored at a friends barn, now knocked down :(

Then i got a well needed, new camera for Christmas

Then, there was a problem!
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0825.jpg
But then, there was spares/freebees
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0844.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0845.jpg
And a few bits ive obtained over time.
Vernier, new cambelt, brand new strut top bearing (dont know why i have this, was free, not needed) new tophat type valve stem seals and various gaskets:

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0848.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0850.jpg
Jobs to do:
-Solve oil leak from turbo return pipe. Parts sourced
-Fit new tensioner
-Fit new cambelt
-Possibly fit new cam
-Fit new vernier pulley
-Fit -31 actuator
-Fit new valve stem seals
-A good few days detailing
-Remove bonnet raisers
Parts to get:
-31 actuator
-Cam cover gasket
I do have some graphs/printouts i might put up tomorrow, but for those of you wondering what power it is, its 165BHP. Hopefully soon to be 200BHP, with the help of a new actuator. Everything else is ready to go.
Nice car mate would personally go for the escort cossy rims but thats just me

Love little rs turbos!
Looks brill!
That was my original idea. But im going to keep it original as possible. Id like to see if i could win some kind of award for it at Ford shows this year. But having been to quite a few Ford events, i dont think i'd stand a chance with the competition out there.
Love little rs turbos!

Cheers pal.
I can only take little credit, as i did help re-assemble after the shell had been painted.
Nice !!
I like the 3 spokes
Nice !!
I like the 3 spokes
Me too, just not wide enough. Ive been looking for some road legal slicks to fit the wheels, just for fun.
Again, im keeping it as original as i can with the outside, and interior. There should be no reason why it wouldnt get decent attention. Its not your average, patched up, ragged to death rotten old Ford. A lot of time and money has been spent. I have folders of reciepts tottaling £2000 in parts, let alone what it would of cost for the time and materials of a bodyshop.

Lol if only, she was a bloody fortune!
Are you attending any Ford events this year David? If so youll have to let me know.
Get in! This one looks great. I love it when I see these things on the road now.
3 spokes all the way!

fordfair for sure just to drool at some mk2 scorts and some 3 door sierras
that spare fanlooks prime for a xe front mount, surprisingly enough i have a escort rs front fan on my xe just seems ok and gives me loads more room,
does the fez need much doing:)
Nice Scooby plate too lol.
Do the wheels have black circular covers behind them like fake discs? I can't remember. Fizzy T FTW though! Even the engine bay looks retro now if you get me. That cross over hard pipe always has though, yet Vaux still use it. lol
I think it's the lettering what looks so cool on the RST's.

Nice wee project.
Awesome cars these and very underated. I had two in the past and still hanker after another. Always fancied a white one too.
Always an oportunity to be a pic whore ;)

You not taking your S1 on stand?
Yeh its not bad little fan. But it wont be going on no car. It'll be going on my Sprinter love wagon! I was going to do a project thread for it, as i was working down a bodyshop on it painting the whole thing. So got all the pictures, just didnt know if it was worth me making a project thread for my work van!
As for the work that needs doing on the little Fez. No there isnt a lot, only what i wrote in the first thread. Its only done 2000 miles since its complete rebuild, that includes the engine
I thought about spending my deposit money on a Focus RS at one stage. But then thought not Lol.
Sweet Fiestas. Blacks an awefull colour to keep in A1. My XR3i was black, spent more time treating it than driving it.
What intercooler is that on the J reg?
Wooo that fiesta looks awesome, there used to be a tickled up white one round here years ago that was standard on the outside except it was sat on its ringpiece, was properly fast though:d
Also makes me miss my old 2i

My cousin offered me £200 plus a new plate and transfers for the WRX plate for one of his scoobies. But i said NO! Only for the whole original theme.
No, they are part of the alloys if you get me. All one piece.
Ford bays are always a bit messy. But i know what you mean. I love the oldschool messyness of an MFI turbo bay.

Like mine. I/we had a quick ''race'' as it were. Only i had a 300zx TT manual, 326BHP. Couldnt get past the little Fiesta.
My aunty had a 2i from brand spankers when i was younger. Loved it even when i was at primary school. And always loved red 2i's since.
Properly good handling cars, on par i'd say with Nova's from my experience. Just can be a little light on the back end.

Was a Pace twin core, remember it was nearly 10 years ago and the tuning has moved on massively interms of intercooling etc.
Car had a T2 hybrid built from a band new Garrett core, mongoose zorst, samcos, ultrasonically clean and flow checked injectors, mild porting of the head by me at home ;) , piper cross element in the box and Ahmed Bajyoo chip.
It ran 175Bhp at the wheels at 18psi peak. It subsequent destroyed the g/box and I stripped 3rd gear smoking a then new EP3 Type R...

my s2 used to destroy ctr's very funny especially as the one near me says bye bye gti on the bumper i did lol when i went past
Thats good power on a T2 and standard internals.
This one smokes crappy EP3's all day long. Mind you, i know of diesel Golfs that do. K20 FTL
Mines only running 10PSI at the moment, and peaking at 11. But hopefully with a new actuator i should be around 220BHP (EDIT - I MEAN 200BHP NOT 220!). I did see a similar spec with 220BHP, but personally, i think that will be a bit optimistic on my standard head.
Also, i have Bayjoo chip (i think!) have to look through the reciepts, i know it does have a reciept for a chip and fitting.
The only Honda worth considering is a DC2 IMO.

Standard bottoms ends will run 16psi all day if looked after. Was quite a special T2 built by Vince Bunn at Universall Turbos back in the day.
I was shocked more than anyone when it put it out. I spose you could allow + or - 10% for the rolling road lottery. It was properly quick and with a s2 Lsd box in it properly set up suspension with revised geometry it did put some other bigger 'RS's' to shame also;) Same the next owner wrote it off:cry:
The grey car is still going strong and the onwer is also a member of the local RS group I run...

Thats one thing i forgot to mention. Mine also uses LSD box. Needs the coilovers setting for best handling though.
I built a XE Nova years ago, spent weeks of my time on it, not to mention the money. Sold it to some bloke who smashed it up within days. If they had to put the money and effort in, perhaps they would consider treating it with some respect. Let alone respect for other road users
Forgot to put pics up of the vernier. Shame its not got phat blingage :(
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0843.jpg
Lovely car mate, looks well.I also like the fords, had an Xr3i and an Xr2.Always yearned for a turbo though.
Cheers :)
Gotta love old Fords, when i was younger i always loved Fords. Then i moved to Vauxhall and sworn id never move away from th griffin. Now i wouldnt dream about buying one. Strange as i have no particular reason.
I might have the centre of the vernier colour coded with the rest of the bay. Opinions?

I had a look through the receipts, just to see if i did have a Bayjoo chip. Ive got a ''Ford OFAB EEC Evolution Chip to suit 1.8ZVH, standard 1.6 head, T3 Turbo, FM Intercooler and Bosche 701's''
So the chip is specially developed for the engine, which is ideal. Ill be looking forward to seeing what power it makes with a -31.
Also got some pictures of the printouts.

Two classics rotting in the snow, tut tut, all that damp and salt :(
Removed a few boost pipes today, just to make it easier when i replace the turbo oil return hopefully sometime this weekend if weather permits.
Also checked the turbo, slight side to side movement, but most if not all should be illiminated by the build up of oil pressure. But no back and forth play which is great.
I like Mk3 Fiestas too. Heres mine not a turbo but it does what it was built for well.

Thats bloody lovely Dayle.
I was considering tracking mine at one stage.
I dont suppose you got any more pics of the car have you? And a spec, i'd love to see it, looks really interesting!
Oh yeh, just a quick update, replaced turbo return oil feed today, so no more phat oil leaks. Started up with a flick of the key after being stood for well over a month, if not 2. Had a hell of a lot of smoke, valve stem seals need replacing, as the smoke cleared once warm, and was fine. Roll on show season!
A small rather boring update.
Started dismantling for cambelt replacement, and a good clean this weekend hopefully. Should make it a lot easier to clean with belts and pulleys out the way.
Imaged of just how dirty it is
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0854.jpg
Bits removed. Also id appreciate opinions on what colour i should have the alternator pulley painted :)
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0856.jpg
Vernier VS Standard camshaft pulley. Also gonna have a good clean before fitting.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0857.jpg
And a PHAT airfilter i had in the shed that i forgot about. Brand new! Green Cotton too. Looks a lot better than that cheap Ripspeed one.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0855.jpg
Hopefully to come this weekend: An update of a good clean of the engine bay, if weather permits.
Polished my vernier and fitted it, along with new cam belt and tensioner. Started up no problem. But is taping quite badly, as it was before I took it all apart. Having not driving it ever, I assumed it was being left over a long period of time. I'll be removing the rocker cover over the next week or so, to make sure there's plety of oil at the top end.
On the brighter side. The polished vernier and new bits belt side of the engine uplift the bay a bit. Pics to follow tomorrow.
Heres the pics as promised.
My vernier went from
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0843.jpg
And now:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0859.jpg
Along with nice clean cambelt and tensioner
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0860.jpg
And a bit boring but an update anyway. The last bonnet stay holder clip got overspray all over it. And i found a brand new one on ebay, so i had to have it!
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0862.jpg
Now all i need to do is solve the mega tapping. Doesnt seem to be a great lot of oil at the top end. And the dipstick reads on the half mark. Im going to do an oil and filter change along with the valve stem seals. And see how it goes, hopefully solve the problem.
To update the thead, after changing the valve stem seals, the oil and filter was changed, and was running perfect for a short while. Then the car stood for 2 weeks. One day i cleaned the engine bay, and developed a misfire on idle. Turns out to be a spark plug not wanting to play, so they will all be replaced. Other than that it runs perfect once again.
I also removed the bonnet lifters, as they looked aweful IMO.
Now for a more interesting update, although not that exciting.
I spent all day giving the car a quick detail. Which included:
Wash - Clay - Wash - Polish - Wax. Unfortunatly i was unable to machine polish, but isnt really needed anyway. Also the tailpipe and intercooler was given some metal polish.
Anyway the results:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0883.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0882.jpg

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0871.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0874.jpg
Then the posty turnt up while i was cleaning!
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0870.jpg
So i looked up where it was supposed to go and on it went, along with a battered battery cover i manged to straighten out a considerable amount.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e168/db89/SAM_0879.jpg
That looks the fukkin sex mate nice one.
Id love one of these!! Always wanted one!

Awww, cheers Andy, you made my day :)
It does look better in person, I couldn't take a good picture to save my life! I'm really really pleased with the overall condition of the paint. My friend obviously spent a lot of time making sure the finish was perfect.
Next to be addressed is the underside. I removed a wheel a few weeks ago and seen it had braided brake hoses, which I was very pleased with, go very nice with the AVO 3 ways.
If i manage to clean the underside well, I'd like to get some mirrors made up, but we will see in time.
Very nice, love the original chunky 3 spokers :)

They could do with a refurb if I'm honest. It's the only thing that let's the car down now.
No update. But the car is now for sale, I will put a for sale thread up asap. I need the car gone, as I will be buying a house in the next few weeks. It will have 12 months MOT, but no tax, unless I am paid for it. £2300, an absolute bargain. All receipts and service history. PM me.
