View Full Version : Fuel prices.
Well as it will go up again tomorrow do you think its the beginning of an end to modified cars and the way we travel?
Now my legs pretty much healed and watching the price of the fuel go from £1.10 - £1.21 per litre and with the VAT increase tomorrow alongside the raised insurance prices and road tax is it actually worth having a car these days?
I can afford It but I just feel Its a massive piss take now and totally beyond a joke. Its got to the point where many of the cars I wanted are now just a dream due to the running costs It has sucked any enjoyment out of owning a performance car. I was all set for buying another evo once I sold the clio.
Thoughts?

I'm still going to attempt to keep the fun cars as its my hobby and there isn't much else that I am interested in wasting the money on.
However I am going to get a diesel car for daily use if anyone ever buys the Corsa in order to save some money to then spend on the fun cars.
The UK does blow the big donder somewhat really.

For the 1st time ever, i'm gonna choose which shows i visit. I usually do one show or another every couple of weeks.
Just cant afford to do it as much now.
Andy, Duty went up on the 1st, so that explains some of the rises.
I can still afford to run both my cars comfortably at the moment, but it is getting silly. If I lived somewhere that had decent, regular, affordable public transport then yeah, I'd either lose the car or (more likely) keep it as a weekend thing for 3k a year. Unfortunately, the public transport network in this country is a complete farce unless you live and work in London city.
I'm earning almost £27k a year at the mo, when [big US defence/aviaton company] come in and tell me I have to commute to Bristol, it would be more financially viable for me to force them to make me redundant, then drop down to an E1 grade and take a £10k a year pay cut lol
I can see the prices of Diesel cars going through the roof now...

yea its a sh*t hole allright!! but yea i kind off agree with rexy the cost will ruin owning a performance car for some people!! but then you will get allot off people taking the law into thier own hands and not declaring conversions simply because they cant afford it!!
this country is w*nk!!
Agreed 100% Rexton! I actually quite like having a shonky ****ter for a daily drive. I'm losing the interest for owning any sort of "modified" car quickly.
The thing is,if you notice,ALMOST EVERYTHING that is enjoyable is taxable.Driving, beering, smoking even pissing ffs!
How long will it be before your at it hammer and tongs with ya mrs and the chancellor of the exchequer knocks on your door and asks..."you just chuck ya muck then did ya lad???? That'll be £1 for you,and £3 for your lass" lol
ive seen petrol down ere at 132.9, managed to ling in 40 quid at 123.9

^Australia FTW!
Only downside is piss water beer & spiders the size of smal children that can eat you. Other then that Im all for it!!
Average price is $1.25AUD over there - about 82ppl...
Mind you, their cars are all thirsty V8s that do 10 to the gallon lol
[edit] Canada is what you want. Nothing that dangerous, nice skiing, 72ppl :d

true, but what would you rather pull up to a load of aussie beachball babes in?? A big manly v8 making loads of noise and creating loads dust behind you,or a shonky 80's sh1tbox nova popping and fartyfarty bang bang??? lol
ah but aus you insure the car not the driver (i think) so you can save a shed load on insurance allowing you to do 3mpg

Insurance is very cheap there. Like America. Although life insurance is mandatory & thus costly.

and id love to go to watch the bathurst 500 lol so would be great in the aus take my nova over and get a holden comadore to match lol
Running a 2.2 astra and v6 meg plus building the nova is starting to hurt my wallet. Thats why were moving to Bristol with the aim of getting more local jobs and trying and ditch one of the dailys.
Ive looked at moving to Bristol lately Matt, the house prices there dont seem to be as stupid as where I am now & the "average" sizes are much bigger then here to!

Let's be honest when fuel goes up another £1 per ltr we will still use as much and the goverment no this!

bullsh!t, blame the bankers and the country - i.e. us, the taxpayer - having to bail them out to the tune of a few £billion, of which I highly doubt we'll ever see again.

True true.
Its nice to know whilst the UK is broke our goverments deems it fine to give £100m to India aid outfits though isnt it.

Doesnt really bother me tbh. I hardly drive anywhere because a journey will cost me a fair bit but that still wont stop me doing what i enjoy. Il always plan to buy 'modified' or sports cars and would have no problem at all with buying something that does 15mpg or whatever. Aslong as you stick to the older cars tax isnt too expensive and insurance is and has always been decent for me.
You can still enjoy motoring without driving miles and miles. Buy a nice car and just enjoy it on those days that you want to spend the money on petrol rather than have it out everyday.

house share with Jack? lol or shall we all buy pikey vans and move in with Lee lol
Hotbit, Mike and Me all in one house. This spells disaster lol

The house would probably be run better than this stupid country... Why raise the VAT to 20%? Cut the bankers bonuses, or make them donate all un essential spending to the rest of us tax playing people...
I thought a lot of the bank money was repaid.... granted there is still a lot outstanding in 'shares' but they cant really be sold in one hit as it will cause the same to happen again.
BUT you kinda do have to blamed the Govt for the problem as most companies can be left to goto the wall.... so why should he Govt have bailed just another business hmmm.
Anyway, aslong as we still pay for fuel, they will charge us what they want :( plus assuming there is truth in the limit of remaining fossil fuels, you cant supply a declining product for less cash :(
I noticed the fuel prices went up round here on xmas eve, and then obv had the extra increases added on the 1st and tomorrow.... lovely.
Hotbit, Mike and Me all in one house. This spells disaster lol
Spells awesomeness IMO lol
Its funny, the prices went up just before xmas due to "logistical costs", i.e. the cost of getting the fuel through the snow (:tard:), but as soon as the roads were clear I didn't see the price dip down again lol
In the same way, when the price of oil peaked up by about $15 in 09, the pump prices went up too due to the "rise in oil price". Yet when the oil price then fell a month later by $20, did the pump price fall? No lol
apparently it takes 3 months for the barrel price to hit the pumps.... but that dosent explain the instant rise lol

if more people drove 5L v8, they would need more fuel, so they could reduce the price, and still get the same amount of income lol
now is the time to be buying big v8s....in the vain hope that prices might crash lol
I think im going to buy a horse.
I can ride it to work and just park it up on the field behind my office. job done. :)

This.
im actually buying a bike lmao pedal power
And this.
I figure I can do trips to uni/work on the bike and get a double benefit of cost and no longer having the heart and lungs of a 35 year old smoker instead of 22 year old non lol
The diesel nova can do 50-55MPG on a long trip (when the alt/bearings/CV/turbo/exhaust isn't still fcuked it might do more! lol) I've actually considered turning into a little comfort machine, although it seems to go against everything that makes sense to me, I have the yellow machine for the ligher seats/scrape the sound deadening out/remove interior etc lol Other option is a nice TD saloon of some sort but I'm guessing they are now going to be a) held on to, b) fcuking expensive. Tbh though, a good petrol should do 40-45 and the fuel is 5-10% cheaper so you can call that 44-50... there's not that much in it.
However it still goes back to insurance being ridiculous in the end, I'm hoping it's less to insure the 2 cars than insure and fuel/tax the yellow machine, otherwise I'll just drive that all year until it is tbh.
I looked at the eco box and fun car options and franky taxing and insuring two cars (one being modded to fook) makes for an epicly expensive option compared to running one slightly fun car that is still sensible enough when you want it to be

But this option is far too grown up, either "erm, can I just tell you whats still standard, it's a shorter list?" all year round or part time, one lightly modded doesn't cut it lol
edit: And I will even ride a bike in the rain if that's what it takes.
wuss :p
I'm sorry what, I'm the wuss because I'd prefer to drive a proper all out track car on the roads, than a soft car full of comforts? lol
you lot should try being in the haulage business... our fuel useage is a tad more than with cars.....

yeah but you lot should be able to claim the vat back right?
VAT but not the fuel tax I'm guessing?
VAT but not the fuel tax I'm guessing?
I'd assume the duty cant be recovered. But the VAT could be as its a service before the end user.
So to keep hauliers happy they could simply whack up the IC fuels VAT to screw us all over lol
