Is there any law to stop me making my own car trailer?

I have a few idea, and would rather build my own then spend £2k+ on a tidy one.

There is a ifor williams coating place near by too, so I can have it galvanised like theres!

Anyone any experiance, as I could in theory put anything I wanted on it, untill the police could prove it was overloaded etc?

Does it need some form of test?

the axles need to be plated for the correct weight. they need to be legally braked, and the trailer needs to conform to C&U regulations. as you will only have a basic car licence, you get into the whole rules & regs of the towing licence. if you are planning to built a trailer to tow a nova track car, then there is no way it will be below 750kg, so you will be needing a decent sized tow vehicle too

no law,

but if it looks dangerous, i can see you getting pulled, but being steel and a car your going to need B+E

a trailer still has to be basically safe, and a copper can do you for an unsafe trailer...

to be honest mate its not worth the hassle, you can pick up an ifor williams for less than a grand on ebay. just take someone who knows about such things to check it out.

oh yes, get a twin axle if funds allow as they are far more stable

Just look around. I bought a cracking twin axel braked tilt trailer before christmas off ebay for £450 with a tyre rack. The only thing it needed was a tyre and the lights sorting.

You just need to keep an eye out and stuff does come up at a good price.

or you could look at a half decent 'dolly' easy to store and you can pull a landrover with a small-ish car

dolly's aren't all that and have more restrictions than you know, if going by that comment.........

As already said for the hassle thats involved it would cost you about the same just to keep an eye out and buy a decent second hand brian james trailer etc etc. This is what i did after weighing it all up and it was the best move ever.

Only law to worry about before a trailor is making sure you have the capacity to tow on a driving licence of the person doing the towing

You can't beat having proper kit to do the job.

I am lucky in as much I have my own Graham Edwards 3 axle trailer 3.5 T GVW, and can move most things without worrying if it is man enough, any of my cars or a tractor upto @2.5 tonnes behind the Range Rover.

The main trouble with having an a trailer being an Ifor/Brain James/Graham Edwards is looking after it and making sure some Pikey doesn't nick it i.e. having somewhere safe to keep it

Thats the issue, it will be kept either on a drive, or down the local farm!

I dont fancy leaving my £1000 trailor outside lol

It's the one good thing about trailers here in Czech they all have their own reg plates and papers so it's harder to nick them as you need the paper work to go with them.

I am selling my lovely little Brian James Micro Max........perfect size for a Nova, and it will slot into a normal sized garage for safekeeping.
