Thinking of removing the kink in my Ashley exhaust system by fitting a third box. Partly to keep the noise down and partly cos the exhaust doesn't actually fit currently lol

Is there somewhere where I can pick a box to the dimensions I need? And can you get them in mild steel, as I assume I can't weld mild to stainless with my MIG welder?

ID is 2.25" and I reckon it needs to be about 600mm long. Everything I've found in that size so far is in stainless steel.

You can weld mild to stainless. I have.

How come your system doesnt fit???

The shifter kink hits the tunnel.

Stainless steel wire and low CO2 gas and I'll be good to weld up stainless, that sound right?

Oh right, not much good when youve paid for a "XE nova system" is it.

Anyway, turning the middle/front exhaust section not going to help???

I welded mild and stainless exhaust together with normal mig wire and Co2/Argon mix iirc. Just blasted it and hoped for the best, and it came out spot on.... lol

No its ideal but what can ya do. Twisting the centre section doesn't seem to help no, twist it for more clearance and its pointing at the floor.

Scott's system mods are my inspiration, and his sounded nice and quiet when I drove his, was just a bit worried about the mild/stainless combo:

Yeah i had to turn mine, which is why mine points at the floor in the middle slightly.

Yeah the stainless/mild "thing" is fine

Bend the centre pipe of your system? I assume only a few degrees will be needed to stop it hitting the tunnel.

Here you go mild steel centre boxes

http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/jetexcustomexhaustparts.php

Theyre not expensive, my whole 3" system with bends, flexi, axle bend, boxes, straight & tailpie was under £250

Paul it doesn't look like they do 2.25", weird.

Jetex stock just about every single exhaust component you could think of, so I'm sure they will have what you need :thumb:

Jetex tells me they make 2.25" silencers exclusively for Merlin Motorsport. So could go for this:
http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p14734/JETEX-SLIM-ROUND-420MM-x-100MM-DIA-2.25%22/product_info.html

Or there's something like this from Tweeks:
http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Motorsport/Exhausts/Universal_Exhaust_Silencers/Custom_Chrome_Racing_Cherry_Bomb_DIVER_Silencer/1884/6020

Both are a little shorter than my initial measurement so could get a straight length to extend it or put up with a slight kink before/after it.

They expensive then? Looking at their centre boxes, £37 for a large one:

Loads cheaper than all the mild steel ones I've found, £20-30 saving is worth the tenners worth of stainless MIG wire I'll need to fit it.

I fitted one to my mates old GTE and it wre the same, then I got one for my TD and its still the same.. Bit annoying really!

I did however manage to stop it rattling! :)

The one i fitted was from Mij same as you posted up, i got off ebay, fits just right, IIRC my mate used normal wire etc, just need to have the right gas..

When you get the box you will be able to work out where to cut the system pipe, i cut mine just before the shifter kink and then we fitted the system under the car again and held the box under too, this way you work out how much you need to cut/weld from the system either side of the new box to fill the gap correctly (if that makes sense??)

But the mij ones what i used, good luck with it dude, just do lost of trial fitting etc before cutting, and before welding etc.

Heres the rest of the page with the system.

Nice one Scott, yeah I found in your WIP you had used the MIJ one, so might order myself one of those - long enough to completely remove the kink which is a bonus. Plus yours sounded good and quiet at the meet :)
