View Full Version : Nobbys D reg JNB'y C25XE
Well as most of you know ive recently aquired this little beauty  lol
D reg shell with most of the bits inside to put it back together.
The crossmember and battery tray are rotten so i am ordering a new front panel and battery tray and the sills are solid but have the rot disease so will i will be renewing the sills aswell.
Plans are keep it looking factory easrly mk1 just unsure of a colour yet ( chocolate brown, leaf green, nordic blue or maybe the mettalic orangey red ive seen on some early novas), will be stich welded and im going to do the cutout for xe/let but im unsure what engin im going to go for yet. Im planning on removing the seam sealer from under the arches and maybe underneath as i want the shell to last me lol.
So these are the for sale piccys

well today i had another play finished off my n/s sill and then removed the firewall and ground it down to look neat but ive left abit on for the wiper motor as i want to keep the origional setup. Then i started stripping the v6 removed the f25 and attempted to remove the front manifold so i can take it to work and get some heat round it as both of the downpipe bolts have snapped. Need a xe flywheel and then im going to bolt the box and clutch on and then trial fit the engine ooooeeeeeeeee

you do realise petrol evaporates quicker than water so you'll be losing fuel everytime you put some in (evenwhen parked) and then you'll probably moan about fuel consumption lol

surely you ought to have braced the wings before removing the front panel and crossmember then doing all that welding. Bit late now lol but good work anyway :thumb:
no i dont see why? as when you fit the new panel the xmember is not going to shorten or lenghthen so when fitted its going to push the chassis back out anyway if i braced it then fitted the new panel i could had a few mm gap either side off the xmember id be in the ****
havent touched the old girl for a few weeks but have since bought a se of bilstein yellows and some 22 spline shafts will get piccys up soon
Ohhwee cant beat a set of billies for a nova.
Shame i cant afford them
Right the latest -
ive finished removing all the little excess bits of metal from the old front panel, and finished repairing all the little odds and sods that needed sorting, then i hammerited where the crossmeber sits an then fitted the front panel, its 90% done just gotta finish some little bits ive also welded around the front tie rod mounts on the crossmember, ive had to cut the inner wings and weld new lips/ears on and ive not done spot welds with the new panel ive just seam welded it on. Will get it finished Tuesday and then get some seam sealer round and then some primer, then the plan is fit the f20 to the V6 and fit it so i can make the front engine mount and make up a new rear exhaust. Then i will remove the engine and get the bay painted then refit the engine again lol all good fun!! Heres the piccys -

tommorows job is too make a front engine mount so i did a ver very rough idea of whats needed ive gt some 4mm or 5mm chequer plate that will be used for now but might go abit stroger at a later date.
http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/197178_10150433782160431_665680430_17468126_765945 3_n.jpg
heres a few pics of the room i have around the engine bay andof terear exhaust. Once the engine mount is done and all level ill start the manifold, im looking to make it so it can be removed with ideally the steering rack in place but if not ill make it so you can get it off with the engine in situ but with the rack removed its only 7 bolts to remove the rack so aint the end of the world!

Well ok!! Wouldnt want that beast to drop out half way round a twisty!
Keep up with the good build.
Can't you put another hole in the mount, surely it will rip them two bolts out.. btw it looks good other wise :)
I'd be inclined to have another crack at that mount, because;
The ends of the square plates you've put in to strengthen it, will not be adding anything to it at all as there's no lines between the 2 mount plates if that makes sense? Imagine it as a piece of paper, you could just fold most it up on itself with no resistance, until it gets to the point where you've made a slim triangle, this is the only bit adding any strength.
The 2 holes on the chassis leg side are far too close together, I can't remember off hand what the mount is like but are there more holes available in it? If not I'd drop down to one bolt tbh, with an engine steady if needed. At least then it's just going to try and twist around it and not shear them both and fall out.
The furthest out bolt engine side is on a 1 inch square piece of plate with no local reinforcement so the flex across the mount (everything flexes, even 3mm plate!) will mean the nearer bolt is taking the brunt of the engine torque.
So it boils down to, you have a single bolt mount on the engine side, with a thin slither of metal as reinforcement between this and 2 very close together bolts which are taking a huge turning moment amplified by the fact they are only 20mm or so apart. I can fully appreciate it's a home effort and fair play for having a go, but personally I'd have another bash at it and also use plain plate steel as those diamonds in footplate are pressed into the steel, so it's basically pre stressed before you even bolt anything to it, they will also have work hardened and the sharp corners in the shape of them cause the corners around the diamond shapes to take a larger amount of stress, a phenomena referred to as local stress concentrations normally. There is a reason it's called footplate and not "******* strong structural plate for holding buildings up"! lol

yeah dude the mount braces need to be trianguler and strech from the adge of the onr face right to the other face edge, max strenght and support! otherwise good updat again ps reply from mobile lol
TBH Its not the worst mount I've seen on a V6 car lol
Am I the only one who isnt blind and can see 3 bolts, Plus the two "very close bolts" on the engine mount are std Nova distance, Thats no different.
Agreed on beefing it up a bit more at least, but just get up on the engine and jump on it, If it dont move, WIN lol

Agreed on beefing it up a bit more at least, but just get up on the engine and jump on it, If it dont move, WIN lol
I thought exactly the same dude, its up to the job, my V6 corsa had a much worse home made mount on and held up thru all the death i gave it!
Cheers for the reply chaps, I will be having another go at the mount using triangle support like scott parker said and capping the ends off also ill be using 5mm plain steel, the mount is bolted up fine for now so my build can carry on as planned and ill just change the mount before it goes on the road all being well
Ye alex there is 3 bolts as there is in david dixons plus like you said the standard nova chassis mount only has 2 hole but the mount will be polyfilled for now and maybe a solid one we will see

looking fresh dude really wants to take mine and rebuild it again now lol
right another update really peeed off lol
This is going back to last weekend -
decided to cut up a poxy 4 pot manifold to make my rear manifold fit
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/200674_10150436404720431_665680430_17505356_304894 7_n.jpg
then tacked it into place with a nice bit of room around it
http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/196161_10150436421135431_665680430_17505456_651448 7_n.jpg
then dropped engine back out and and pulled gearbox and all other bits and bobs off it for a clean/paint
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/188773_10150438031790431_665680430_17522365_477597 7_n.jpg

and after
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/188948_10150442069890431_665680430_17555857_304711 8_n.jpg
also painted the steering rack
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/200298_10150443834985431_665680430_17575873_554150 5_n.jpg
then painted the engine bay with £10 rattle cans in Mexico Red the origional colour it isnt the best job in the world and could do with a little falt and polish here and there but for what its cost me im happy with it!
http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/200547_10150442137775431_665680430_17556792_186496 4_n.jpg

then today ive fakin ballsd up was grinding the underseal back and the o/s has came up with about 1o little bubbles from the heat of the grinder even though i did i lightly! teach me to do the bay last next time lol so now i have to paint the o/s chassi leg between the strut and the front panel again!!
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/188486_10150443813150431_665680430_17575495_304337 5_n.jpg
so now ive had to falt the o/s bay off and will repaint tommorw night, i have also welded the rear manifold up properly off the engine and painted my springs hammerte red. Next thing is when the bay is done to rebuild engine - manifolds alternator etc etc refit engine and then get it rolling so i can get it out the garage and start putting the loom back in ooooo the joys!!

lol no probs.
another update ive done quite alot even though it doesnt look it lol
i have painted the front bumper and fitted it, found me a well used GSI radiator and lower radpipe on ebay that i bought for £10 ive since found an used a TRACTOR water pipe as the top hose on the v6 is more than a right angle and is a bit of a nightmare! Also bought me a 6 month old GSI petrol tank of Bendoodar off here. Also bought me some 8mm copper fuel pipe and some new 60mm rear springs with height adjusters off egay. Also a new brake light switch. I have also fillered my sills in doesnt look anywhere near brilliant lol but it will do for the summer until i goes in for respray next winter. Also fitted both doors, clucth and throttle cables, wiper motor. I also went into Halfrauds and picked up a fe aux belts to try and find one that fitted as im not running air con or PAS and found 1 part number is HAL975 if anyone needs it lol still go loads to do but next job is fit fuel lines and tank and ten engine loom and see if shes going to run!

cheers nobby, I feel silly for asking but I havn't even looked at the back end on mine lol
You've got 2 rubber pipes just need unclipping and sliding off on the O/S front, worth replacing too as one of mine is leaking atm
Looks great, top work mate
well mine is leaking some where thats why am taking it down. can't seem to see a leak so am guessing its coming from a seam, got a mint tank off craigs old van so that will be painted and fitted this week :)
Check the pipes on the front as it's taken a year and 2 MOT's for me to spot that leak. Looks like it's coming from the tank as it's the tank that's grubby, but it's actually blowing backwards from the rubber hoses.
Oh, cheers mark I will have a look at the time. :)
couple more things arrived today!
height adjustable rear springs and 8mm microbore fuel pipe thats tommorows job sorted!!

whats wrong with them springs ?
Theres threads in club chat about those springs, I have them on my corsa, they sit at 60mm.
another update won the early v6 engine cover on egay for £4.99 local to me so win! http://i.ebayimg.com/00/$(KGrHqEOKooE1z-8RvL)BNw7jcoUhg~~_12.JPG
then today ive started the exhaust downpipes i have had to scrap my origional idea of keeping the origional flanges as there isnt alot of room. So ive decided to just go for a slip over downpipe the Jaguar v6s run a similar setup on the rear manifold and i will just use a normal exhaust clamp to tighten it up as i didnt want to weld it onlike the bodge my last v6 was so i dont have to cut the exhaust off to remove the engine! I have used an xe manifold to make my manifold and downpipe lol

hadnt thought of that pal! advise taken rep given
No worries bud, its probably unlikely the fan would burn out but its not something you really want to risk happening, as you say v6's tend to run hot so you dont want part of your cooling system failing and risking overheating:eek:
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Spudly again.

Well done dude, in the vid is the exhaust fitted? sounds well raspy?
the 1st one is with the exhaust blowing, the second i still need to find a gasket for the front manifold lol
With a standard bumper/grill on there, the V6 shouldn't get hot at all (only when its standing in traffic for long periods). The only reason I had mine on permanent previously was there was no air coming in the front - nowadays I run it without the fan on at all and only flick it on if I stop for a long period.
If its getting hot, check your hoses aren't kinked and water flow is Ok.
Well done nobby top job on that mate really come together quick.

The temp gauge is good mate just under halfway and all my hoses i think are ok lol when i said hot just the general temperature the engine gives off, i will be putting it on a switch when i can locate the wire feeds lol and i cant rep you yet lol i need to spread the love :thumb:
Well done nobby top job on that mate really come together quick.

Got a spare pair of mk1 sill trims in black here if you want them, aslong as i make it to PV you can have em if you want?
In the middle of reading your thread.
I'm impressed with what you've done so far :thumb:. I bet it's gonna give a few people a nasty shock when it's on the road.

. . . and as some of you know the car passed its mot and is now taxed etc, however on the night i went out to the cinema with the wife and on the way home it was dark so put the lights on and 2/3 way home along a bumpy road i hit a pothole and the battery light came on, so i drove home and did a quick check of wires bad earths and noticed that the battery light was getting brighter as i revved it! So checked underneath and found the driveshaft weight had hit the bottom of the alternator and possibly caused it to burn out? (either this or when the lights, heaters etc etc were on for the 1st time the alternator s h i t itself) So got back from work today and the light was still on when i started it up so left it running for a while and i managed to get 17.??v ( cant remember exactly lol ) out of it! Then it dropped right down to 11.92v with or without lights heaters etc on but the lights now gone out so possibly have a regulator fault?. So i have another alternator coming tommorow off an omega v6 iv been told it wil fit as the blocks the same but obviously rwd. Other problems i have is because i have removed the support and cut some of the slam panel off to fit the v6 the slam panel is flimsy and the bonnet will latch down but not sit right so im going for some black bonnet pins of egay and going to put a 1x1 box section in where the slam panel fits, also i have a ticking from the front manifold i changed both the gaskets but the front has a heatshield that i tack welded on as the bolt had snapped so got to remove radiator to get at it!! grrr oh well happy days!
heres the damage to the alternator not really that bad but when you spin it makes a screeching/quiet grinding noise??

good work mate. car looks great. glad the tanks gone to good use. hopefully catch up with you at pv next weekend.
Nice one dude, like i said on facetube at least the niggles are showing up now with plenty of time left to sort them and not the night before, or on the way to pod next week:thumb:

cheers pal yeah tanks fine was abit suspect about the damage lol but i tursted you and its all good, ye ill try and catch you at pod next week did you get the GTE?

ye spud done just under 20miles tonight and all good! :thumb:
UPDATE - As i have just mentioned i fitted a new 2nd hand alternator today and the battery light wasnt coming on so checked the wiring and all was fine so checked the battery bulb in the clocks and the bulb had blown and the bulb holder had melted i suppose thats what nearly 18v does lol So i replaced the bulb and started her up battery light goes straight out and charging at 14.2v on idle and 13.8v at 2k rpm so all good! Alternator was abit tight coming out but the new one i dont think is off a v6 its very similar and fits perfect but is slightly narrower and fitted through the wheel arch chassis bit a treat, i have done nearly 20mile tonight in it and alls good absoulutly loving the noise/grunt of the v6 :D
Glad youve only had minimal teething problems dude and ill be looking forward to seeing this at pod next weekend:thumb:

Yes mate I got the gte. Not a bad car at all it's got 6 months t+t so been getting a bit of use out of it, just wants a bit of tidying up over the winter. Yh I knew the tank would be right mate my dad pushed the jack under it n dented the tank knew it wasn't split or anything though. I'll look forward to seeing it at the pod.
booooooo not impressed front water hose has started to leak so as we speak im trying to figure out how to solve it lol, i have cut my slam panel off and she wil get some nice 1x1 box section for ease, have removed my front manifold and cleaned it up as it was blowing due to abit of the old gasket still on there! Have ordered a new gasket for the front manifold into the downpipe like an O ring thing from Vauxhall, have cut all my bits up for my new front engine mount using 5mm steel ive just got to pop round my mates tommorow to use his 180amp welder as my little 130 wont penetrate enough imo! Also fitted my bonnet pins, so at this moment PVS is off unless i sort out a new top rad house but i will bodge somehting if i have to just for PVS lol

you need to make a pipe from 2 bits and join them!
That mount wont work mate, the top red joint will hit the timing cover as thats where it starts to "v" out over.
David.

yeah mate ive just saw your 3.2 pic of one, oh right looks like more thinking then lol
well she made it too and fro PVS with no issues and went off the clock on a private empty road at 5.30am on the way down to northampton hehe , not going to billing this weekend as im going to pod again and going to see what times i can achive weather depending!
I really wanted to run mine this weekend but I don't think it will be done enough!
well as some of you may of read in my other thread i managed a 14.2 1/4 mile at santa pod last weekend but its made me want to stiffen it up abit with solid engine mounts, polybushes and maybe some coilovers aswell as some new tyres slicks or semi slicks etc, so i picked the up tonight and will be fitted at the weekend i think gona clean em up and a quic lick of paint and fit them the weekend!

comments welcome!
Whats it like now. I have fitted front poly bushes to mine and it seems to have stiffened it up nicely.. I do have some rears to fit as well but haven't got round to it. What is the solid mounts like to?
yea the polybushes do stiffen it up but doesnt help with torque steer lol and the solid mounts again stiffen it up just make its noisey inside as you feel every vibration lol

Poof it's a tiny nova! lol you will find noise/vibration increase, but it's not too bad... Best to rose joint the tie rods, mine are, rj and lowered, makes for less to no dive under braking, and feels so much more solid, but you will get even more noise etc.
