I'm converting my rack to a quick-rack, I've got everything apart at last - but I've come to the bit where I fit the pinion and it's got no bearing on it - looking at removing the one off the old pinion as it's smooth - I don't think it's gonna come off!
Read the Haynes, apparently if you want to replace this bearing you need to buy a new pinion with a bearing already fitted?!
Can anyone tell me:
a) How to remove old bearing and fit it to the new pinion?
b) Where to get a new bearing and again how to fit to new pinion i.e. do I need to find a mate with a press?!

Oh and if anyone knows what's special about "steering rack grease" then please tell me, it looks like plain old lithium type grease to me...

Thanks

Chris

the grease will be a high graphite grease, cos the rack is a lot slower moving than for example, a wheel bearing...

No need to reuse the old bearing, see here for a bearing number: http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showpost.php?p=873715&postcount=932

Fitting it can be done by tapping it down the pinion with an open ended spanner or similar on the inside of the new bearing.

I use normal CV lith-moly grease for rebuilding my rack, the guy at Quaife tech help said this would be fine.

No, you don't need a press, there is a small circlip holding the bearing in place, the bearing is a 6203z, readily available from a bearing shop or cheap off Ebay...

Here is an excellent reference thread for you..

And from my pic above you can see the bearing removed and the small circlip that was holding it on.
