View Full Version : Sender or clocks faulty?

When I bought my car the previous owner told me that the petrol gauge doesn't work. Its got a digi dash.

He said he tested the sender (I'm guessing with a MM) and said it works so the clocks must be faulty.

However, when I filled up the whole tank it went up by 2 bars on the clocks then back down to empty after about 100 miles.

I'm reckon the sender is faulty and its not giving a correct signal.

What do you think?

The senders tend to wear out in the middle, i.e. full tends read full, in the middle (anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4) open circuit, i.e. empty, 1/4 full to empty gauge reads again.

Chances are the sender and digital gauge are incompatable with each other.

I would check the sender with a multi meter across the full range, i.e. take it out of the tank, or measure it several times as the tank is emptied.

And go from there;)

Hmmm... Anyone got a suggestion on how to check which one is at fault?

surely if you take the wires off the sender and touch them together to complete the circuit, would give a full tank reading if the clocks were ok.

so im guessing, if that happens then its the sender thats f**ked
