This is my nova build. I have been meaning to write this for a while now but never got round to it. I have read so many projects on here for motivation and thought it would be good if my build thread had the same effect on someone else.

I have been building this for some time now in my spare time and hope to be finished (if there is such a thing) soon. I have done all the work myself with some help from my brother who is very knowledgeable when it comes to engine management.

It started life as a one litre and was a not too bad a shell at the time. I drove it for 2 years as I needed a car for work. Looking back I would have started with a better shell, but I could not afford a better shell when I started. At least having a rotten nova has taught me how to weld and spray.

The aim of this build is to have a nova how I have always wanted it, with everything working and set up to how I like it. The car will compete in the hill climbs, sprints and the odd track day when it is finished.

This is when I first got it.

Few pictures of the rot and rust I was up against.

As you can see its not the best shell ever. The good thing is that the structural parts were not too bad. The doors bonnet and boot etc were in pretty good nick. All the rust was cut out and new clean metal welded in.

The whole engine bay, front chassis legs and rear chassis legs were stitch welded and group A strengthening plates welded in. This was probably over kill for a 1.6 but I knew it was better done now rather than later.

The rear arches were in a horrible state. The inner lid has completely disintegrated. I had left this job till last because I knew that it’s the bit would really make it look bad if not done right. By this point id like to think I had a fair grip of how to yolk the welder.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image074.jpg

Panel marked up against the arch. These lines were kept straight as possible so that it would be easier to make repair section fit
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image075.jpg

The rot was then cut out, exposing the inner tub.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image076.jpg

The rust was cleaned back until I had some substantial metal to weld to.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image077.jpg

The repair section was cut 12mm or so bigger all the way around. I joggled the repair section all the way around so that it would sit as flush as possible. I wanted to use as little cataloy as possible
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image079.jpg

Once I was happy wit the outer arch I drew round the inside with a marker so I knew where the inner tub ended. I made a template then used another repair section to build up the inner tub. I tacked it on and tried the outer arch on to see if the two lips would touch.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image0016.jpg

When I was happy with the fit I welded the tub up
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image0018.jpg

the outer arch was then fitted then welded on. I did it in stitches until it was welded all the way around, allowing it to cool in between to avoid heat distortion.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image0110.jpg

I drilled holes down the lip of the outer arch as far to the outer edge as I could get away with. This was so I could trim back the arches and still have the plug welded joining the outer arch to the inner tub. The lip was trimmed back later on.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image0111.jpg

Other side arch done using same method.

The floor had rusted along the inside. I had never seen a nova as bad as this here before. It wasn’t so bad to fix. I cut all the way along and ground off the rust. I then bent some sheet metal at 90deg and welded it in. I used a jack to push it up against the floor and welded all the way along from the inside.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0030.jpg

I then made plates up for the cage to bolt in. The cage was second hand so I had to make raised plates so that the cage would fit snug along the roof and square down the door pillars. I used 4” box section and cut it to fit. I welded captive nuts on the back so it could bolt in. I then plated up the ends so it was a solid box.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image060.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image061.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image063.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Image064.jpg

Once all the plates were welded I painted the floor white. Don’t know why white but always thought it looked cool on rally cars when there nice and clean.

I cut out all the rust and welded up the front headlight bowls. I then fitted a new slam panel and valence.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0075.jpg

I built the engine up. I didn’t want to throw money at it until I had it up and running but wanted a good solid base to start with. I changed the usual rebuild parts, rings, seals, gaskets, belts, new oil and water pump and lapped in valves. The head was left pretty standard other than taking the edges off the ports and port matching the manifolds. I lightened and balanced the flywheel and crank. A cam will be chosen once I figure out where the power is and where I want it. Porting can be done once it is running and the teething problems corrected. The plan is to run individual throttle bodies from a motorbike. The manifold was made from old exhaust pipe, bent and welded to an inlet manifold blank.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0021.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0022.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0023.jpg

I had never sprayed a car before this, other than the odd wing or repair. I decided the best way to learn is to do it yourself and the worst that could happen is id need to rub it all down again. I started with the engine bay to get a feel for it. I was quite happy with the result.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSC00038.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSC00039.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0159.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0156.jpg

I Cataloyed the rear arches. This took ages to get right and is not something id like to do again in a hurray.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSC00042.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0185.jpg

I rubbed the car down and made up a make shift spray booth.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0187.jpg

I gave it a coat of primer all over. This was probably over kill but it meant I could get it nice and smooth for the top coat. The Xbox goat a coat and was finished in flame red with the dregs in the tin.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/DSCN0194.jpg

I sprayed the colour on nice and thick so it could be flattened and polished after. I was delighted with the finish and was better than I thought it would turn out.

I then built up the rack and the fitted the brake lines. This was a huge turning point as I was actually starting to put things on the car rather than take bits off.
http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/IMG_0034.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/IMG_0050.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/IMG_0036.jpg
The doors were rubbed down and sprayed up. I had to repair the door lock because it was broken into with a screw driver and had dented around the lock.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/IMG_1043-1.jpg

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/IMG_1021.jpg

The doors have now been built up and the vinyl’s put on. The engine is also in and I am in the middle deciding where all the vacuum pipes and alt bracket will attach to the inlet manifold. The windows are in and the doors on. I still need to fit and spray the wings. I left them till I had the doors on so I can get them to line up right. I have more pictures but I am at work just now so ill put them up soon.

Thanks for the positive comments. It’s nice to have my hard graft appreciated.

I’ve found some more up to date photos in my phone. I have more in my laptop but I won’t get them till I get home.

Door built up with GSi window surround and rubbers.

As I said before all the windows are in now with the GSi window surrounds and door pillar vinyl. It might sound daft putting these bits on for a track slag, but I think the grey bits are the bits that make the novas. They can always get removed when I reach a power limit and looking to shed a few kg's.

Bit of an update.

Done a lot but not really much to show of it. I got an Emerald ecu and made and fitted a loom. spent a lot of time on this and is pretty much ready to go. I mounted the ECU in the glove box and looks pretty sweet.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/IMG_0167.jpg?t=1315951545

I have also fitted the the radiator and finnished off the inlet manifold. I had to make up a pipe that joins the inlet to the heater matrix and also located the water temp sensors.

I dont really have a lot of pics so ill get some more tomorrow.

Had loads of odds and ends to finish off nothing really worthy of an update. I finally have it in a state that I can start it.

Vid of first run. The car is just running on a rough base map with nothing balanced. Only the base timing has been set up. no exhaust.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyFWWXU6264&list=UUMQtB_nq3_7V180iIqZJSqg&index=4&feature=plcp

Second vid with half an exhaust. Poor sound quality due to being a phone vid but you get the idea. The rev limit is set at 5000rpm for now. Fueling still needs setup correctly with the wide band.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ2QPYrBNug&feature=autoplay&list=UUMQtB_nq3_7V180iIqZJSqg&lf=plcp&playnext=1

Not much more to do now. My plan is to get it in a state where it can be MOT'd then get it on the rolling road.

Chuffed :d

Ok so I’ve got it starting and Idling pretty good now and need to get it on the rolling road. I haven’t taken much pics of the recent work and I always forget to take a camera.

I have fitted my innovate LC-1 and got it connected up to the emerald and seems to be doing as it’s supposed to. I had a bit of an issue with my Ashley exhaust as they decided to send me a mk2 exhaust as they no longer supply the mk1 anymore. I got that sent back and ordered a second hand Ashley from the bay that should fit. If not ill make it fit.

The interior is basically all done now and have the seats in and the door cards on. I have prepped the wings and am ready for a spray once I can get in the garage and the weather is warm at the same time.

I haven’t really been pushing the build as I’ve been up at my brothers working on his workshop. Without his workshop finished there is no rush to get the nova driving. I’ll stick some pictures of what we’ve been up to up there.

Ive also finished off all the work in the engine bay for now. Ive fitted conduit to the wiring and you can see my wide band fitted on the firewall. I wanted to get everything pretty much done under the bonnet to save scratching the wings after they've been fitted.

This is the most recent work done to the engine.

your right, i thought the charade was the sr, must be my eyesight with age.

You need to get the SR on the road, do some rust proofing because even in the summer it rains continually in Aberdeen!

Has anyone got pictres of where the grill attaches to the slam panel. there are holes in the bumper but it has square holes in the slam panel. im guessing i need to get the clips that go in square holes like the ones that hold the rear number plate on.

Im also swithering whether to put a yellow bumper strip or red. Idea was originaly yellow as my calipers are yellow.

Thanks for the comments. Im glad the wheels suit it concidering they are not that common on a nova. I also have a set of OZ racing rally wheels in 15" that i want to get powder coated a mistral grey colour. Not sure which ones to put track tyres on though.

The RR is real tidy. It needs calibrated to do power runs but it holds load and RPM great. Plus you can see the hp needle ging up and down with the changes made, which is all we need at the minute.

The wheels are tracked. If thats what you mean? I have not driven it yet at all. Its an f13cr in it. im looking out for a lsd and a shorter final drive. I missed out in one a couple of months back. I can imagine the WR would be too tall. you should try get a box out a corsa sport they are CR but only tiny bit longet 2nd and 3rd. There is heeps around the scrappys.

Spent sat morning with the nova on the dyno. Its almost ready and mapped. We've just got some fine tuning to do and get rid of a couple holes in the map.

It seems to be getting way hot. I think the fan is a bit under powered and having no cowling isnt helping keeping the engine temps down. I decided to fit an oil cooler anyway to help a bit. Im not sure how much it needs it but it will certinly help. Heres a few pics and vids. vids a bit sh!t, doesnt give you any idea how good it sounds.

Was going to say the same as Meritlover, vertically (with in at the bottom) or with the unions on top would ensure the cooler gets filled and does its job?

therealnovaboy

I cant get it vertically cos its too long.

Itll be fine the way it is. As long as its full of oil before i connect up the hoses to the block i cant see an issue.

I thought I’d better update this as I haven’t in a while.

I managed to get an MOT a few weeks back after finding that the braided brake hose had been rubbing on the CV boot.

It’s now on the road and has clocked up a few hundred miles with no major issues. The closed loop tuning has ironed out the fuelling a bit and was getting better every time I jumped in it for the first 100miles or so. I also found that the poly V alt pulley was rubbing on the chassis leg on hard cornering. I swapped it out for a single V alt and pulley and doesn’t seem to touch it any more. The front tie bar polly bush had also melted and was causing a bit of play in the wheel under braking. I turned out a new polyurethane bush for just now and have new polly bushes on order.

I have a few Jobs to do before my first event which is a week away. I’ve got some ACB10 tyres to fit, make a beam breaker, some sort of oil catch tank and sort out a knocking/rattle that’s coming from the driver’s side front wheel.
I don’t have much pics since its MOT but it’s not changed much visually anyway. I have a few running vids which I must admit are a bit poor (I don’t really want to spread the good ones on YouTube ;)). Hopefully I’ll get some proper footage at the hillclimb.

Did you do Fintray this year? Looking good :)

therealnovaboy
27-05-13, 11:30 AM
Yeah I was at fintray hillclimb. It Was a great weekend and the weather was lovely. I was a bit shakey at first but once I got settled in my times got increasingly quicker. I managed a 37.21 which im more than happy with. The other cars in my class were all a higher displacement than me but still managed to beat a 1.9gti which was around the same tuned state as mine. I was about 1 second off an RX8 coming second and about 4 seconds away from my mates 220hp clio who won first place. The fact the car didnt have a limited slip diff was losing me time. Two out of the three bends are tight and it was just spinning up the inside wheel. It was hard to carry speed through the bend and have traction on the way out.

I thought i was going to get chucked off because the marshals were complaining that i was dropping oil at the starting line. it turned out that when i was heating my tyres and brakes up the fuel was surging forward and comming out the tank overflow. I have to run a full tank because i havnt fitted a swirl pot yet. A 6mm bolt up the overflow stopped that.

my times were dead close to the 106gti and the saxo in the class above me so i know im around where iwant to be. once i fit the sccr LSD gearox ill expect to see chunks of time coming off my runs.

heres a few pics.

Been busy on the nova the last few days. I decided to take the engine out as there was a few little jobs I wanted to do. The main one was to make sure that there were no leaks from the crankshaft end seals as I think they were seaping slightly. I also decided to finds true TDC and fit the fast road cam I had In The back of the garage. I also port matched the manifold to the inlet manifold to the head, fitted a new exhaust manifold and painted up the rocker cover and inlet manifold. I also rebuilt and fitted my sccr gearbox and diff.

Gearbox built up.

Your second run is quite an improvement on your 1st, but a renault bet you!!!!

Your getting into it, are you enjoying it? I did think about it with the 1.4 but looked so expensive for so little driving compared to track days.

therealnovaboy
26-06-13, 12:55 PM
the clio on the first day was a clio 200 and he had done this track before a number of times. By the second day my times were faster than his best time which im quite pleased with.

The other Clio (which was 1st in class) was my mates which has had quite a bit of work to it running around 220bhp, close ratio box and LSD. Im not too bothered about him beating me but would be quite possible for the my car to get his times with a better driver/ few mods ect.

I know what yor saying about the price. for the time on track it works out pretty expencive. n the other hand there is nothing else up here. Ill go down to knockhill, but its handy to have events close buy that I can drive there and back within an hour. IMO the more events you do the more you can justify the expense of the car.

I know what yor saying about the price. for the time on track it works out pretty expencive. n the other hand there is nothing else up here. Ill go down to knockhill, but its handy to have events close buy that I can drive there and back within an hour. IMO the more events you do the more you can justify the expense of the car.

Well if you can get close to the 220bhp Clio times with your Nova, that's quite an achievement. I know what you mean about local events but for me they are just out of reach financially. Although track days are cheaper, there is the risk for a valuable car to consider also. Knockhill is only 2 hours away so it's not too bad, it's after doing 60 miles on a track, then driving home in slow motion at 5pm, painfully dull lol.

I had a couple events with vids and results to share.

boyndie results (http://www.admc.org.uk/results.html) Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oeiKcodcwg)
Alford results (http://www.gac.org.uk/results/2013/alf_jul14_event.pdf) video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8CmdkMkbak)

Great weather both days and made out to be both great weekends. I was a bit dissapointed on my times at alford. I think the bigger powered cars could make up more time as its a faster track and I could make up time on the twisty track at boyndie.

I wont make up excuses I as clearly slow.

I decided to fit the fibreglass bonnet I picked up some time back. Fitted some catches and cut some manta 400 vents in the top. I don't like black bonnets and will be going red soon.

Doune, Stirlingshire. Handles ok but seems to want to slide the back end a bit. Could do with a front ARB I think.

I haven't updated In a while. After the last hillclimb at doune I decided to fit a Front anti roll bar. I've never had one on a nova before and wasn't sure if I'd like it. However having fitted it it feels much tighter. It's not that great on bumpy/rough Tarmac but on smooth tar it's definitely better.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Mobile%20Uploads/CE21ACF5-B54C-48FE-8A9B-D40570E2CCAC_zpspmbmxood.jpg

I've also fitted a swirl pot. I could only have a minimum of half a tank so I've managed to save the weight of half a tank of petrol. Which is quite a bit.

http://i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd375/therealnovaboy/Mobile%20Uploads/829CBED8-B8C2-49A6-A095-EA8749600598_zpshp5hrul8.jpg

Ive had a few hilclimbs since including a class win at fintray hillclimb. I've been back to doune too but due to being a leg of the British championship the classes are combined and couldn't get a trophy. That said I'm still chuffed I got a new PB. The car is much less loose.

Pilbeam bottom arms and strut brace?

Looks very nice work there pal, got any pics of your linkage?

Would you be willing to let me borrow the strut brace so i could get it copied for my hillclimb car? been looking for one for a while and no luck, one on ebay a while ago but went for silly money.

Also.... thats the noisiest fuel pump in the world! lol

therealnovaboy
01-07-15, 01:45 PM
Yeah it's noisy.its the shuttle pump to the swirl pot.its right beside the roll cage loop where the cameras mounted. It's not as bad in the car. Needs rubber bobbin mounts but way down on my priority list.

The brace is pill beam and I think the bottom arms at copy's by Harry Hockle but as far as I know the same. I'm not so sure about lending it oh tbh but it's kinda being being used at the minute. I'd be happy to give you dimensions an pictures it's not hard to copy but would be to get the quality. I payed a lot for it but it's sexy and rare so could justify it to myself.

I'll get pics of the linkage. If I remember. I never remember, just move onto the next thing and forget I've done it.
