Hi all,

I have a 1.3 8v with a ast9 kent cam in it, I removed the head the other week to do the head gasket and give it a decoke.

Now ive come to put it back together i have noticed there is no TDC mark on the vernier cam pulley!!

How do i or can i get the cam to TDC???

Thanks

Use the pin on the the pulley end of the cam and align vertically, then get the no.1 piston at TDC and apply the belt ;)

Cheers Boffer8 you are a legend!!

That could have been an expensive mistake!!!

as above or just take no1 spark plug out and put a thin screwdriver etc down the port and set no1 piston at tdc

or turn the crank pulley til the notch is in line with the pointer...far easier and more effective method of finding TDC on piston 1 lol

What kind of use does this 1300 get? Race? Hillclimb?

I tried an AST9 (in a 1300) many years back, never found it of any use - while it produced about 2hp more than the AST8, it was utterly pants low-midrange, making it slower in terms of lap-time. Perhaps if I'd had a 12-speed sequential seamless shift gearbox, I might have been able to make use of it.

It's stunning in a 1600 though. It was the cam of choice for the Nova Challenge rallycross cars - standard head, twin 45's, ENEM solid lifters, and the AST9, they made 175hp day in day out, and were just plain great!

I guess you have the old Kent steel billet adjustable wheel, which did, IIRC have a slim notch for the TDC mark. But once well weathered, often disappeared!

Hi there this engine was in a hillclimb car!! The notch on the vernier cam wheel had disappered so I could get tdc on no1 piston but had no way of knowing if the cam was at tdc if that makes sense!! But with the great help from you guys it's sorted now!!! It's was an engine I was doing for a friend and me being me rushed into stripping it without checking and inspecting it beforehand!!!

Trust me, I'm a doctor, he'd have better times with an AST8.
