View Full Version : Insured Unless SORN - 2011 Law?
Just been reading up on this;
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Motorinsurance/DG_186696
Basically, If your car is MOT'ed and Taxed, it has to be insured, Even if its not on the road.
So that means for my 2nd car, I'll have to have a second policy out on it, Rather than swapping it as and when I want like i was.
I'll be amazed if this works.
If its not on the road, why is it taxed? Just SORN it.
So everytime I want to use my car over the weekend, Like for shows etc, I'm going to have to buy tax online, swap my insurance, and then come monday, change my insurance back and then send the disc back once i get it.

Have you had a price for multi car policy?
Sturge pays exactly the same for his 3 cars on a multi as i do for my 1.
Or go to the post office and get the tax disc instantly...
Does it not cost money to swap the car over? Surprised the insurance co don't charge for that. I'd not want to leave the car laid up uninsured either tbh

Might aswell have both cars insured, if the second car is taxed, mot'd, and fully running, seems silly not to have it insured too. Then you can drive it whenever you want and are covered incase its stolen. My Nova is still in bits, untaxed and on a SORN, and I still have it insured. Surely its costing you money to swap the policy over two cars all the time anyway?
as jack says just sorn it.
or have enough money to insure it.

sorry for the double post.
how does this make sense?
surly they can still jump in any car and drive it?

they are more liable to drive their own car than someone elses though are they not?? and if the other persons car is taxed and insured as per the above new law then theres not really an issue unless they dont have covering to drive other vehicles on their policy
Costs me more to insure it for a year than it does for me to swap it about 10 times.
I've got no need to have it insured for theft, if they want to nick it, they can.
Its going to cause a **** load more bother, I cant even just swap the insurance, as either way I'm going to need to swap it a week in advance, so I'd have no car.
Like my corsa, i wasnt going to have it on the road until mid jan, but now i need it, I just insured it friday night and i could drive it the next day, I didnt plan that, Just thought of doing it friday afternoon.
It was so much easier as it is now, Its not going to change much though is it? People are still going to drive without insurance.
Classic cars (Tax exempt) are going to be affected too, and from the bother my boss had, its going to be a pain for them too.
Pre-73 cars have VED as such, just at nil cost. They still get given a tax disc.
I don't see how it will deter people though, you still see people on police stop death kill each night driving with no insurance or tax. Its not like it makes it easier for the cops either, as they have access to VED and MIB records anyway and can pull up cars without either

alex why swap the insurance. just be happy with one car!
and as jack says the classic boys shouldnt be affected at all.
Classic car owners will have the same thing, They will have to send the disc back to sorn the car?
With the car, I wont want to use it all the time, and nor would you.
i would just continue doing as you have done, doubt you'll ever get pulled up for not having one car insured.
my nova is in the street, uninsured, i have never been insured on it(never driven it) and it will remain like this until i decide to insure it or sell it. my neighbour left a scrap car outside for well over a year and nothing ever happened. wasnt even taxed let alone insured.
