View Full Version : music in workplace licence..
we just got rung up by someone demanding that we have a music licence in our workplace for playing the radio...
we don't have a radio, so told them to go away, but they are very insistent..
has anyone on here been forced to have one???

I remember we were warned (by who?) about having a licence in our workshop..
Think it was if you had 5+ people in range of radio..
We just ignored the 'warning' and it never came to anything..
Just pettiness isn't it?
You sure it wasn't a wind up?
You get a special sticker when you get one.

Nope, seen this come up quite a lot around here. Fines issued too iirc.

Anyways, I believe you need a PRS and/or PPL licence
[edit] But as you have no radio, then ask them wtf they're on about lol

it was something daft like £10k for a licence to cover all the depo's
the loop hole is, play the music out of a car/van ;)

We got letters and demands for this for ages, eventually phoned them up and told them how it was. No customer waiting facilities etc. so no one to listen to radio other than me and the boss. Their answer was, ok then you dont need it, sorry to bother you. Helmets!

but if you open a door, and passer by can hear it, your doomed
What a joke.
Most radio stations have countless adverts to fund them, so they are saying we have to pay to listen to these ads?
Send them some poo in an envelope!
So they say but still its no different to playing loudly from a car, absolute nonense!!!!!!
Radio got turned off at work for this, another sneaky tax

We have to listen to unsigned ****e because someone had the bright idea of saving about 10p per employee a year on paying for radio 1.

I dont get that, does that mean you have to listen to Radio1 or youre lucky enough not to have that shoite forced into your ears?
Tell them it's transmitting through the mercury fillings in your teeth and you have no control over it...lol

we had this problem at ats i think it was if more than 6 people are listening to it you need a licence that was a few years back now though so the laws may have changed!!

Stand in any Wickes store for 2 minutes and you'll understand, tbh I'd rather listen to tiny tantrum or whatever that tools name is.

Yeah, was 5 people back in the early 90s..

they were a little more persistant wile i worked at ats the boss ended up talking the sterio and putting a litte sterio in the staff room that had to be played quiet so customers couldnt hear it!!
Our company got told we needed to have a license to play the radio upstairs in the stock room as the license for the radio downstairs doesn't cover upstairs too. :tard:

we have to have a prs certificate to play music or radio. even if its just cd's :s
so, if you only list to talk radio stations, what is the outcome??

Might be ok as it's a licensing/copyright issue? Although radio/TV stations generally hold a copyright over what they're broadcasting, generally see it if a youtube clip goes up of a recent show.

this is what we was told at work, the whole thing is unenforceable in places like offices and factorier etc as the prs people have no power to entre the premises so you can just say no we dont listen to the radio we listen to five live music now get lost and they cant do a thing
Because our workshop was seperate from our reception we could have a radio and not need a licence in our garage. If they wernt seperate and you could hear the music in the recption then you need a licence if you cant then i understand that you dont

I've seen cafe's & restauants displaying the license stickers in windows, like thats an ethical reason to not use another cafe!
I understand how it is illegal to re-broadcast copyrighted material, but imagine if the UK's unlicensed workforce switched off their radio's. Listening figures (which are so important to the stations) would plummet.

and im sure if this happened then there advertising figures would plummet too!
