there is a law that says you must empty the ballast tanks before entering us waters & refill them with 'local' water so there is no chance of bringing any odd species or disease ashore.. the tanks were part drained & a large wave got it.

In a nutshell, they take on water to stabalise the ship. They then drain this off, but the tanks failed.

and they all got cubed because they'd sat on a hill for a bit! Do they come with no warranty if you have a sloping drive? lol

It was more the fact Mazda were protecting their backsides.

If one had a completely unrelated accident 10 years down the line, you can bet the prosecution would pin it on the manufacturer for selling them on. The cost of a potential lawsuit outweighed the cost of scrapping a handful of cars.

Waiver signed at sale imo, job jobbed.

The reputation of Mazda selling duff cars would stick for years (no comment required about Mobil shares and RX7s pls). Plus, having customers sign a waiver is admittance from Mr M that the cars have faults. Scrapping them all says "Mazda cares about its customers enough that we don't want to risk even a slight chance of quality failure", thus turning negative into positive.

Unfortunately this is the way of the modern world.

off topic slightly but whatever happened to those motorbikes and gearboxes etc that got washed up on the south coast before?? Were folk allowed to keep them??

mowgli
02-12-10, 04:23 PM
oh yes, they disappeared.....

Andy
02-12-10, 04:26 PM
oh yes, they disappeared.....
How do you mean? they were allowed to keep them under the "treasure law" or did they just keep them anyway? lol

mowgli
02-12-10, 04:33 PM
no they weren't allowed to keep them, but nobody actually physically stopped them for the first few hours of beechcombing.

Andy

Yeah because of the treasure laws or whatever they are?
here it is....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Admiralty_law#Salvage_and_treasure_salvage

mowgli
02-12-10, 04:51 PM
under maritime law, as far as i understand it, if someone finds an item on the beech, that is obviously from a known shipwreck, they are duty bound to try to contact the owner of the vessel or their insurers & get a salvage payment. which definitely did not happen in devon...

Andy
02-12-10, 04:55 PM
Yeah, they all left contact details to somebody on the beach iirc

Few mins from my house, odd that it looks closer to portsmouth than scum but there you go.

I think the cars moved and then something wasn't adjusted. As online they have the course settings and route...

mowgli
04-01-15, 02:50 PM
these things have massive stabilizer tanks, and a pump or valve might have failed.

but why did it head west, as it was going to germany???? unless, as suggested, they headed for the bank to stop it sinking

Benn
04-01-15, 03:01 PM
From what the nerds on FB say, it was on route to Germany yes. So it would of been weaving between the sand banks that the solent is full of at low tide.
